Start with the save location configured in WhatsApp, because files you explicitly download are stored there. Media that you only open can remain in WhatsApp’s cache instead of becoming a normal, permanent file. For installations that use macOS app-group storage, a commonly documented diagnostic location is ~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/, which may contain media under Message/Media/ and message history in ChatStorage.sqlite. That path is implementation-specific and can change with an app update or installation channel.
The safest cleanup is selective: quit WhatsApp, copy anything important, identify large media or cache files, delete only those items, leave message databases alone, relaunch the app, and verify your chats before emptying the Trash.

What “WhatsApp files” means on a Mac
People asking where WhatsApp files are stored usually mean one of four different things:
- Downloaded copies: photos, videos, documents, audio or other media that you chose to save from a chat.
- Cached media: items you opened in WhatsApp but did not explicitly download to a user folder.
- Application data: indexes, settings and supporting files that let the desktop app work.
- Conversation databases: local records used to represent message history.
These categories can live in different locations and have very different deletion risks. Removing a duplicate video from a Downloads folder is not the same operation as removing a cache file, and neither is equivalent to deleting a message database.

Where WhatsApp saves files you download
WhatsApp’s Help Center says the desktop app works like other applications: the folder used for saved files depends on your settings. Consequently, the correct destination is whatever save location is configured on your Mac, not a universal WhatsApp path.
Check WhatsApp’s configured save destination
Open WhatsApp and inspect its settings for media or file-download behavior. The exact menu wording can differ between releases, so use the current settings labels shown by your build. If you have selected a custom folder, downloaded items will be placed there. If you have not changed the setting, also check the account’s normal Downloads folder in Finder.
A file that appears in a chat is not proof that a permanent copy exists in Downloads. WhatsApp distinguishes between opening media and choosing a Save or Download action. The former can leave a temporary cached copy; the latter creates the user-saved file in the configured destination.

Find a saved file from Finder
- Open Finder and select the folder configured for WhatsApp downloads.
- Switch to list view and sort by Date Added, Date Modified or Size.
- Use Finder’s search field with a likely extension such as
.jpg,.heic,.mp4,.pdfor.docx. - Open a candidate file to confirm that it is the copy you intend to keep or remove.
Deleting a saved copy from this folder does not automatically remove the corresponding message or every copy of the media elsewhere. A sender’s copy, a phone copy or a cloud-linked copy can follow separate retention rules.
The WhatsApp app-group folder in macOS
Sandboxed macOS applications can store shared data in a group container under ~/Library/Group Containers/<application-group-id>. A maintained technical reference identifies this WhatsApp group on some builds as:
~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/

Within that container, the same reference identifies a Message/Media/ area for media and a file named ChatStorage.sqlite for message history. Treat these names as build-sensitive implementation evidence, not a permanent public API. An update, a different distribution channel or a future storage migration can change the identifier or layout.

- Open
Message/Media/only to identify media you have decided is disposable.
If Finder reports that the folder does not exist, do not infer that WhatsApp has no local data. Your build may use a different group identifier, a different installation layout or another storage location.
Cache locations and what they contain
WhatsApp states that media opened but not downloaded is stored in its cache folder. macOS treats caches as purgeable data that an application should be able to recreate. In general, app-specific caches use a path shaped like ~/Library/Caches/<bundle identifier>, although the exact WhatsApp folder name is not established for every build.
Cache files can be large, especially after viewing many videos or receiving high-resolution media. They are also less valuable than user-saved files because the app can normally recreate needed content by reloading it, subject to account access, message availability and network conditions.
Inspect the user cache area
- Quit WhatsApp.
- Press Shift-Command-G in Finder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/. - Look for a folder clearly associated with WhatsApp or its current bundle identifier.
- Sort the folder contents by size and modification date.
- Move only clearly identified WhatsApp cache files or folders to the Trash.
Do not remove unrelated cache folders simply because they are large. If you cannot confidently associate an item with WhatsApp, leave it in place and use the app’s own storage controls or macOS Storage view instead.
Other WhatsApp data you may see
macOS also provides an Application Support area for persistent app data, generally shaped like ~/Library/Application Support/<bundle identifier>. WhatsApp may use application-support or group-container locations for indexes, settings and other operational files. These files are not automatically disposable just because they are not visible in a chat.

The most important distinction is between media and conversation databases. The documented ChatStorage.sqlite file represents message history. Related SQLite files ending in .sqlite-wal and .sqlite-shm can hold newer transactions or coordination data. Deleting any of these can damage or remove local conversation history, so they should remain untouched unless you are deliberately carrying out a documented full reset or forensic procedure.
Use macOS Storage to locate WhatsApp space
When you are unsure which folder is consuming capacity, use macOS’s storage dashboard before browsing hidden directories.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select General, then Storage.
- Review the categories and any available controls for opening or deleting files.
- Use the resulting file list to identify large WhatsApp media or other removable items.
Apple notes that Storage categories and controls can vary by macOS version. The dashboard may show a broad category instead of a WhatsApp-specific line, so use it as a discovery and verification tool rather than proof of one exact folder.

