The best way to make Where Winds Meet feel smooth while exploring is to start with a performance-focused configuration, then raise image quality one change at a time while checking the areas you actually play. There is no officially verified, universal settings recipe for every PC, PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Hardware headroom, display capability, storage, and the options exposed by your current game build all matter.
Use the platform-specific guidance below as a safe starting method rather than as a guaranteed frame-rate target. The official material does not publish a single target that every scene or platform must maintain.

What “smooth exploration” should mean
For an exploration-heavy game, smoothness is more than the highest number shown by a frame counter. You want camera movement, traversal, combat transitions, and busy settlements to remain consistent enough that the world does not feel uneven. A slightly softer image that remains consistent is usually more comfortable than a sharper image that repeatedly drops or stutters.

First identify your platform and installation source
Before changing graphics options, establish which requirements apply to your copy. The official launcher guide and the Steam listing publish different storage figures, so they should not be blended into one specification.
Official PC launcher tiers
The official Where Winds Meet launcher guide (2025) lists Windows 10/11 x64, an Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, an RTX 2070 SUPER, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A750, and 32 GB of RAM for its recommended tier. It lists 100 GB of available SSD space for both recommended and high tiers. Its high tier lists an Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, an RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT, 32 GB of RAM, and 100 GB of available SSD space.
The same guide lists 60 GB of available HDD space at minimum and says an SSD is recommended. It does not quantify a frame-rate or stutter improvement from moving to an SSD. Its wording is direct: “For the best experience, we recommend installing the game on an SSD.”

Steam’s published figures
Steam lists a different set of storage numbers. Its minimum specification is an Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 with 6 GB or RX 480 with 8 GB, DirectX 12, and 130 GB available space. Steam’s recommended specification is an Intel Core i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 2070 SUPER, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A750, DirectX 12, and 200 GB available space. Steam also recommends an SSD.
| Source and tier | Processor | Graphics | Memory | Storage and other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official launcher, recommended | Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | RTX 2070 SUPER, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A750 | 32 GB | 100 GB available on SSD; Windows 10/11 x64 |
| Official launcher, high | Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT | 32 GB | 100 GB available on SSD |
| Steam, minimum | Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 480 8 GB | 16 GB | 130 GB available; DirectX 12; SSD recommended |
| Steam, recommended | Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | RTX 2070 SUPER, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A750 | 32 GB | 200 GB available; DirectX 12; SSD recommended |
Use the row that matches your distribution. The launcher’s 100 GB recommendation and Steam’s 200 GB recommendation describe different listings; neither should be presented as a universal storage requirement for every installation.
Why SSD installation matters, and what it does not prove
An SSD is the sensible default when you have a choice. The official launcher guide recommends one for the best experience and warns that downloads may be slower when the game is installed on an HDD. Steam also recommends SSD installation.

- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
That advice is qualitative. The official material does not promise a particular FPS increase, eliminate every hitch, or establish a benchmark comparing HDD and SSD. An SSD can still be full, thermally constrained, or shared with other demanding work. Keep enough free capacity for updates and temporary files rather than filling the drive to its limit.
On Xbox, the official launch FAQ recommends keeping 150–200 GB of free storage, depending on the device, so patches have room to install. This is free-space guidance, not a claim that the installed game itself always occupies that amount. Check the available space on the actual console before downloading a large update.
Best PC settings: a hardware-aware setup sequence
Do not begin by copying a list of ultra, high, or low values from another PC. Start with the machine’s headroom and the options visible in your current build.
1. Check the machine against both relevant lists
Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, DirectX support, and free space with the launcher guide if you use the standalone launcher, or Steam’s listing if you use Steam. If your computer is around the recommended tier, begin conservatively rather than assuming every quality option can remain high. If it is closer to a minimum specification, plan for lower image-quality settings and a less demanding output resolution.
2. Install to an SSD and leave update headroom
Choose an SSD when practical. Confirm that the destination has the space required by your distribution and additional room for patches. If the game is on an HDD and exploration feels uneven, moving the installation is a reasonable first diagnostic step because it follows the developer’s own storage recommendation; it is not a guaranteed cure.

If the current graphics menu includes a performance-focused preset, use it as the baseline. The official sources do not document the exact label or the individual values inside such a preset, so do not assume that a setting called “performance,” “balanced,” or a similar name has identical behavior after every update.

