Start with the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). Halo Support recommends that entry for players who want to experience the games in their original release order. Continue through MCC’s listed sequence before deciding whether you want to explore other timelines or spin-offs. The Paramount+ series is an adaptation set in the Halo universe, not a confirmed continuation of the games’ plot, so treat the first game as your introduction to the game continuity rather than as a direct next episode.
The quick answer
Open Halo: The Master Chief Collection, choose the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign, and play that first. After finishing it, use Halo Support’s release-order sequence for the remaining campaigns. This route lets you meet the setting through the same opening point that established the game series, then follow the numbered progression without asking a newcomer to reconstruct chronology from prequels.

The complete first-playthrough order
Use this order for a first run after watching the series:
#1 Best Overall

- ENHANCED AUDIO & VISUALS — Relive every mission with modernized animations, a remastered soundtrack, and fully rebuilt sound design for deeper immersion across the Halo universe.
- NEW STORY CONTENT — Play as the Master Chief alongside Sgt. Johnson in Operation: Meteorite, a standalone campaign featuring new environments, enemies, and gameplay challenges.

| Step | Campaign | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary | The recommended starting point for the original release order. |
| 2 | Halo 2 Anniversary | The direct follow-up in the release sequence. |
| 3 | Halo 3 | The next numbered chapter in the sequence. |
| 4 | Halo 3: ODST | The campaign Halo Support lists after Halo 3. |
| 5 | Halo: Reach | A later-released campaign that Halo Support places after Halo 3: ODST for release-order play. |
| 6 | Halo 4 | The final campaign in the six-game sequence listed by Halo Support. |
The order can look surprising because Halo: Reach is associated with an earlier point in the broader fictional timeline, yet it was released later. That is exactly why release order is useful for a first exposure: it preserves the way the game series introduced its ideas instead of asking you to start with a later-made prequel.
What the TV series has—and has not—set up
Paramount Press Express describes HALO as an adaptation for Paramount+ set in the universe that first appeared in 2001. Its description frames the show around a 26th-century conflict between humanity and the Covenant. Read that as shared setting and premise, not as a promise that the games resume the show’s final scene.
The cited Paramount description does not establish direct plot continuity between the television series and the games. You should therefore expect familiar concepts and names while allowing the game continuity to tell its own version of events. Starting with Combat Evolved Anniversary avoids the false expectation that you are loading an interactive episode immediately after the season you watched. The official series description is available at Paramount Press Express’s HALO page.

The games are not documented by the cited sources as a scene-for-scene continuation of the series. If you mainly want to understand the game references
Release order still gives you the clearest foundation. The first campaign establishes the game series’ starting point; each subsequent title then arrives in the order the games originally introduced it. You do not need to know a complete fictional chronology before beginning.
Why release order is the safest first route
It follows the official newcomer guidance
Halo Support’s guide is specifically aimed at getting players started with MCC. Its recommendation is not an internet consensus presented as fact; it is the publisher’s stated route for experiencing the games as released.
It avoids an incomplete chronology
A timeline-first route can be a valid personal experiment, but the cited official guide does not provide a complete chronological order for every campaign. Presenting one as the definitive answer would add certainty that the source does not provide. If you are new to Halo, use release order first and investigate chronology only after you understand how the campaigns were published.

It keeps later context from arriving too early
Starting with a later-made prequel can give you information and presentation choices that the original opening game expected players to encounter later. Release order protects the intended progression without requiring you to track which campaign was produced first versus which story era it depicts.

