It is not presented as a prerequisite-heavy choice
VII belongs to the numbered sequence, but the available evidence does not establish that you must finish I through VI before playing it. You may encounter returning setting or series context, yet that is different from a requirement to complete previous games. If you are curious about VII’s premise, start there and look up unfamiliar references only when they become relevant.
Who should select VII?
- You want a later point in the numbered line.

Choose one of the two Ultima Underworld games when the first-person, dungeon-focused branch is itself the attraction. EA lists both titles as part of the wider franchise, but they are related branches rather than the default way to follow the numbered main story.
Use Underworld as a focused side route
This option is appropriate when you want to sample a different expression of the Ultima setting or specifically seek a first-person dungeon experience. It is less appropriate when your primary goal is to trace the numbered sequence from its historical foundation.

Treating one route as the official answer
IV and VII answer different needs. Calling VII wrong because it is installment seven, or calling IV mandatory because it is foundational, turns a preference decision into a false rule. Choose according to interface tolerance and desired play feel.
Assuming every branch is required
Underworld and Online expand the franchise but are not established prerequisites for a first numbered game. Start with them only when their branch-specific format is what you want.
