If you have a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or a PC that can run Steam games, start with ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. If you play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch, start with ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN. You do not need to play every earlier entry first: Bandai Namco’s series overview says each numbered game has a self-contained story.
The short answer
There is no single objectively best first Ace Combat game established by the official information available. The practical choice is determined mainly by your hardware and by which fictional conflict sounds more appealing.

| Your situation | Recommended starting game | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want the newest numbered release and own a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or a suitable PC | ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE | The current numbered release, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. |
| You own a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch | ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN | Its official publisher information lists those platforms, as well as PC. |
| You want the Osea–Erusea conflict | ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN | Its story is set during the 2019 conflict between Osea and Erusea. |
| You want the newer Republic of Sotoa invasion premise | ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE | Its official announcement places the story in July 2029 and names the Federation of Central Usea as the invaded side. |
| You are worried that you must understand every earlier game | Either numbered game | The official series catalogue describes numbered entries as self-contained stories. |
That table is a starting rule, not a quality ranking. The cited official pages establish release timing, platforms, and broad story premises; they do not establish which game is easiest, cheapest, most accessible, or technically superior for every player.

Why a newcomer can start with a numbered entry
Ace Combat uses a shared fictional setting called Strangereal. The setting has a longer history than any one campaign, but the official series overview distinguishes that background from the structure of the numbered games: each numbered title has its own self-contained story. In practical terms, a new player can begin with the game that fits their platform without treating previous campaigns as required homework.
#1 Best Overall
- Brand new. UK Import PAL version. Game in English. UK Nintendo store account may be required for any online features.
Earlier games may provide extra context about Strangereal’s countries, conflicts, and historical references. That is optional context rather than a stated prerequisite. If you later become interested in the wider setting, you can work backward or forward from your first game without having made a wrong choice.
The distinction matters because “play the series in order” can mean two different things. A strict release-order project is a way to explore the franchise’s history. It is not the same as a requirement for understanding a numbered campaign. For a first purchase, hardware access and the premise you prefer are more defensible selection criteria than an assumed chronology.
The official product catalogue is available through ACES WEB’s series product overview. It is the appropriate reference for the franchise’s self-contained numbered-entry structure.

Platforms and release position
Bandai Namco’s official announcement says ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE released worldwide on October 2, 2026. The announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. If one of those is your available system and your priority is to begin with the newest numbered entry, this is the straightforward route.
“PC” here means the Steam release listed by the publisher. Your computer’s actual performance, graphics settings, storage needs, and peripheral compatibility are not established by the cited announcement, so check the current Steam system requirements before buying. A PC being able to access Steam does not by itself prove that it meets the game’s requirements.
Story premise
The official description places the story in July 2029. It describes the Republic of Sotoa invading the Federation of Central Usea. That premise gives you a later point in Strangereal’s timeline and a different political situation from the conflict in Ace Combat 7.
Choose this entry if the newer setting is the part that attracts you, rather than because “newest” automatically means “best.” The sources do not provide a comparative difficulty rating, review score, performance test, or accessibility ranking. Those are separate questions that depend on the player and, for PC, the specific computer.
Physical and digital editions
The release announcement refers to physical and digital preorder editions. Availability, pricing, and included bonuses can differ by country and storefront, so verify the listing for your region rather than relying on a retailer description copied from another market.
The same announcement describes a collector-focused Joker Flight Pack. It includes the Deluxe Edition, an official artbook, two LP vinyl records, a slipcase, and a slipmat. This is an optional physical package for someone who wants display items; nothing in the official description makes it necessary to understand or play the campaign. Stock and regional contents should be confirmed at the time of purchase.
For the release announcement and its listed platforms and editions, use the official ACE COMBAT 8 announcement.
Start with ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN when it is the game you can actually play
Platform access
ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN is the practical first choice for players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. The publisher’s official materials also list PC, so it remains an option when your computer or preferred storefront does not provide access to the newer release.
Platform access is more important than an abstract release-order rule. A game you can purchase and play on your existing system is a better starting point than a newer title that requires hardware you do not own. Confirm the specific edition and current regional availability before checkout, particularly for physical copies.
Story premise
The official product information describes a 2019 conflict involving Osea and Erusea. Choose this game when that setting is more compelling to you, or when you want to begin with the entry available on your console. Its story is separate enough to serve as a newcomer’s introduction under the series overview’s self-contained-story model.
What the official page says about the game
The publisher characterizes Ace Combat 7 as a narrative-driven flight-combat game with modern and futuristic aircraft and an immersive storyline. Those are official positioning statements, not a promise that every player will find the campaign easy or that its presentation will suit every preference. The available source does not supply a head-to-head technical comparison with Ace Combat 8.
Rank #3
- Innovation in the Sky: Breathtaking clouds coupled with highly detailed aircraft and photorealistic scenery makes this the most engaging Ace Combat to date.
- Return to Strangereal: The alternative Ace Combat universe composed of real-world current and near-future weapons, but with a history steeped in Ace Combat lore.
- Virtual Combat for unprecedented immersion
PlayStation VR missions
The official page notes that its VR missions are exclusive to PlayStation VR. That is a specific feature of the PlayStation version, not evidence that the entire campaign requires a headset. If VR is the reason you are considering this entry, verify the headset, console, edition, and current support details for your setup before purchasing.

