Many AM5 motherboards can support the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but AM5 socket or chipset compatibility alone does not tell you whether a particular board will boot the processor with its current firmware. Check the CPU support page for the exact motherboard model—and hardware revision, if applicable—for the minimum BIOS version. If the installed BIOS is older, update it using the procedure documented for that board.
How to verify 9800X3D support for your AM5 motherboard
Use the motherboard maker’s CPU support list as the deciding reference. Find the full model name and, where the manufacturer distinguishes them, the board’s hardware revision. Then confirm that the support list names “Ryzen 7 9800X3D” and note the BIOS version shown for that specific entry.

- Identify the exact board. Read the full model name on the board or its product listing. Include any revision number or suffix.
- Open the manufacturer’s product support page. Go to its CPU support or compatibility section for that exact model and revision.
- Find the Ryzen 7 9800X3D entry. Record the minimum BIOS version exactly as the manufacturer lists it.
- Compare it with the installed BIOS. If the installed version is older, update before expecting the system to work with the processor.
- Check the update instructions and release notes. Follow the board manual’s method and the manufacturer’s current stable-firmware guidance.
AMD says, “A BIOS update may be needed when a motherboard does not already support a newer AMD Ryzen™ desktop processor,” and directs users to the motherboard brand’s support website for the required version. AMD’s BIOS update FAQ explains the general process; the motherboard maker’s exact-model listing supplies the model-specific answer. BIOS requirements vary by motherboard, even within the same chipset family. These examples from the surfaced ASRock X870 support listing show why there is no single BIOS version for every AM5 board. They are not a complete catalog, and online support entries can change; check the current listing for the exact model before buying or updating.

These values are examples from ASRock’s AM5 CPU support list, not a recommendation to install a particular BIOS without checking the board page and its update guidance.
For another model-specific example, ASUS lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on the TUF GAMING X870E-PLUS WIFI7 CPU support page with validation since BIOS “all.” That listing applies to that named board only; it does not establish the requirement for other ASUS motherboards.

What if your board is B650 or another older AM5 model?
Do not decide from the chipset name alone. The available examples establish that manufacturers publish CPU and BIOS data by exact motherboard model, and that BIOS support can differ even among related boards. For a B650 motherboard—or any other AM5 board—open the support page for the exact model and revision and look for the 9800X3D entry. A nearby model’s listing is not a substitute.

Updating BIOS before installing the processor
A new motherboard is not guaranteed to ship with the BIOS version your CPU needs. Before purchase or installation, find the board’s documented update procedure and determine whether it can be used when the system does not yet recognize the processor. The feature name and steps vary by model, so consult the manual rather than assuming CPU-less updating is available.
- If you already have a compatible CPU that can boot the board, follow the manufacturer’s normal BIOS update instructions.
- If the update must happen before the 9800X3D is installed, confirm the board supports an appropriate update method without a recognized CPU and follow that board’s manual precisely.
- If you do not have a usable update method, ask the seller or system builder whether the board can be updated before delivery, or choose a board with a documented method that suits your situation.
For a removable-media procedure, use a USB drive only if the selected board’s instructions call for one. The drive itself does not make CPU-less updating possible; that depends on the motherboard’s supported feature.

Once you have confirmed processor support, compare the details that affect your build. Compatibility listings do not establish that one board is more reliable or better-performing than another.
