Battery Saver is worth making easy to reach if you use it. Do these on the stable release whenever possible; the Open Beta is pre-release software with possible stability, battery and data-loss consequences.
1. Check whether your exact phone can receive Nothing OS 5.0
Nothing describes its Android 17 feature set as part of Nothing OS 5.0. Availability is not simultaneous for every device: the company says release windows are indicative and that region and carrier phasing can change the date. A month shown on the product page is therefore not a guarantee that your handset should already have the update.

Nothing identifies Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 as having reached the end of major software support; those models will not receive Nothing OS 5.0. For any other model, use the live Nothing OS 5.0 device and rollout information rather than assuming that an announcement applies to every Nothing-branded phone.

Install the update from Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then System updates. Nothing’s support instructions use this path; wording can vary slightly by model, locale or build.
- Let the phone check for an available package. If one is offered, read the release details and start the download.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 50% before installation. These are Nothing Support’s preparation recommendations at its software-update guide.
- Allow the restart to finish before judging whether a feature is missing. A staged rollout can make the update appear later on an otherwise eligible device.
If the phone reports that it is current, do not sideload an unrelated package or change region settings simply to force the release. Confirm the model, carrier and current build, then check again when Nothing’s rollout information changes.

2. Get used to the separate Notifications and Quick Settings areas
One of the most visible Nothing OS 5.0 changes is that Notifications and Quick Settings receive separate dedicated spaces. Notifications are for reading and acting on alerts; Quick Settings is for controls such as connectivity, display and power functions. The separation means a gesture that previously exposed both kinds of information may now expose only one area, depending on the panel and software build.
Make the new layout work for you
- Open the notification area and dismiss or act on old alerts so important messages are easy to identify.
- Open Quick Settings and check that the controls you use most often are visible without extra expansion.
- Look for the edit control in Quick Settings and arrange tiles around your routine: connectivity controls for travel, display controls for reading, or Battery Saver for long days.
- Practice opening each panel until the new separation is automatic. Menu gestures and labels can differ by model and build, so follow the on-screen indicators rather than a gesture described for a different Nothing phone.
This is a navigation adjustment, not a requirement to enable every tile. Keep only controls that help you make a quick decision; a crowded panel makes the separation less useful.
3. Review camera, microphone and location access
Nothing says Nothing OS 5.0 updates privacy indicators and permission controls so access to the camera, microphone and location is easier to understand. The first useful action is an audit, not a blanket denial: an app that needs navigation location is different from a game that only asks for it once.

- Open Settings and enter the phone’s Privacy or Permissions area. The exact label can change with the model and locale.
- Review apps listed for Camera, Microphone and Location access.
- For each app, ask whether the permission matches a function you actually use. Remove access that has no reasonable purpose, or select a less expansive option when the phone offers one.
- Use the new privacy indicators as a prompt to investigate unexpected access. If an indicator appears while you are not using a feature that needs it, check the responsible app before granting anything again.
Do not assume that every permission should be denied or that Nothing OS 5.0 applies one default to all apps. Your choices should reflect the app’s job, how often you use it and whether you are comfortable sharing that data.

4. Hide sensitive notification previews on the lock screen
A phone left on a desk, kitchen counter or shared workspace can reveal message text even when it is locked. Nothing Support documents the privacy control at Settings > Lock screen > Privacy.
Turn off detailed previews
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen, then Privacy.
- Choose the option that hides sensitive notification content or otherwise limits lock-screen previews. The wording can differ between Nothing OS versions.
- Lock the phone and send yourself a test notification. Confirm that the lock screen shows the level of detail you intended.
Use the least revealing setting if other people can routinely see the display. If you need to identify urgent alerts at a glance, choose a mode that shows that an alert exists while concealing its message body, then verify the result with a real notification.
5. Confirm Find My Device and make a fresh backup
A major software update is a good moment to verify recovery options, especially before experimenting with beta software. Nothing’s support guidance places device-finding controls at Settings > Google > Find My Device.