How to begin in MCC
- Confirm your platform. Halo Support identifies MCC as available on Xbox and Windows. Check the current store listing for your device before buying or installing.
- Choose an access method. MCC can be obtained through direct purchase or through some Xbox Game Pass plans. Subscription catalogs and terms can change, so verify that the plan you use includes MCC at the time you start.
- Install the collection and its campaign content. Allow the installation to finish, and check the platform’s add-on or manage-content screen if a campaign is listed separately from the base collection.
- Launch the campaign menu. In MCC, open the Campaign section and select Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Do not choose Halo: Reach first simply because its fictional events are associated with an earlier era.
- Finish or pause the first campaign before changing titles. When you are ready for the next game, return to Campaign and select the next entry in the table rather than jumping between campaigns.
- Keep your order visible. A note with the six steps prevents accidental skips, particularly because the collection presents several campaigns together and one of them is an earlier-set prequel released later.
Store availability, edition details, platform requirements and subscription eligibility are time-sensitive. The official guide confirms the supported platforms and collection contents, but it does not establish a universal current price or guarantee that every Game Pass tier includes MCC.
What to expect from each stop
You do not need a plot synopsis before starting, but knowing each campaign’s role can make the sequence easier to follow.
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
This is your entry point. It is the Anniversary presentation of the campaign Halo Support names for release-order beginners. Treat it as the baseline for the game continuity and use it to learn how the series introduces its world, missions and terminology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHalo 2 Anniversary
This is the second stop in the official sequence. Its placement after Combat Evolved Anniversary means you can approach it with the first campaign’s context rather than trying to infer the series’ foundations from a later title.
Rank #4
- Master Chief can now wield two weapons at once, board Covenant vehicles and steal Covenant weapons like the incredible double energy sword
- Lead an all-new unit of super-soldiers, the ODST -- tougher, badder and deadlier versions of your old comrades
- New enemies, allies and surprises around every corner - intense combat action with enhanced AI and real-time lighting
- Immense single-player action with maassive landscapes and huge cities to explore and defend - destructible and interactive environments
- Take the action online with your Xbox Live and switch sides, to become a Covenant Elite!
Halo 3
Continue to the third listed campaign after Halo 2 Anniversary. Keeping the first three numbered entries together makes the central release progression easy to remember.
Halo 3: ODST
Halo Support places this campaign immediately after Halo 3 in the release-order route. Follow that placement even if another guide groups campaigns by fictional date.
Halo: Reach
Reach comes next in the recommended release sequence. Its later release is the reason it should not automatically become your first game when you are choosing a newcomer route.
Halo 4
Finish the six-game path with Halo 4. At that point you will have completed the exact MCC campaign sequence Halo Support lists for experiencing the releases in order.

Release order versus a timeline-first approach
| Approach | What it means | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | Start with Combat Evolved Anniversary, then follow the six campaigns in Halo Support’s listed order. | Best default for a first playthrough and for readers who want the publisher’s newcomer recommendation. | It does not arrange every event by fictional chronology. |
| Timeline-first | Attempt to place campaigns according to when their stories occur in the universe. | A later replay for players who specifically enjoy reconstructing chronology. | The cited official guide does not provide a complete chronological list, so there is no supported basis here for calling one timeline order definitive. |
If a friend tells you to begin with a different campaign because it is “earlier” in the story, ask whether they mean earlier fictional events or earlier release. Those are different criteria. For the question “What should I play after watching the series?”, the supported answer is release order.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with Reach because it is a prequel. A prequel’s fictional position does not make it the official first-play recommendation. Begin with Combat Evolved Anniversary.
- Expecting the show to continue directly. The cited Paramount material describes an adaptation in the Halo universe; it does not promise game-to-show plot continuity.
- Skipping ODST because it is not numbered. Halo Support explicitly includes Halo 3: ODST in the release-order sequence.
- Assuming every subscription tier includes MCC. Verify the live Game Pass catalog and your account’s eligibility instead of relying on an old listing.
- Buying the wrong edition or platform version. Check that the store listing is MCC for your Xbox or Windows device and that the campaign content you want is included.
- Following an unlabeled online chronology. If a guide does not say whether it means release order or fictional timeline, treat its sequence as a different editorial choice, not a correction to Halo Support’s recommendation.
When to choose a different starting point
There are only a few practical reasons to depart from the recommendation. You might already have played one or more campaigns and want to resume from a known point; in that case, continue from the earliest unfinished entry rather than replaying everything. You might also be replaying Halo and deliberately testing a chronology-first route. Neither situation describes a newcomer who has only watched the adaptation.
If your platform cannot run MCC, first verify current Xbox and Windows availability and the requirements shown by the store. The sources used for this guide do not establish a separate, universally available starting edition for other platforms, so do not assume that any similarly named release provides the same six-campaign collection.
A simple plan for your first week
- Verify that your Xbox or Windows device can access MCC and that your purchase or eligible subscription includes it.
- Install the collection and select the Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign.
- Play that campaign without switching to a prequel for chronological reasons.
- Return to the campaign selector and advance one row at a time through the table.
- After completing Halo 4, decide whether a timeline-focused replay or additional Halo material matches your interest.
Bottom line for viewers coming from the series
Watching the series does not change the recommended first game. Start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC, then play Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4 in that order. You will be following Halo Support’s release-order guidance while treating the Paramount+ adaptation and the games as related versions of the Halo universe, not as one confirmed continuous plot.
