It keeps WireGuard’s cryptographic foundation while changing packet characteristics to make DPI recognition harder. Choose plain WireGuard when the network permits it and you want the simplest, efficient configuration. Choose OpenVPN when TCP/UDP transport and deeper configuration controls matter more than minimum overhead.
Those recommendations come from Amnezia’s own documentation, not an independent speed or censorship study. No protocol is guaranteed to work on every network, and your actual throughput, latency and reliability depend on the server, device, distance and network policy.

The practical choice in one view
| Protocol | Choose it when | What Amnezia documents | Transport and setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| AmneziaWG | A restrictive network detects or blocks conventional VPN traffic. | High performance, low power use and resistance to DPI recognition through traffic obfuscation. This is not a guarantee of invisibility. | UDP; few settings, with masking parameters available in AmneziaVPN. |
| WireGuard | The network allows it and you want a simple, low-overhead default. | Amnezia describes lower mobile power use, lower latency and higher throughput than OpenVPN, while warning that WireGuard is readily recognizable by DPI. | UDP; minimal settings. |
| OpenVPN | You need transport choices, extensive settings or an OpenVPN-compatible workflow. | Time-tested and highly configurable, but recognizable by DPI and described as having normal mobile power use. | TCP or UDP; subnet, port, cipher, hash, TLS-auth and DNS-leak-prevention controls are exposed in Amnezia. |

What each protocol actually changes
AmneziaWG: WireGuard with a masking layer
Amnezia describes AmneziaWG as a fork of WireGuard-Go. Its version 3.1 documentation identifies the same core cryptographic building blocks: Noise_IK, Curve25519 and AEAD ChaCha20-Poly1305. AmneziaWG therefore should not be described as a wholly different encryption scheme. Its differentiator is the way traffic is presented on the network.

The masking mechanisms alter observable transport characteristics, including packet headers, packet sizes, timing and traffic patterns. The purpose is to make deep-packet inspection less likely to classify the connection as ordinary WireGuard. Encryption still protects the contents; obfuscation changes what a censor can infer from the outside.
Amnezia’s version history records progressively broader variation: version 1.5 added transport-layer obfuscation and the ability to imitate common UDP protocols; version 2.0 added dynamic headers and more packet variation; version 3.1 added variation in connection behavior, sizes, sequences and timing. These details can change, so verify that the client and server support the same configuration before changing low-level parameters. The technical description is in AmneziaWG documentation.
WireGuard: the minimal-overhead baseline
WireGuard uses UDP and intentionally exposes relatively few knobs. That simplicity reduces configuration errors and makes profiles easy to move between supported clients. Amnezia presents it as efficient for mobile devices and says it generally offers lower latency and higher throughput than OpenVPN.
The trade-off is visibility. Amnezia’s overview says unmasked WireGuard can be recognized by DPI and may be blocked. A connection that is fast and reliable on a home broadband network can therefore fail when the same device moves to a censored workplace, hotel or national network.
OpenVPN: more transport and policy controls
OpenVPN can run over TCP or UDP. In Amnezia’s configuration flow, you can select the subnet, network protocol, port, cipher, hashing algorithm and TLS-auth behavior, and enable blocking of DNS requests outside the VPN. Those controls are useful when a particular firewall, client or existing OpenVPN workflow dictates a specific combination.

More options also mean more opportunities for mismatched settings. OpenVPN remains recognizable by DPI according to Amnezia, so its flexibility should not be confused with built-in censorship resistance.
Choosing by network conditions
When conventional VPN traffic is blocked
Start with AmneziaWG. Amnezia specifically recommends it for highly censored environments where a VPS address or ordinary VPN protocol may be identified and blocked. Configure it on your server and client, then test from the network that causes the problem. A profile that works at home is not evidence that the same endpoint will work behind a different censor.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This recommendation is a vendor use-case recommendation, not a universal circumvention promise. Blocking systems change, IP addresses can be deny-listed, and a network can restrict UDP altogether. If AmneziaWG fails, investigate the server address, profile compatibility and whether the network allows the required UDP traffic before assuming the protocol itself is unusable.
When the network is permissive
Use WireGuard as the straightforward starting point. Its minimal settings make deployment and troubleshooting easier, and Amnezia describes it as efficient. If the connection is stable and the network does not classify or throttle it, there is little reason to add masking complexity.
When you need TCP or detailed tuning
Use OpenVPN when a TCP tunnel is necessary, an existing OpenVPN client must be supported, or you need the protocol’s explicit cipher, hash, TLS-auth, port and DNS controls. TCP can be useful where UDP is filtered, but it is not automatically faster; the useful choice depends on the network path and the server configuration.

