If the first game is available as a remaster or newer presentation on your platform, use that version. This route introduces the characters, conflicts and gameplay systems in the order the series originally presented them.
The best starting order for most newcomers
The simplest answer to “what Gears games do I play?” is the main five-game sequence:

| Order | Game | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gears of War | Introduces the setting, combat, Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and the central conflict. |
| 2 | Gears of War 2 | Continues directly from the first game and expands the scale of the story and battles. |
| 3 | Gears of War 3 | Completes the original trilogy’s major story arc. |
| 4 | Gears of War 4 | Begins the later sequel arc with a new generation while retaining important links to the trilogy. |
| 5 | Gears 5 | Follows the new arc and builds on the characters and events introduced in the fourth game. |
This is a recommendation for a newcomer, not an official rule imposed by Xbox. It is the most readable path because each sequel assumes you understand what came before, and the transition from the original trilogy to the later games makes more sense when experienced in release progression.

Why release order works best on a first playthrough
It preserves the intended story reveals
Prequels can tell you when an event happened without explaining why it mattered when the original audience first encountered it. Starting with the first game lets the series establish its world and characters before later entries add context. That protects the broad progression of discoveries without requiring you to remember a complicated timeline.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
It follows the gameplay’s evolution
The main sequence is a third-person shooter series, but its missions, combat encounters and cooperative design develop from one numbered game to the next. Playing in release progression means you learn the basic cover-based rhythm first, then encounter later refinements naturally rather than moving backward and forward between different eras of design.
It keeps the central character journey coherent
The original trilogy is the foundation of the franchise. The fourth and fifth games shift attention toward a later generation, but they are more meaningful when you already know why the earlier characters and events matter. Skipping directly to a newer entry can leave those connections feeling like unexplained references.
What to expect from each main game
1. Gears of War
Begin with the first game, or a current remaster or updated presentation of it where one is available. This is the entry that establishes the series’ combat language: move between cover, create openings, manage ammunition and coordinate with a partner when playing cooperatively. It also introduces Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, whose relationship anchors the early story.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Do not treat the first game as optional simply because later releases may look newer. Its campaign provides the context used by the rest of the saga. If you are choosing between an original release and a supported remastered version, the newer presentation is a practical substitute for learning the same starting point.
2. Gears of War 2
Continue directly to the second numbered game. It assumes familiarity with the first game’s world and raises the scale of the conflict. Playing it immediately after the opener keeps the cause-and-effect chain clear and avoids the feeling of starting a separate story.
3. Gears of War 3
The third game closes the original trilogy’s main arc. It is the natural stopping point if you want to sample the classic storyline before deciding whether to continue into the later generation. Completing the first three in order also gives you the strongest context for references that appear in the fourth and fifth games.
Rank #3
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
4. Gears of War 4
After the trilogy, move to the fourth game rather than jumping to the fifth. It introduces a later generation and a new phase of the setting, while still relying on the history established by the earlier games. The change in viewpoint is easier to follow when the original trilogy is fresh.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Gears 5
Finish the core path with Gears 5. It continues the sequel arc that begins in the fourth game, so playing those two back to back prevents you from losing track of the newer characters and their conflicts.
Should you start with E-Day instead?
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel, not the first game released in the series. The official Gears description places it fourteen years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts during Emergence Day.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com
- Includes full game of the original Gears of War remastered in 1080p.
- Play five campaign chapters never released on console.
- Experience competitive multiplayer in 60FPS with 19 maps and six game modes.
That makes E-Day a legitimate chronological starting point, but not the default recommendation for a first-time player. Choose it first if you prefer to see the fictional timeline from its earliest major event and are comfortable experiencing a prequel before the original trilogy. Choose the original Gears of War first if you want the franchise’s broad release progression and the way its revelations were originally presented.
