There is no single best AI tool for writing a research paper in 2026. Bibby AI and Overleaf put AI inside a LaTeX editing workflow, Anara puts your source library at the center, and Underleaf is built around turning notes and existing documents into LaTeX while also helping with writing and citations. The right choice depends on the bottleneck you need to remove—not on unverified claims that one service produces better papers or saves a fixed amount of time.

This comparison uses the features, limits and prices each provider publicly describes. No independent head-to-head accuracy or speed test has established a winner, so treat generated text as a draft and verify every claim, citation, equation and reference against the underlying literature.

The four products solve different problems

“AI writing assistant” is an umbrella term here. The services differ mainly in where your work lives and what happens before the assistant generates text.

How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing (2018 New Edition)
  • Author & Edition: Written by Paul J. Silvia; this is the second edition (2018) of the popular guidebook.
  • Purpose: Offers practical strategies to help academics overcome barriers to writing and increase productivity.
  • Audience: Targeted at students, professors, researchers, and other academics across disciplines.
  • Content Highlights: Addresses common excuses, bad writing habits, and provides methods to write, submit, and revise journal articles, books, and proposals.
  • New Features in 2nd Edition: Updated tips for academic writing and a new chapter on writing grant and fellowship proposals.

Choose by your actual bottleneck

  • Your problem is finding support for a claim: Start with Anara’s document-library workflow. Its help material says answers link to passages in your own documents, giving you a place to inspect the evidence before using the wording in a manuscript.
  • Your problem is turning scattered material into LaTeX: Underleaf foregrounds conversion from scans, images, PDFs, Word documents, equations, tables and spreadsheets.
  • Your problem is drafting, revising or debugging LaTeX: Bibby AI offers editor-native chat, citation search, review and LaTeX error assistance.
  • Your coauthors already use Overleaf: Overleaf’s AI functions are integrated into that existing editor, including contextual editing and TeX help. Switching tools may create more friction than it removes.
  • You need a measured accuracy or speed winner: None is established by an independent, year-dated comparison in the available evidence. Do not treat vendor benchmarks, user counts or “faster” wording as a controlled result.

Anara: source-grounded work from a research library

How the workflow works

Anara describes a workspace for reading, annotating, organizing and writing from a library of documents. Its writing guide says you can ask questions, request a draft section or ask the assistant to explain material in that library. The important distinction is that the source collection is the starting point rather than an afterthought.

  1. Collect the papers, reports or other documents you are permitted to use and place them in your Anara library.
  2. Ask a focused question, such as what evidence supports a particular mechanism or how two studies differ in population and method.
  3. Open the linked passages behind the answer. Check that the passage actually supports the statement, including its qualifiers and limitations.
  4. Ask for a draft section only after you have identified the relevant evidence. Specify the population, date range, terminology and citation style you need.
  5. Move the verified prose and references into your manuscript editor, then check the original documents again during final editing.

The linked-passage behavior is described in Anara’s help center, not independently audited: Using AI to help you write. A link is a useful audit trail, but it does not prove that a generated synthesis is complete or that the cited passage supports every clause.

Plan choices and disclosed integrations

Anara’s current plan material lists daily included usage for Free and weekly usage on paid plans. Plus adds connections to science databases including PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov. Pro adds broader model selection, OCR and cloud-productivity connections. Max plans add higher usage and Deep Search. Enterprise pricing is custom.

Where Anara needs caution

A source-grounded answer can still omit a contradictory study, misread a table or combine findings that should remain separate. Inspect the linked passages, read the methods and results in the original paper, and preserve uncertainty when the authors do. Anara is therefore most useful as a navigation and synthesis layer, not as an automatic reference checker or a substitute for subject expertise.

Underleaf: convert existing material into LaTeX

Its distinctive job

Underleaf’s product page foregrounds conversion. It says the service can handle handwritten notes, photographs, PDFs, Word documents, equations, tables and spreadsheets, then produce LaTeX. It also lists writing assistance, citation lookup and a Chrome extension. This makes it a natural first step when your content exists in formats that are awkward to edit or submit as a structured LaTeX project.