1. Quit WhatsApp before changing its files
Use WhatsApp → Quit or press Command-Q. Closing a window is not necessarily the same as quitting. Wait until the app is no longer running before moving anything from its container, cache or application-support directories. This prevents files from being rewritten while you are inspecting them.
2. Preserve anything you may need
Copy important photos, videos, documents and voice notes to a normal user folder or a backup destination. If local message history matters, make sure your existing backup or account-based recovery method is current. Do not treat a cached copy as your only archive: cache data is intended to be replaceable and may disappear during routine maintenance.
3. Inspect by size, date and type
Use Finder’s list view and sort by size to find large videos and documents. Sort by date when you are cleaning a known period, such as old event media. Open representative files before deleting a group so you know whether they are duplicates, temporary items or the only copy you possess.

4. Delete only identified media or cache content
Move selected media files or cache folders to the Trash. A targeted deletion has a smaller scope and is easier to reverse than removing an entire app-data directory. Keep the parent container and any files whose purpose you cannot establish.

5. Keep message databases and SQLite companions
Leave ChatStorage.sqlite, ChatStorage.sqlite-wal and ChatStorage.sqlite-shm in place. These files can represent message history or pending database transactions. Removing them to reclaim space can produce missing chats or an app that must rebuild local data.
6. Relaunch and test
Open WhatsApp again and check several conversations, including one with media you intentionally retained. Confirm that the app starts normally, chats are present and saved files open from their preserved location. If something is missing, stop and restore the item from the Trash or your backup before making further changes.
7. Empty the Trash only after verification
Keep deleted items in the Trash while you test. Empty it only after you have confirmed that the cleanup achieved its purpose and that no required file was included. Emptying the Trash removes the straightforward rollback option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prefer WhatsApp’s own storage controls when available
Some WhatsApp versions provide chat-level storage or media-management controls that let you remove large files while retaining the conversation history. Availability and wording can vary by rollout. When those controls are present, they are generally safer and more portable than relying on an implementation-specific folder path because the app can distinguish media from its own indexes and databases.
Open the relevant chat or WhatsApp storage-management screen and review the listed items before confirming deletion. Select only media you no longer need, and preserve files that are not backed up elsewhere. If the control is unavailable in your build, use the selective Finder procedure above rather than deleting the whole container.

Choosing a cleanup method
| Approach | Data risk | Reversibility | Scope | Portability across versions | Verification effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp storage or chat controls | Lower when the interface separates media from chats | Depends on whether the app offers recovery; verify before confirming | Usually one chat or selected media | Highest because the app manages its own layout | Review the selection and test the chat afterward |
| Delete selected files from a known save folder | Low for WhatsApp data, but you lose that saved copy | Trash or backup can provide recovery | Specific downloaded files | High; ordinary user folders are stable | Open the folder and confirm the intended files |
| Delete identified cache content | Usually lower because cache data is recreatable | Trash or backup can provide recovery | Cache files or a cache subfolder | Medium; cache names vary by build | Relaunch and confirm media behavior |
| Delete media under the group container | Medium; indexes or app behavior can be affected if selection is careless | Trash or backup, provided the files remain there | A media directory or selected items | Low to medium; the path is implementation-specific | Inspect carefully and test chats after relaunch |
| Delete the entire Group Containers or Application Support directory | High; settings, indexes, media and databases may be removed together | Low unless you made a complete backup | All local app data in that directory | Low; directory layouts differ | Extensive recovery or re-setup may be required |
Common problems and their fixes
“I cannot find the WhatsApp folder in Library.”
The Library folder is hidden in normal Finder browsing, and not every build uses the same app-group identifier. Use Shift-Command-G with the documented path, then check the configured download folder, ~/Library/Caches/ and macOS Storage. A missing group-container path is not evidence that no local WhatsApp files exist.
“The file is visible in a chat, but I cannot find it in Downloads.”
Opening media does not necessarily download it as a user file. Check whether you used Save or Download and inspect WhatsApp’s configured destination. Otherwise, the item may exist only in cache or may be available through the conversation without a permanent Finder copy.
“I deleted cache files, but storage did not drop.”
The deleted items may still be in the Trash, or the largest files may be downloaded media stored elsewhere. Empty the Trash only after verification, then use macOS Storage and Finder size sorting to locate the remaining space. Do not escalate to deleting application-support or database files merely because the first cleanup was smaller than expected.
“WhatsApp behaves strangely after deletion.”
Quit the app, restore the removed items from the Trash if they are still available, and relaunch. If message history or settings are missing, restore from a known backup rather than deleting additional files. Removing SQLite database files or their companion files can be more damaging than removing media.
“Will deleting a Mac copy delete the media from my phone?”
Not necessarily. A local Mac download, a cache entry and a phone or cloud-linked copy can be separate. The result depends on where the item was saved and how your account synchronizes data. Confirm the copy you are deleting before treating the action as a conversation-wide deletion.
A practical maintenance routine
- Use WhatsApp’s own storage screen when your version provides one.
- Once a month, review the configured download folder for duplicate videos and documents.
- Use macOS Storage to identify unusually large categories.
- Quit WhatsApp before manual inspection.
- Back up irreplaceable media and voice notes.
- Remove selected media or cache files, never an entire app-data container as a first step.
- Relaunch WhatsApp and test representative chats.
- Empty the Trash only after you are satisfied with the result.
What to remember about changing folder names
The path ~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/ is useful when it matches your installation, but it should not be copied into a permanent cleanup script without checking the current build. Application sandbox conventions explain why group containers exist; they do not guarantee that WhatsApp will retain one identifier forever. Future releases can relocate media, rename directories or change how downloads and caches are separated.
The durable rule is therefore procedural rather than path-based: identify the user-saved destination, distinguish cache from permanent media, protect the conversation database, and verify after relaunch.