Release progression versus story chronology
| Path | Order | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release progression | Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 | Most newcomers; players who want the core saga and its evolving presentation. | You encounter the prequel-era events later, as background or additional context. |
| Broad chronology | E-Day → Judgment → Gears Tactics → Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 | Players who want to arrange the major entries by in-universe setting. | It mixes genres and prequels before the series’ original introduction; it is not an official publisher-mandated order. |
The chronology above is a broad franchise ordering. Exact placement of expansions, bonus chapters or individual story sections can depend on which edition you play, so do not treat the table as a minute-by-minute timeline.
Where Judgment and Tactics fit
Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment is an optional prequel and spin-off. You can add it after completing the core five if you want to preserve the main saga as a self-contained experience, or place it before the original Gears of War when following the broad timeline. It is not required to understand the numbered games.
Best Value
- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics is also set before the original game, but it is not another chapter in the core third-person shooter sequence. It uses turn-based strategy instead. Add it when you want a different tactical format or a fuller tour of the setting, not because the main story requires it.
A practical completionist route is therefore:
- Play the five main games in release progression.
- Add Judgment if you want a prequel campaign in the shooter family.
- Add Gears Tactics when you want the turn-based interpretation of the universe.
- Play E-Day either before the original for chronology or after the core games for a prequel whose context you already understand.
E-Day availability and multiplayer options
Xbox Wire reported that E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026. At launch, it was reported for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam. The Xbox product information lists Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam, with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass availability at launch. Xbox Play Anywhere supports shared progression between Xbox and PC for the applicable digital purchase or entitlement.
Storefront catalogs, regional availability and subscription listings can change, so check the store in your country before buying or subscribing. The launch platforms and subscription terms do not guarantee that the same listing or catalog inclusion will remain unchanged.
| E-Day option | Supported format |
|---|---|
| Solo campaign | Play the campaign alone. |
| Local co-op | Two-player split-screen campaign. |
| Online co-op | Online campaign for up to four players. |
| Platforms reported at launch | Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam. |
| Subscription access reported at launch | Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. |
You do not need to play E-Day cooperatively to understand its place in the timeline. Treat multiplayer as a way to experience the campaign with others, not as a separate prerequisite for the numbered games.
A step-by-step plan for your first playthrough
- Pick your first-game edition. Use the original Gears of War or a current remaster or updated presentation available on your platform.
- Play the first three games consecutively. Avoid inserting Judgment or Tactics between them unless chronology is more important to you than release progression.
- Continue with Gears of War 4. This is the bridge into the later sequel arc.
- Finish with Gears 5. Playing it after the fourth game keeps the newer story and cast together.
- Choose your extras. Add Judgment, Tactics or E-Day after the core route if you want more setting and backstory.
- Use co-op deliberately. For E-Day, decide whether you want solo, two-player split-screen or an online group of up to four before starting the campaign.
- Check access before installing. Confirm your regional storefront, platform edition and current subscription catalog, especially if you are relying on Game Pass.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with the newest numbered game: Gears 5 is not a clean introduction because it follows the fourth game’s newer arc. Start with the first game unless you have a specific reason to sample the latest entry.
- Assuming a prequel must be played first: E-Day’s earlier setting makes it chronological, but chronology and release presentation are different goals. Decide which experience you want before choosing.
- Mixing genres without warning: Gears Tactics is turn-based strategy, not another cover-shooter campaign. Set that expectation before adding it to a marathon.
- Skipping the trilogy before the later games: The fourth and fifth games belong to a later arc, but the original trilogy supplies the history behind many returning elements.
- Confusing launch availability with permanent access: A game reported as available through a subscription at launch may later move between catalogs or vary by country. Verify the current listing.
- Buying extras as if they were required: Controllers, accessories and companion products are not necessary to choose an order or complete a campaign.
Optional companion reading
The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day, published by Insight Editions, is an optional production companion. Xbox Wire describes developer interviews and material covering the game’s art, story, sound and design. It can add development context after or alongside your playthrough, but it is not required background for any game and does not replace playing the campaigns.
Bottom line for a newcomer
Start with Gears of War, then play Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. Use a current version of the first game if available. Add Judgment and Gears Tactics only when you want optional prequel or genre variety. Choose E-Day first only when in-universe chronology matters more to you than experiencing the series in its release progression; otherwise, play it after the core saga as a prequel.