  1. Prepare the clearest source you have: a high-resolution scan or photo, a clean PDF or an editable document will usually give the converter more information than a blurred image.
  2. Submit a small representative section first, especially one containing equations, nested tables or unusual notation.
  3. Compare the generated LaTeX with the original page. Check symbols, subscripts, superscripts, minus signs, decimal points, table headings and line breaks.
  4. Correct the source or the LaTeX before converting the rest. A single recognition error in a variable or unit can change the meaning of a result.
  5. Use the writing and citation functions after the structure is sound, then compile and inspect the rendered PDF.

Plans and conversion allowances

Plan Vendor-listed price Credits or conversion limits disclosed
Free No subscription price stated 10 free credits per month
Essentials $6 per month on annual billing Credits and page-conversion allowance differ from Free; exact figures should be checked on the plan page
Pro $12 per month on annual billing Higher credits and page-conversion allowance than the lower tier; exact figures should be checked on the plan page

These figures are listed by Underleaf at underleaf.ai. Annual-billing prices are not the same as a month-to-month rate, and allowances can be revised, so confirm the current terms before subscribing.

Interpreting Underleaf’s accuracy and usage claims

The product page claims more than 50,000 academic users, 240,000 pages converted and 98%+ math accuracy. Those are vendor-reported figures; the available material does not provide an independent audit, a clear measurement method or a publication year. They should not be read as a guaranteed result for your scans. Underleaf also says submitted content is transferred over encrypted connections and is not stored permanently. That is a vendor statement, not an independent security certification. For unpublished data, check your institution’s rules and the service’s current privacy and retention terms before uploading anything.

Bibby AI: an editor-native assistant for LaTeX papers

Features it emphasizes

Bibby AI describes itself as a research-focused AI LaTeX editor. Its feature list includes Bibby Chat, smart citation search, table and equation generation, paper review, abstract and literature-review support, research assistance and LaTeX error detection. The common thread is that drafting, formatting and troubleshooting happen in the same manuscript environment.

A practical Bibby workflow is to outline the section yourself, ask for a narrowly scoped draft or revision, then inspect the citations and compile the document. Use table and equation generation as a starting point rather than accepting output blindly: verify units, labels, alignment, delimiters and the notation used elsewhere in the paper. LaTeX error detection can explain a compiler message, but the proposed fix may alter formatting or semantics, so review the diff and recompile.

Free and Pro pricing

Plan Vendor-listed price or allowance What is established
Free No price stated in the cited summary A small project, compile allowance and AI-completion allowance
Pro $16 per month displayed on the pricing page Paid access is described; exact current limits and billing terms should be confirmed

The figures come from Bibby AI’s pricing page. The page also displays a crossed-out price and billing details that may change, so treat $16 as the displayed amount rather than a permanent guarantee. Bibby’s feature descriptions are at its AI features page.

What the evidence does not show

Bibby’s pages contain marketing language and researcher-use figures, but no independent test here establishes superior citation accuracy, writing quality or speed. In particular, a “10x faster” style claim would be a vendor assertion, not a measured conclusion. Test the editor with a representative section of your own paper before committing a full project.

Overleaf: AI inside an established LaTeX editor

Available AI functions

Overleaf lists LaTeX table and equation generation, TeXGPT help for code and writing, LaTeX error assistance, research-tailored language feedback, paraphrasing and contextual editing. Its positioning is integration: authors can request help while working in the editor rather than exporting the manuscript to a separate assistant.

Overleaf describes the boundary clearly: “It won’t write your paper for you, but TeXGPT can help you create it faster.” That sentence is product positioning from Overleaf’s AI features page, not a measured speed result. Use the functions to explain an error, propose a table structure or improve clarity, then inspect the source and rendered output yourself.

