For most newcomers, start with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) on PS5 or PC. It is a self-contained story, uses modern controls and presentation, and is the easiest mainline entry to access on current hardware. Konami describes it as a full remake of the 2001 PlayStation 2 game, with expanded areas, an over-the-shoulder camera, revised combat and new cut-scenes. That makes it an accessibility recommendation, not a claim that it is objectively the franchise’s best game.
Choose the 1999 Silent Hill first if your priority is experiencing the series from its beginning, and play that game before Silent Hill 3 if connected story context matters. Silent Hill f is an optional standalone starting point for a Japanese setting, while the free Silent Hill: The Short Message on PS5 is a short taste rather than a replacement for a full game.

The short answer: which Silent Hill game should you play first?
There is no single order that fits every reader. The practical choice depends on four things: the hardware you own, whether you want modern or original presentation, how much the first game’s story context matters to you, and which setting interests you.
| Your priority | Best starting point | What to know first |
|---|---|---|
| Modern controls and straightforward access | Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) | Konami lists PS5 and PC/Steam; verify the current regional edition and retailer listing. |
| The series’ beginning and original release context | Silent Hill (1999) | Konami’s European listing names PlayStation, PlayStation Vita and PSP, all legacy platforms. |
| Connected first-game story | Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3 | Do not begin with Silent Hill 3 if you want the preceding story context. |
| A new story in a Japanese setting | Silent Hill f | Konami presents new characters and settings and says newcomers can enjoy it. |
| A free, short introduction | Silent Hill: The Short Message | It is a free PS5 game; availability can vary by region and it is not the main recommendation. |
The rest of this guide explains what each route gives you, what it requires and how to avoid buying the wrong version.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the two classic Silent Hill titles previously released on PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams & Silent Hill 3, that defined the Survival Horror genre in its early inception
- Both titles re-mastered to HD at 720p for improved graphics on PlayStation 3
- Completely updated in-game voiceover directed by series vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and soundtrack score enhancing the storytelling and ambient music within each re-mastered game
- Full PlayStation Network Trophies support integration
Why Silent Hill does not have one mandatory play order
The franchise began in 1999, according to Konami Group’s 2026 report. Its games are not presented as one uninterrupted campaign that every newcomer must complete in release order. The important exception in the material available here is Silent Hill 3: if you want its connected story context, play the original Silent Hill first.
For other entries, use interest and access as your guide rather than assuming that a chronological run is automatically the best first experience. A remake can be a more practical introduction than a difficult-to-source original, and a new setting can be more appealing than revisiting an older release. That is why “best first game” is a decision about the experience you want, not a universal franchise ranking.
Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) if you want the easiest modern entry
What you get
Konami calls the 2024 release a full remake of the original Silent Hill 2, which first released on PlayStation 2 in 2001. The remake retains the original game’s identity while changing substantial presentation and play elements: areas are expanded, the camera moves to an over-the-shoulder view, combat is revised and new cut-scenes are added. The development team described it as “a remake with respect toward the original” in a PlayStation Blog development article. That is the team’s characterization, not an independent review score.
The story is self-contained enough for a newcomer to begin here without completing another Silent Hill game. A 2025 GamesRadar beginner’s guide also frames the remake as an easy way to jump in. Those points make it the sensible default when you want current controls and a straightforward purchase path rather than historical context.
Platforms, date and editions
Konami’s product page lists the remake for PS5 and PC via Steam and gives 8 October 2024 as the release date. Konami’s U.S. release announcement said physical and digital editions were offered. Stock, packaging and regional availability can change, so check the current store listing before paying. On PC, confirm that the listing is the 2024 remake rather than a page or discussion referring to the 2001 original.
Rank #2
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Who should choose it
- You have a PS5 or a PC and want a game you can buy and start without sourcing legacy hardware.
- You prefer an updated camera, revised combat and newly expanded content over the original presentation.
- You want a self-contained entry and do not want to study a franchise timeline first.
Choosing the remake does not prevent you from playing the 1999 original later. It simply puts modern access ahead of release-history completeness.
Start with Silent Hill (1999) if the beginning matters most
Why this route is different
The first Silent Hill gives you the original release context and is the natural choice for readers who want to begin where the series began. Konami’s European product page lists PlayStation, PlayStation Vita and PSP. Those are legacy platform listings, not a promise that the game is currently sold digitally or works on every modern console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe hardware and buying caveat
The 2025 GamesRadar guide notes that the original games are less convenient to access on modern equipment. In practice, you may need compatible legacy hardware or a legitimate used copy, and availability depends on your region. Check the platform, disc format and condition before buying. A used PS1 copy is best treated as a conditional option for collectors or readers who already have compatible hardware, not as the default recommendation for everyone.
Do not assume that owning a PS5 automatically gives you a supported way to play the 1999 release. Verify the exact platform and store listing in your country. If obtaining the original would require expensive hardware or an uncertain used purchase, the 2024 remake is the more reliable first step.
When this is the right first game
- You care about the franchise’s starting point more than modern presentation.
- You already own compatible PlayStation-era hardware or have a trustworthy local source for a used copy.
- You intend to continue directly into Silent Hill 3 and want the preceding story context first.
The Silent Hill 3 exception: play the first game before it
Silent Hill 3 is the main story-order exception for a newcomer. If your reason for starting with it is its connected narrative, play the 1999 Silent Hill first. The available official material for this guide does not establish a detailed plot summary of that connection, so the useful advice is about order rather than spoilers: starting with the first game supplies context that Silent Hill 3 expects.
Rank #3
- Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
- SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996
If you cannot access the original legally and conveniently, do not force a frustrating hardware hunt solely to follow a supposed complete order. Start with the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake or another route below, then return to Silent Hill 3 when you can experience the earlier game properly.

