They do not work the same way: Gemini starts with the current tab and lets you explicitly share up to 10 tabs on desktop; Claude reads the tab displayed in its side panel and can compare pages across tabs; ChatGPT receives tab context through its browser extension or desktop side-chat workflows, with no published fixed tab-count limit.
Tab access is permissioned rather than magical. An extension may use your existing browser profile and signed-in sessions, Gemini may reach more of a shared Google Workspace document through your account, and browser agents can encounter hostile instructions embedded in pages. Choose the assistant according to the number of tabs, the amount of automation and the sensitivity of the pages involved.

At a glance: which assistant fits which tab task?
| Assistant | Tab scope | How sharing starts | Published tab limit | Actions | Important account or privacy detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT with its browser extension | An open tab brought into a ChatGPT desktop or side chat | Install the supported extension, grant permissions and ask for the tab context | Not stated by OpenAI | Can act on sites when confirmations, allowlists and blocklists permit | Uses the existing Chrome profile, including pages where you are already signed in; its built-in desktop browser has separate browser state |
| Gemini in Chrome | Current Chrome tab by default; additional tabs can be selected | Opt in, then add or remove tabs in the Gemini interface | Up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows on desktop | Tab-reading and sharing are documented; no equivalent tab-action capability is established here | A shared Workspace page can expose more of the underlying document through your Workspace account |
| Claude in Chrome | The tab shown in the side panel, with cross-tab comparison | Install the Chrome extension, grant permissions and enable the connector when required | Not stated | Can click, type, navigate and fill forms | The side panel reads the active tab without extra setup; existing logins can be used |
The fixed number matters only for Gemini. For ChatGPT and Claude, the official material describes how context is selected but does not promise a maximum, so do not design a workflow that depends on an undocumented count.

How ChatGPT gets an open tab into a conversation
What it can see
OpenAI documents using a browser extension when a task needs your existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs or Chrome extensions. In ChatGPT desktop or a side chat, you can refer to an open tab and have that page supplied as context. This is different from opening a page inside ChatGPT’s built-in browser: that browser keeps separate browser state, so its cookies, extensions and tabs are not automatically the same as those in your normal Chrome profile.

Setup and a typical request
- Install the supported ChatGPT browser extension and approve the browser permissions it requests.
- Keep the target page open in the Chrome profile that contains the relevant login or extension.
- Open ChatGPT desktop or the browser side chat and name the tab in your request, such as asking for a summary of the article currently open.
- For a task that changes a website, read the proposed action and approve it only when the destination, fields and scope are correct. OpenAI’s controls include confirmations plus allowlists and blocklists.
The extension is useful when the answer depends on a session you already established, such as a private dashboard or account page. It does not mean every tab is silently copied into every conversation. OpenAI describes open-tab context as being used when a task needs it, and browser-history entries as becoming context only when requested.
History is not the same as tab access
Browser history can contain internal URLs, search terms, activity from signed-in devices and other sensitive telemetry. A request for history is therefore broader than asking about one visible page. Treat a history request as a separate permission decision, and narrow the request to the entries needed for the task.
How Gemini in Chrome shares tabs
Current tab first, explicit selection for more
Gemini in Chrome uses the current tab by default. On desktop, Google says you can share up to 10 of your recent open tabs across your browser windows. The sharing is explicit: in the Gemini interface, add the tabs you want included and remove them when they are no longer relevant.
Desktop workflow
- Opt in to Gemini in Chrome.
- With the page you want to discuss visible, open Gemini; that current tab is the starting context.
- Use the tab-sharing control to add other recent tabs, up to the documented limit of 10 on desktop.
- Ask for a comparison, synthesis or answer that names the tabs you shared; remove a tab before asking a follow-up that should not use it.
- Stop sharing a tab when finished. Google also provides a setting to turn off sharing of the current tab by default.
Gemini’s tab picker is a good fit for research sessions where you want a controlled set of sources rather than everything open in the browser. If a shared page belongs to Google Workspace, Gemini may be able to access more of the underlying document through the Workspace account that is signed in. That account-level access can reveal document content that is not visible in the currently rendered portion of the page, so share Workspace tabs only in conversations where that exposure is intended.

How Claude in Chrome reads and acts on tabs
Active-tab reading
Anthropic states that the side panel reads the tab you are on with no extra setup. Install the Chrome extension and grant its permissions; enable the connector when a workflow requires it. The active page is therefore the natural starting point, rather than an automatic export of every open tab.
Cross-tab comparison and browser control
Claude can summarize or compare what is open across tabs. It can also click, type, navigate and fill forms, using existing logins for internal dashboards, legacy systems and vendor portals. Those capabilities make Claude closer to a browser agent than a read-only summarizer.
- Install the Claude in Chrome extension and approve only the permissions appropriate for the profile you are using.
- Open the side panel on the page to be analyzed and confirm that the connector is enabled if Claude requests it.
- Ask for a specific operation, such as comparing prices or policy language across the tabs you have open.
- Before allowing a click, submission or form fill, inspect the target URL, entered values and any side effects.
No fixed maximum number of tabs is stated in the cited documentation. For large research sets, identify the pages by title or purpose and work in smaller batches so you can verify which content Claude used.
What “read your tabs” actually includes
Rendered page versus account content
At minimum, tab context can include the text and structure visible in the page. A signed-in session can add private material behind that page: account details, internal dashboards, order data or documents. Claude’s ability to use existing logins and Gemini’s Workspace behavior make this distinction explicit; ChatGPT’s extension likewise relies on the profile and session you choose.