Do you need to play Ace Combat in release order?
No, not for the main story of a numbered entry. The official series overview explicitly says that numbered titles each feature a self-contained story. That statement supports two sensible approaches:
- Entry-first approach: pick Ace Combat 8 or Ace Combat 7 according to your platform and preferred premise. This is the best route for most newcomers who want to start playing immediately.
- History-first approach: explore older releases in release order after you know that you enjoy the series. This treats Strangereal as a long-running fictional history rather than making prior games a barrier to entry.
The shared setting can reward a returning player who recognizes references, but the official material does not say that those references are required to follow either campaign. Avoid buying an unavailable or incompatible older title solely to satisfy an assumed order requirement.
A “numbered entry” recommendation also avoids implying that every spin-off, remaster, or regional edition must be completed first. The evidence supplied for this guide concerns the numbered games’ story structure and the currently listed editions of Ace Combat 7 and Ace Combat 8.
Choose by hardware before choosing by chronology
PlayStation 5
On PlayStation 5, Ace Combat 8 is the direct newest-entry choice. Select Ace Combat 7 instead if its Osea–Erusea conflict is the premise you specifically want, or if you are seeking its PlayStation VR missions and have the required VR setup. The existence of a newer game does not erase the older game’s distinct setting or feature list.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S owners can begin with Ace Combat 8, which the official announcement lists for that console family. If you are deciding between the two games rather than simply buying the newest one, use the story-setting table below: the choice is between the 2029 Sotoa and Federation of Central Usea invasion premise and Ace Combat 7’s 2019 Osea–Erusea conflict.
Rank #4
- Unreal Engine 4 technologies: Breath-taking clouds coupled with highly detailed aircraft and photorealistic scenery makes this the most engaging Ace Combat to date.
- Dynamic Weather: Witness the sudden changes during your flight and strive to fight the environmental conditions to take advantage over your enemy.
- Virtual Combat: VR missions made exclusively for the PlayStation VR that provide unprecedented flight immersion.
- Return to Strangereal World: The alternative Ace Combat universe composed of real-world current and near-future weapons, but with a history steeped in Ace Combat lore.
PC
Both entries are relevant to PC players according to the official platform information. Ace Combat 8 is listed on Steam, while Ace Combat 7’s official materials list PC. Check the store page for the exact edition, system requirements, controller support, and regional availability. The supplied official sources do not establish performance results for a particular processor, graphics card, monitor, or operating system configuration.
PlayStation 4
Choose Ace Combat 7 because the publisher lists PlayStation 4 for that game. Ace Combat 8’s announcement lists PlayStation 5 instead, so a PlayStation 4 owner should not assume that the newer entry is available on their console.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Xbox One
Choose Ace Combat 7 because its official platform list includes Xbox One. The Ace Combat 8 announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, not Xbox One. Check the storefront’s exact product page if you are considering a cross-generation purchase, since the listed platforms are the reliable boundary in the supplied information.
Nintendo Switch
Choose Ace Combat 7 because the official publisher materials list a Switch edition. The Ace Combat 8 announcement does not list Nintendo Switch. Confirm whether you want a physical or digital edition and whether it is sold in your region.
The two story settings at a glance
| Game | Story date | Central conflict named by official materials | What that means for a first-time player |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN | 2019 | Conflict involving Osea and Erusea | Choose it for this established setting or when its platform availability matches your hardware. |
| ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE | July 2029 | The Republic of Sotoa invades the Federation of Central Usea | Choose it for the newer timeline and invasion premise when you have a listed current-generation platform. |
The dates are in-world story dates, not a claim that either campaign reproduces real-world history. They help distinguish the premises; they do not establish a preferred order or a universal quality ranking.