4. Confirm the actual menu before changing advanced options
Look for the options your build really exposes. Possible categories include output resolution, resolution scaling, an upscaler, frame generation, quality presets, and a frame-rate cap, but the reviewed official material does not establish that every category appears on every PC or that every GPU supports it. Do not enable an option solely because a guide for another version mentions it.
- Resolution scaling: renders internally at a lower or variable resolution and presents the result at the selected output resolution. Lower internal resolution can reduce GPU work, at the cost of image detail.
- Upscaling: reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Check the available quality modes and inspect distant foliage, thin objects, and text for artifacts.
- Frame generation: creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames when supported by the game and hardware. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not replace the underlying rendering performance and may not be available on your system.
- Frame-rate cap: limits the maximum presented rate. If your frame pacing is erratic, a cap offered by the game or display setup may produce a steadier feel than allowing unrestricted swings; choose a value only after observing what your hardware can sustain.
5. Raise quality one control at a time
Once the baseline feels consistent, increase one quality control, apply it, and revisit the same type of exploration area. Keep a short note of what changed. If traversal remains smooth, test the next change. If consistency worsens, revert the last change instead of lowering everything blindly.
Prioritize the output resolution and reconstruction mode first, then the settings that visibly affect the scenery you care about. A higher preset is not automatically better if it causes repeated drops in a dense town or during a long camera pan. Because no official per-setting performance table is available, judge each change on your own hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Test where you actually explore
A menu or empty field is not a sufficient test. Walk through a busy settlement, move between indoor and outdoor spaces, rotate the camera across distant scenery, and repeat a route after loading. Note sudden pauses, uneven camera motion, texture or geometry pop-in, and image breakup. Use the same route after each change so that your comparisons are meaningful.
How to troubleshoot stuttering on PC
Stuttering has several possible causes, and the official pages do not attribute it to one universal setting. Work through the least disruptive checks first.
If the game is installed on an HDD
Move it to an SSD if you have suitable space. This follows the official launcher recommendation and Steam’s SSD guidance. Re-test the same exploration route after the move. Do not describe the result as a guaranteed FPS gain; the documented benefit is a recommendation for the overall experience and faster downloads on SSD compared with HDD.

- STAY COOL, RUN FAST: Push limits, not temperatures. A 5nm controller boosts power efficiency up to 49% over the 990 PRO SSD³, while advanced thermal control keeps performance smooth and reliable.
If the GPU is at its limit
Reduce the output burden using options that are actually present in your menu: lower output resolution, reduce resolution scale, or select a less demanding upscaling quality. Apply one change at a time. If the image becomes too soft, restore the previous value and try a different control rather than making several changes at once.
If performance swings between areas
Use the most demanding area as your reference, not the easiest one. A performance-oriented preset or a lower quality level may provide a more consistent experience across settlements and open travel. If your build offers a frame-rate cap, test it after establishing the rate your system can hold in those areas. The official sources do not specify a universal cap value.
If an advanced option is unavailable
Availability can depend on the current build, graphics hardware, platform, or display path. Do not force a setting through undocumented configuration files or assume that a console feature has an equivalent PC toggle. Use the controls the game exposes and recheck them after patches.
If free space is tight
Free the amount recommended for your distribution before troubleshooting visual settings. Steam lists 130 GB minimum and 200 GB recommended available space; the official launcher lists 60 GB available on HDD at minimum and 100 GB on SSD for recommended and high tiers. These figures describe their respective listings, so follow the one that applies to your installation.

Begin in the game’s own options, then verify the PS5 system and display are configured for the features you intend to use. The official PlayStation page does not publish a complete menu map or a guaranteed frame-rate target, so do not assume that a particular “quality” or “performance” mode exists unless it appears in your current build.
PS5 Pro features
PlayStation identifies PS5 Pro enhancements including higher rendering resolution, optimized ray-tracing effects, and PSSR support. It also describes 4K presentation on a compatible display. These are platform and presentation claims, not proof that every scene renders natively at 4K, that every effect is always active, or that a particular frame rate is guaranteed.