Pricing and collaboration limits are not established here

The cited AI page says an Overleaf plan increases AI allowance and provides access to premium features, but it does not establish current prices, exact AI limits or the differences between collaboration tiers. Because those details are unresolved, a direct price ranking against Bibby AI, Anara or Underleaf would be misleading. Check the current Overleaf pricing and plan documentation before making a purchase decision.

Plans, costs and evidence at a glance

Service Lowest disclosed paid price Usage or allowance disclosed Independent quality evidence
Bibby AI $16/month displayed for Pro Free plan has a small project, compile and AI-completion allowance; exact quantities not stated None established
Anara $10/month for Plus, or $8/month equivalent billed yearly Daily Free usage; weekly usage on paid plans; higher usage on Max tiers None established
Underleaf $6/month on annual billing for Essentials 10 free credits monthly; paid tiers add credits and page-conversion capacity Vendor reports 98%+ math accuracy, but no independent method or audit is established
Overleaf Not stated in the cited AI material Plan increases AI allowance; exact limits not stated None established

All prices are volatile vendor listings, and annual-equivalent figures require an annual commitment. Compare the allowance that matters to your workload—documents, pages, credits, compilations, AI completions or collaborators—rather than comparing monthly numbers alone.

A dependable workflow for using any of them

1. Define the evidence boundary

Separate claims that must be supported by a cited source from connective prose, explanations and transitions. Give the assistant the relevant documents or passages, and do not ask it to invent missing evidence.

2. Generate small, reviewable units

Request one paragraph, table, equation block or subsection at a time. Smaller outputs make it easier to compare wording with the source, identify omitted qualifiers and undo an incorrect change.

3. Verify citations and quotations

Open each cited paper and confirm author, year, title, page or section, DOI where applicable, and the exact proposition being supported. A citation-shaped output is not proof that the reference exists or says what the sentence claims.

4. Compile and inspect the rendered manuscript

For LaTeX tools, compile after structural changes. Check equation numbering, cross-references, bibliography output, table width, figure placement, special characters and warnings. A document that compiles can still contain a wrong symbol or an omitted reference.

5. Keep an authorship and disclosure record

Save prompts, drafts and substantial AI-assisted edits when your department, journal or funder requires disclosure. Follow the target venue’s rules for permitted assistance, data handling and attribution; those rules take precedence over a tool’s marketing description.

Privacy, retention and institutional review

Do not upload confidential peer-review material, restricted datasets, unpublished results or personally identifiable participant information until you have checked the service’s current terms and your institution’s policy. Bibby says research is not used to train models, while Underleaf says submitted content is not stored permanently. Both are provider statements, not substitutes for a legal, security or institutional review. Anara’s connectors and OCR options may also affect what data leaves your approved environment. Minimize uploads, remove identifiers where possible and retain a local copy of the original files.

What an honest comparison can—and cannot—conclude

  • There is no independently validated winner for factual accuracy, citation quality, adoption or time saved across these four services.
  • Anara has the clearest source-library and passage-linking emphasis.
  • Underleaf has the clearest conversion emphasis for notes, images and office documents entering LaTeX.
  • Bibby AI and Overleaf both focus AI inside a LaTeX editing context, with different product ecosystems and feature sets.
  • Vendor user counts, conversion totals, accuracy percentages and speed claims need methods and independent review before they can be treated as objective benchmarks.
  • Prices, limits, model availability, integrations and collaboration terms can change; verify them on the linked provider pages when you are ready to subscribe.

Bottom line

Choose Anara when your central task is understanding and synthesizing a controlled library of sources. Choose Underleaf when the hard part is converting existing notes or documents into LaTeX. Choose Bibby AI when you want an AI-oriented LaTeX editor for drafting, citations and error help. Choose Overleaf when your manuscript and coauthors already live in Overleaf and integrated AI assistance is more valuable than changing platforms. Whichever route you take, keep the author in charge of source verification, mathematical correctness, citation integrity and the final scientific argument.