One tab, selected tabs and every tab
These products use three different scopes. Claude starts with the active tab and can compare across tabs when asked. Gemini starts with the active tab but requires you to select additional tabs, with a desktop ceiling of 10. ChatGPT brings an open-tab context into a conversation when the task calls for it, but OpenAI does not publish a fixed count. None of those descriptions should be read as permission to inspect your entire browser silently.
Tab context versus browsing history
A tab is a live page; history is a record of past activity. History may include pages that are closed, internal URLs and searches unrelated to the current task. Keep a history request separate from a tab-sharing request and provide the narrowest scope that answers your question.

Review extension permissions
Browser extensions can request broad access to page content, navigation and browser state. Install them in a profile intended for the work, check the permission prompt, and avoid leaving highly sensitive banking, health or administrative tabs open while testing a new workflow.

Assume page instructions are untrusted
Anthropic warns that hidden instructions in webpages, emails or forms can redirect an agent. A page might tell an assistant to disclose a secret, upload a file or visit a different site. Treat all instructions originating in page content as data, not as authority.

- Ask the assistant to summarize or draft before granting an action.
- Verify the destination, recipient, amount and form fields immediately before approval.
- Do not paste passwords, recovery codes or one-time authentication codes into a chat.
- Close or unshare unrelated tabs, especially pages containing personal or company-confidential information.
- After a task, remove shared tabs, disable the connector or turn off the extension when it is not needed.
Use the product controls
ChatGPT provides confirmations, allowlists and blocklists for site actions, while history context is request-scoped. Gemini lets you stop sharing a tab and disable current-tab sharing by default. Claude requires extension permissions and a connector for workflows that need them; its ability to operate a page means every approval should be treated as a consequential action.
Which assistant should you choose?
| Your task | Most suitable documented option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize one page you are viewing | Gemini in Chrome or Claude in Chrome | Both start from the current tab; Claude’s side panel reads it without extra setup |
| Compare a known set of many open research pages | Gemini in Chrome | Desktop sharing explicitly supports up to 10 selected tabs |
| Compare tabs while also clicking, typing or submitting forms | Claude in Chrome | Cross-tab comparison and browser actions are documented together |
| Work inside an existing Chrome profile with signed-in pages or extensions | ChatGPT browser extension | Its stated purpose is using the existing profile, session, tabs and extensions |
| Use a private Workspace document behind a shared page | Gemini in Chrome | Google documents account-level access to the underlying Workspace document |
| Keep the assistant from acting without approval | ChatGPT or Gemini | ChatGPT documents confirmations; Gemini emphasizes explicit sharing and stop-sharing controls |
Troubleshooting common tab-access failures
The assistant cannot see the page
- Confirm that the extension is installed in the same browser profile as the tab.
- Recheck extension permissions and connector status.
- For Gemini, make sure the tab appears in the sharing picker and has not been removed.
- For ChatGPT, remember that the built-in desktop browser has separate state from your normal Chrome window.
The answer uses the wrong tab
Close unrelated pages or name each tab by its title and purpose. With Gemini, remove every tab that should not be part of the prompt. With Claude, bring the intended page to the foreground before opening the side panel. For ChatGPT, restate which open tab should supply context rather than assuming the assistant will infer it.
A login wall or dynamic page produces an incomplete answer
Some content appears only after scripts run, a second factor is completed or a particular account role is present. Confirm that the page is fully loaded, keep the session active and ask for the specific section that is visible. Never give the assistant an authentication code merely to overcome a page barrier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn automated action is blocked or unexpected
Check confirmation prompts, allowlists and blocklists in ChatGPT; verify that Claude is connected and that the requested form action is permitted. If a page contains suspicious instructions, stop the run, close the page and restart with a clean tab rather than approving the action.
What this comparison does not establish
The documentation available for this date supports the three options above. It does not establish a current, equivalent tab-access claim for every other assistant, so an assistant not listed here should not be assumed either to support or to lack the feature. Availability can also vary by country, account type, browser version and whether the feature is still being rolled out.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: use Gemini when you want an explicit, capped set of up to 10 desktop tabs; Claude when you need active-tab understanding plus browser actions; and ChatGPT when the task depends on your existing Chrome profile and signed-in session. In all three cases, share only the pages required and approve actions as if the page itself could be hostile.