Best Value
- Unreal Engine 4 Technologies - Breathtaking clouds coupled with highly detailed aircraft and photorealistic scenery make this the most engaging Ace Combat to date.

- Return To Strange Real-World - The alternative Ace Combat universe is composed of real-world current and near-future weapons, but with a history steeped in Ace Combat lore.
“I want the Sotoa and Central Usea invasion.”
Start with Ace Combat 8. The official announcement names both sides and places the story in July 2029. No earlier numbered campaign is identified as a prerequisite for understanding that premise.
“I want a collector package.”
Look at the Ace Combat 8 Joker Flight Pack only if its physical contents appeal to you. The announced contents are the Deluxe Edition, an artbook, two LP records, a slipcase, and a slipmat. Treat it as a collector purchase, not as a gameplay requirement, and verify local stock and contents.
“I only want the least complicated buying decision.”
Match the game to the console you already own, then use the story premise as a tie-breaker. This avoids making unsupported assumptions about price, difficulty, or technical quality. Current prices and inventory change by region and retailer and are not established by the official pages used here.
What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you
The official sources are strong on release facts, platform lists, story premises, and the self-contained structure of numbered entries. They are not a basis for several common claims that appear in informal recommendations.
- Difficulty: no cited source ranks either game as easier for beginners.
- Price: no current regional price is established here; digital, physical, deluxe, and collector prices can change.
- PC performance: no benchmark covers a particular computer or graphics setting.
- Accessibility: the sources do not provide a comparative accessibility assessment.
- Universal quality ranking: release recency and platform availability do not prove that one campaign is better for every player.
- Retailer or affiliate availability: check live local listings; do not assume a physical or collector edition is in stock everywhere.
Keeping those limits visible prevents a platform guide from turning into an unsupported review. If your decision depends on one of these factors, consult the current store listing, the publisher’s product page, and hardware-specific information for your region.
Three sensible first-play routes
Route 1: current hardware, newest release
- Confirm that you own PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or a PC that meets the current Steam requirements.
- Choose Ace Combat 8 if its 2029 Sotoa–Central Usea invasion premise appeals to you.
- Check the exact edition and regional price before buying.
- Ignore release-order pressure; the official overview treats the numbered story as self-contained.
Route 2: last-generation console or Switch
- Identify whether your system is PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.
- Choose Ace Combat 7, whose official materials list those platforms.
- Pick it with the 2019 Osea–Erusea conflict in mind.
- If you use PlayStation VR, verify the required hardware and edition before relying on the VR-mission feature.
Route 3: undecided PC player
- Check the current Steam pages for both games and compare their requirements with your computer.
- Choose Ace Combat 8 for the newer listed release and 2029 premise, or Ace Combat 7 for the 2019 Osea–Erusea setting.
- Do not infer performance, price, or difficulty from the release date alone.
- Keep the other game as a follow-up option rather than treating it as required preparation.
Final recommendation
For most newcomers with current-generation hardware, begin with ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. It is the newest numbered release and is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. For PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch owners, begin with ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN. Choose Ace Combat 7 on newer hardware as well if its 2019 Osea–Erusea conflict or PlayStation VR missions are the reason you are interested.
Whichever numbered game you select, you are not skipping a required prologue. The official series overview describes numbered titles as self-contained stories, making platform access and story preference the soundest first-choice criteria.