Speed, latency and battery: what can and cannot be concluded
Amnezia describes WireGuard as having lower latency and higher throughput than OpenVPN and describes AmneziaWG as retaining WireGuard’s performance traits while adding obfuscation. Those are product descriptions, not independent measurements. The available documentation supplies no cross-device benchmark, universal megabit-per-second figure or controlled test proving that one protocol always wins.
Test the profile you will actually use. Run the same download, upload and latency checks through each working protocol from the same location and server, at similar times. Record whether the tunnel connects, whether DNS requests stay inside it, and whether long transfers remain stable. A theoretically faster protocol that is blocked or repeatedly reconnects is the worse practical choice.
How to configure the protocol in AmneziaVPN
- Confirm the server and client. Install the current Amnezia client and ensure your server supports the protocol you intend to select. Protocol availability can vary by server configuration and app version.
- Open the protocol configuration flow. Amnezia’s installation instructions expose separate setup paths for AmneziaWG, WireGuard and OpenVPN. Select the protocol rather than assuming the default profile is optimal for your network.
- Choose the minimum settings first. For WireGuard, keep the default minimal profile. For AmneziaWG, leave Magic headers and junk-packet sizes at the server-provided values until you understand which values must match.
- Set OpenVPN deliberately. If using OpenVPN, choose TCP or UDP, then verify subnet, port, cipher, hash and TLS-auth values against the server profile. Enable the option that blocks DNS requests outside the VPN when you require DNS-leak prevention.
- Connect from the problem network. Test at the location where blocking occurs, not only on a trusted home connection. Check that websites load, the tunnel remains connected and DNS queries are not escaping.
- Change one variable at a time. If a connection fails, revert the last setting before changing another. Obfuscation parameters and cryptographic options must match the peer configuration.
The exact controls and labels are documented in Amnezia’s protocol installation instructions.
Profiles, exports and alternative clients
Amnezia supports native app workflows and protocol-specific exports. The alternative-client documentation covers AmneziaWG clients as well as official WireGuard and OpenVPN applications. Its supported-format page identifies .ovpn as the native OpenVPN format and .conf as the native WireGuard format.
Import the format into an app that supports that protocol and check the configuration version first. An AmneziaWG profile is not interchangeable with a plain WireGuard profile merely because both use WireGuard’s cryptographic foundation; the client must understand AmneziaWG’s additional transport behavior.

If a protocol is missing from the selector, Amnezia says the profile may be connect-only and restricted to the choices supplied by its owner. Request a profile that includes the desired protocols, or deploy your own server. See changing protocol instructions and the alternative-app guide.
Router and OpenWrt considerations
Router support is not automatic. Amnezia publishes an OpenWrt installation path for AmneziaWG 3.1, but directs readers to verify the supported build list and exact router model. Firmware version, CPU architecture, available storage and package support can determine whether the setup works.
Before flashing or installing packages, identify the router’s model and firmware, back up its configuration and confirm that the documented build supports AmneziaWG. Do not infer support for every OpenWrt device from the existence of the guide. The relevant instructions are at Amnezia’s OpenWrt AmneziaWG guide.

The protocol is absent
Check whether the server profile is connect-only and whether the installed app version supports the protocol. Obtain a profile with the required protocol enabled or use a server you control.

WireGuard connects at home but not elsewhere
That pattern is consistent with DPI recognition or UDP filtering. Try AmneziaWG, confirm the server’s masking parameters and test again on the restrictive network. A failed attempt does not prove that every AmneziaWG configuration will fail, but repeated failure may indicate that the network blocks the endpoint or the required transport.

AmneziaWG fails after settings were edited
Restore the server-generated Magic headers and junk-packet values, then reconnect. Client and server values must correspond; random changes can make a valid profile unusable.
OpenVPN will not establish a tunnel
Recheck TCP versus UDP, port, subnet, cipher, hash and TLS-auth values against the profile. Confirm that the selected client accepts the imported .ovpn file and that DNS-leak prevention is enabled separately if required.
The tunnel works but performance is poor
Compare protocols from the same server and location, then inspect latency, packet loss and reconnects rather than relying on a general speed claim. Server distance, congestion and the access network can dominate protocol overhead.

A decision checklist
- Choose AmneziaWG when DPI detection or blocking is the primary problem.
- Choose WireGuard when the network permits it and simplicity, low overhead and mobile efficiency are priorities.
- Choose OpenVPN when TCP/UDP selection, detailed cryptographic settings or OpenVPN-client compatibility is essential.
- Verify that your profile, app, server and (for routers) firmware all support the same protocol version.
- Treat speed and censorship resistance as connection-specific outcomes, not guaranteed universal properties.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AmneziaWG a new encryption algorithm?
No. Amnezia describes it as a WireGuard-Go fork that retains Noise_IK, Curve25519 and AEAD ChaCha20-Poly1305. Its changes target observable traffic characteristics such as headers, sizes, timing and patterns.
Is AmneziaWG always faster than WireGuard?
The documentation does not establish that. Amnezia presents AmneziaWG as retaining WireGuard’s performance traits, but no independent benchmark in the available material proves a universal speed winner. Test both on your server and network.
Can any of these protocols guarantee access on a censored network?
No. Amnezia recommends AmneziaWG for highly censored use cases, but its documentation does not guarantee that every network, server IP or configuration will bypass blocking.