If you own a PS5 Pro, enable the display features your television or monitor genuinely supports, then compare the available in-game choices. If a sharper option makes camera movement less consistent, choose the smoother option exposed by the game. Avoid treating the presence of PSSR or optimized ray tracing as a reason to force every visual feature on.
Base PS5
For a base PS5, check the same current in-game options without assuming PS5 Pro enhancements are available. Set the console and display to a compatible output, and evaluate exploration in a busy area rather than relying on a static scene. The absence of a published universal frame-rate target means the practical test is consistency on your system.
Display and accessibility checks
PlayStation lists Clear Text, Large Text, and Visual Comfort (Basic) accessibility features. These can improve readability and reduce visual fatigue during long exploration sessions, independently of rendering quality. Use them when text size, contrast, or visual comfort is a bigger problem than sharpness.
Xbox Series X and Series S: what the official features mean
Xbox Wire reports HDR support and AMD FSR 2 upscaling. Its June 9, 2026 announcement says Series X provides a 4K upscale from 1080p and Series S provides a 2K upscale from 900p.
Those figures describe the Xbox platform’s reported upscale path; they are not selectable native-resolution settings and do not establish identical rendering quality or a stable frame rate in every scene. A 4K output from Series X and a 2K output from Series S should not be compared as if both consoles render internally at those final resolutions.
Series X setup
- Confirm HDR is enabled on the television or monitor and in the console display setup if your screen supports it.
- Open the current game options and use only the modes and controls shown there.
- Compare image stability and motion in a busy exploration route, not only in a quiet area.
- If the game offers a choice between visual quality and smoother performance, select according to your priority and re-test the same route.
Series S setup
- Use a display configuration compatible with the console and verify HDR only if the display supports it correctly.
- Expect the official Xbox description to use a 2K upscale from 900p; do not interpret that as a promise of native 2K rendering or a fixed frame rate.
- Favor the option that keeps camera movement and traversal consistent in the areas you visit most.
Storage planning on Xbox
Keep 150–200 GB of free storage depending on the device, following the official launch FAQ’s patch-space recommendation. Check the console’s actual free-space reading before a major update; available room can change after other games or captures are installed.
Choosing settings by priority
| Priority | PC approach | Console approach |
|---|---|---|
| Most consistent exploration | Start with a performance-oriented preset if available, use an SSD, and lower output or reconstruction demands until the busiest route is steady. | Choose the smoother option shown by the current game build and judge it in dense areas rather than assuming a platform feature guarantees performance. |
| Maximum image detail | Begin at the recommended hardware tier, raise one control at a time, and keep any change that remains consistent in your test route. | Use the higher-quality option only when motion remains comfortable; PS5 Pro enhancements and Xbox upscaling do not remove the need for this check. |
| Readable, low-fatigue play | Balance sharpness against stable motion and inspect text after enabling any reconstruction option. | On PlayStation, consider Clear Text, Large Text, or Visual Comfort (Basic) alongside the rendering choice. |
| Limited storage | Meet the requirement for your launcher or Steam installation and retain update headroom; prefer SSD installation when possible. | Reserve the Xbox FAQ’s recommended 150–200 GB of free space, depending on device. |
Story Mode and exploration comfort
Rendering settings are only one part of an exploration-focused setup. PlayStation says players who prefer exploration and storyline experiences can choose Story Mode, while Challenge Mode is intended for players who enjoy combat. Multiplayer is optional. Story Mode is therefore a legitimate way to shape the experience around discovery and narrative rather than treating every comfort issue as a graphics problem.
Combine that choice with readable text and visual-comfort features where available. A stable, legible presentation lets you spend longer surveying the world without chasing a nominally higher quality level that makes movement uneven.
A repeatable checklist after patches
- Confirm whether the game is installed on an SSD and whether enough free space remains for updates.
- Check the requirement list for your distribution: official launcher or Steam.
- Open the current graphics menu and record which options are actually present.
- Start from the least demanding sensible preset or mode.
- Test a repeatable route containing dense exploration, camera rotation, and loading transitions.
- Change one option at a time and keep notes.
- Recheck the route after a major patch, because available settings and platform behavior can change.
- On consoles, verify display compatibility for HDR, 4K presentation, or other features before judging the result.
The most defensible “best settings” choice is the one that remains consistent in your own exploration route, on your own hardware, with the controls your current build actually provides. Official platform features and requirement tables are useful starting points, but they are not substitutes for that controlled check.