What makes it a separate entry point
Konami’s support page describes Silent Hill f as featuring new characters and settings and says it can be enjoyed by newcomers as well as returning players. GamesRadar’s 2025 beginner guidance likewise treats it as standing alone. That makes it suitable if you want a fresh setting instead of beginning with either the 1999 game or a remake of an older one.
Konami Group’s 2026 report says Silent Hill f launched in September 2025, was the first new installment in twelve years and the first entry set in Japan. The same report says it passed one million global sales within two days. That is a company-reported sales figure, not a quality rating or a measured accessibility result.
Platforms
Konami’s support listing names PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts: Steam, Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Windows Store. Confirm the listing for your region and preferred storefront before purchase. The support page establishes the platforms, but it does not verify a physical edition, so do not assume a disc release from a retailer listing without checking its edition details.
Who should pick it first
- You want new characters and a new setting rather than the original game’s release context.
- You own a current PlayStation, Xbox or PC platform listed by Konami.
- You are comfortable choosing a standalone branch of the series instead of following the early-game sequence.
The modern default remains the Silent Hill 2 remake because its newcomer guidance and practical access are better established in the available sources. Silent Hill f is an equally legitimate alternative when its setting is the deciding factor.

Use Silent Hill: The Short Message as a free taste, not a full starting route
Silent Hill: The Short Message is a short-form introduction available free on PS5, subject to regional availability. It is useful when you want to sample the series before buying a larger game, but its length and format make it a taste rather than a substitute for the main recommendation.
In a 31 January 2024 PlayStation Blog interview, series producer Motoi Okamoto said: “We’re releasing the whole game for free, so if you’ve never played a Silent Hill game before, we hope you’ll take this chance to get a taste of what Silent Hill is all about.” Check the PlayStation Store in your country, since availability and storefront presentation can change. If the short game interests you, use it to decide whether you want the longer experience offered by one of the full entries above.

A practical route for each kind of newcomer
If you own a PS5 and want to begin tonight
- Check the PlayStation Store listing for Silent Hill 2 and confirm that it is the 2024 remake.
- Check the edition and region before checkout; the U.S. announcement covered physical and digital editions, while local stock can differ.
- If you want to sample the series without buying the remake, look for Silent Hill: The Short Message and verify that it is available in your country.
If you own a gaming PC
- Use Konami’s product information to confirm the Silent Hill 2 remake listing is the PC/Steam version.
- Check the storefront page for the current edition and system requirements before purchase.
- If you prefer a new setting, compare the PC storefront listings Konami names for Silent Hill f: Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Windows Store.
If you want release chronology
- Begin with the 1999 Silent Hill only after confirming that you have compatible hardware or a legitimate regional source.
- Continue to Silent Hill 3 if connected story context is your reason for following this route.
- Approach the other entries by interest and platform rather than assuming every game must be completed in one continuous order.
If you are choosing by setting
- For the classic franchise starting point, choose Silent Hill (1999).
- For the modernized version of an established game, choose Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake).
- For a Japanese setting and new characters, choose Silent Hill f.
- For a free preview, choose Silent Hill: The Short Message on PS5 where available.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing the remake with the 2001 original
The remake is a 2024 release based on the PlayStation 2 game from 2001. Store pages, used listings and forum discussions can use the same title, so check the year, platform and publisher description before buying.
Assuming a legacy listing means modern compatibility
The original game’s PlayStation, Vita and PSP listings describe platforms associated with its release history. They do not guarantee that a current console supports the game or that a digital purchase is available in your region. Verify compatibility first.
Starting with Silent Hill 3 without context
You can choose any entry based on access, but if the connected story is the attraction, the original Silent Hill belongs before Silent Hill 3.
Treating sales as a recommendation score
Silent Hill f’s more-than-one-million sales in two days, reported by Konami Group, indicate commercial performance. They do not measure quality, difficulty or whether its setting suits you.
Final choice
Pick Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) on PS5 or PC if you want the clearest modern entry with current-platform support and a self-contained story. Pick Silent Hill (1999) if experiencing the series from its beginning is more important than convenience, and put it before Silent Hill 3 when story context matters. Pick Silent Hill f for its standalone Japanese setting, or use the free The Short Message on PS5 as a brief test before committing to a full game.