- Open Settings > Google > Find My Device.
- Make sure the service is enabled and that the phone is signed in to the Google account you expect to use for recovery.
- Review the account and device name so you will recognize this handset if you need to locate or secure it.
Run an immediate Google backup
- Open Settings > Google > Backup.
- Tap Back up now to start an immediate backup, as described in Nothing Support’s How-To guidance.
- Keep the phone connected until the operation completes, then check the most recent backup time before installing a beta or beginning any rollback procedure.
A backup is a safeguard, not a guarantee that every app’s private data or every local file will be restored. Copy irreplaceable photos, recordings or documents through the method you normally trust in addition to the phone’s account backup.

6. Put Battery Saver where you can reach it
Battery Saver is optional: leave it alone if you rarely need it, but make it prominent if you regularly finish a day with little charge. Nothing Support’s documented method is to edit the expanded Quick Settings panel.
- Open Quick Settings and expand it fully.
- Tap the Edit control.
- Find Battery Saver among the hidden tiles.
- Drag the tile into the visible area and save the arrangement.
- Return to Quick Settings and tap the tile when you want to reduce background activity and other power use.
Because Battery Saver changes how background work is handled, treat it as a deliberate mode for low-charge situations rather than a mandatory first-day setting.

Nothing’s feature list also names Quick Share, improved screen recording, an expanded Dark Theme, independent Assistant volume and a redesigned Recents screen. These are useful to test after privacy and recovery settings are in place.

Try sharing a small file with a device you control and confirm that the recipient and visibility choices are what you expect. Availability and exact controls can depend on the participating devices and account state.

Screen recording
Open the screen-recording control from Quick Settings and inspect its prompts before recording. Check whether audio or touch indicators are enabled for the type of tutorial or troubleshooting clip you intend to make.
Expanded Dark Theme
Enable Dark Theme only if it suits your apps and lighting. Some third-party apps may still use their own theme controls, so a system-wide choice does not guarantee identical colors everywhere.
Independent Assistant volume
When you use the Assistant, adjust its volume separately from media if the new control is exposed on your build. Test it with a short request so spoken responses are audible without making music or video unnecessarily loud.

Redesigned Recents
Open Recents after the update and identify the controls you use for switching, dismissing or returning to an earlier app. A visual redesign changes where those actions appear, but it does not require you to alter app permissions or battery policy.
Should you install the Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta?
Choose the stable release unless early access is more valuable to you than predictable operation. Nothing labels the Open Beta as pre-release software and warns that it can affect stability, battery life and performance. It also warns that installing or rolling back may require a factory reset, and rollback erases all data.

Requirements before enrolling
Nothing says beta enrollment depends on both the listed stable build and availability for your model. Install the latest required stable build first, use the current Nothing Beta Hub version (Nothing identifies it as Beta Hub V2.0 in its instructions), and read the live model-specific requirements on the official Nothing OS 5.0 page.
- Confirm that your model appears as eligible and that your installed build matches the required stable build.
- Back up important data and separately preserve files you cannot replace.
- Read the enrollment and rollback warnings before accepting the beta.
- Install only when you can tolerate troubleshooting, reduced battery life or a reset.
If your reason for joining is one particular feature, check whether that feature is actually listed for the beta. Joining does not guarantee that every item in the general-release announcement will be present on day one.

A sensible order for the first hour
For most eligible owners, the shortest safe sequence is: update on Wi-Fi with at least 50% charge; arrange the separated Notifications and Quick Settings panels; audit camera, microphone and location access; set lock-screen preview privacy; verify Find My Device; run an immediate backup; then expose Battery Saver if you need it. Explore Quick Share, recording, Dark Theme, Assistant volume and Recents after those protections are settled.
Recheck the official rollout page if the update is absent, because Nothing’s dates are indicative and deployment is phased by device, region and carrier. If your phone is Phone (1), Phone (2) or CMF Phone 1, the documented end of major software support means Nothing OS 5.0 is not coming to that model.
