Most numbered entries tell separate stories, with different worlds, casts and rules. The safest starting point depends on the experience you want: choose FINAL FANTASY XVI for an officially standalone, action-focused mainline game; choose FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE if Midgar and a cinematic character story appeal to you and you are willing to follow a connected remake project; or choose FINAL FANTASY XIV Online if you specifically want an MMORPG rather than a self-contained single-player adventure.
Numbering is a useful way to identify the mainline catalogue, not a universal story order. Named sequels, subseries and remake projects can connect directly, so check continuity before assuming that any title is independent.

Do you have to play Final Fantasy in numerical order?
No. Square Enix’s official Final Fantasy series index presents numbered entries from I through XVI with varied premises rather than one continuing plot. The Roman numerals identify the mainline catalogue; they do not require a newcomer to complete I, II, III and every later number before understanding XVI.

A person who prefers an action-led, modern single-player game can begin with XVI without treating earlier entries as prerequisites. Someone drawn to the world of Midgar can begin with the remake project, provided they understand that it continues beyond the first game. An online player can start with XIV Online, whose structure and ongoing service model are fundamentally different from a numbered single-player entry.

The important qualification is that “numbered” does not always mean “unconnected.” Some games carry subtitles or belong to a named project that links their characters and events. Before buying, look for words such as Remake, Rebirth, Online, Type- or an explicit sequel designation. The official index is a good discovery tool, but it is not a substitute for checking the continuity of the particular title you are considering.
Are the Final Fantasy games connected?
There is no single answer for the entire franchise. The numbered mainline entries are presented as varied premises, while particular subseries and remake projects establish their own continuity. Treat each title as a case to verify rather than applying one rule to every game.
Standalone entry versus standalone experience
A game can be self-contained enough for a new player to understand its own playable story while still belonging to a larger project. Square Enix’s 2020 announcement described FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE as a standalone gaming experience set in Midgar. Later, the publisher identified the remake as the first part of a trilogy. Those statements are compatible: the first game is designed as a complete playable chapter, but it does not conclude the entire remake saga.

This distinction matters when choosing a starting point. If you want one purchase that does not commit you to another story chapter, an officially standalone mainline entry is the clearer fit. If you want to follow a long-form retelling and are comfortable waiting for or purchasing later chapters, the VII remake route can still be an excellent beginning.
How to check continuity before starting
- Read the exact title. A subtitle can signal a sequel, remake or online service even when the Roman numeral looks familiar.
- Check the publisher’s description. Look for “standalone,” “first entry,” “sequel,” “trilogy” or similar wording.
- Confirm your platform and edition. Remake projects may be sold as individual chapters, twin packs or trilogy packages, and availability can vary by platform and date.
- Decide whether an unfinished arc is acceptable. A first chapter can be newcomer-friendly without delivering the final resolution of its wider project.

Start with FINAL FANTASY XVI for a standalone action RPG
FINAL FANTASY XVI is the most defensible modern choice when your priority is a self-contained mainline game with real-time combat. In its June 22, 2023 launch announcement, Square Enix called it “the latest standalone entry in the critically-acclaimed FINAL FANTASY franchise” and described it as an action RPG. The same announcement explains that its RPG features are built around real-time battles rather than turn-based command selection.

That makes XVI a particularly clear recommendation for players who want direct control during fights and a single-player campaign that does not require knowledge of earlier numbered games. It is also a useful option for someone who wants to sample the series without first learning a legacy battle system or a decades-long story history.
Difficulty assistance through Timely Accessories
XVI includes Timely Accessories, which Square Enix presents as a way to tailor the difficulty. These items can reduce the demands of certain actions, allowing a newcomer to adjust the experience instead of treating the game’s default challenge as an all-or-nothing test. Their presence supports the recommendation for players who want action combat but are uncertain about their experience with that format.
Do not interpret this recommendation as a claim that XVI represents every Final Fantasy game. The franchise includes different combat approaches, tones and structures. XVI is a fit for the specific combination of standalone story, action-led battles and adjustable assistance described by its publisher.
Platform and edition check
Platform information changes over time. Square Enix’s June 9, 2025 announcement discussed bringing XVI to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC at that time. Before purchasing, check the current regional store listing for your platform, edition contents and any later availability changes. The publisher announcement supports the 2025 availability statement; it is not a guarantee that every edition remains listed everywhere in 2026.
Start with FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE for Midgar and a connected saga
If the words “Midgar,” “cinematic character story” and “modern remake” are what drew you to Final Fantasy, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is the natural entry point. Square Enix explicitly described the remake as an ideal way for newcomers to enter the project. You do not need to have played the original 1997 game to understand the remake’s own presentation of Midgar.

The essential caveat is continuity. Square Enix’s April 10, 2020 announcement described FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE as a standalone gaming experience set in Midgar. In a later announcement dated September 3, 2026, the publisher identified that game as the first entry in a trilogy and announced the third and final title, FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, for April 8, 2027. The first two remake entries are available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC according to that announcement.
Therefore, “standalone” here means that the first game is a complete playable chapter with its own arc, not that the whole remake narrative ends there. Starting with INTERGRADE is sensible if you welcome a multi-game commitment. It is less suitable if you specifically want a story that reaches its project-wide conclusion in one release.
What the trilogy status means for a newcomer
- You can begin immediately. The publisher’s newcomer-oriented description means prior Final Fantasy knowledge is not a requirement for entering the remake.
- You should expect continuation. The first game is the opening chapter of a three-part remake project, so later events belong to the same connected storyline.
- The final chapter is not released yet as of October 13, 2026. The publisher’s September 3, 2026 announcement schedules FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION for April 8, 2027; do not treat that announced date as a current release.
- Availability and packaging can change. The announcement describes the first two entries on four platform families and a Trilogy Edition giving immediate access to those first two games. Verify whether the physical or digital format you want is actually listed in your region.
Choosing editions without overbuying
If you select this route, you do not need a bundle to understand XVI, XIV Online or any unrelated numbered entry. A twin pack or trilogy package is relevant only when you have decided to follow the connected VII remake project. Compare the individual and bundled listings on your chosen platform, confirm which entries are included, and check whether the package grants access immediately or refers to a future release.
Choose FINAL FANTASY XIV Online for an MMORPG
FINAL FANTASY XIV Online answers a different question from the single-player recommendations. Square Enix identifies it as an MMORPG: a persistent online role-playing game built around a shared service rather than one self-contained campaign purchased solely for solo play.
Choose XIV when the appeal is an online community, long-term character progression and an ongoing game world. Do not choose it merely because you are looking for the shortest route into the numbered series. Its format changes the practical requirements: you need a supported platform, an internet connection and an account or service arrangement defined by the current edition and region. Consult the current official store and service information before committing, because those terms and platform listings are time-sensitive.

For a player who wants to sit down, play a finite single-player story and avoid online-service considerations, XVI is the closer match among the evidence-backed recommendations here. For a player who actively wants an MMORPG, XIV is the appropriate route even though it does not function like a standalone numbered campaign.

Use the official series index as a browsing catalogue, then filter candidates with the questions below. This approach is more reliable than assuming the lowest available number is the correct first game.
1. What combat relationship do you want?
- Real-time action: XVI is explicitly described as an action RPG with real-time combat and RPG features.
- A different or older combat style: Use the index to inspect other premises, then check the specific game’s current description. The source material does not establish a universal ranking of mechanics across every entry.
- Online group play: XIV Online is the MMORPG option, not a conventional standalone campaign.
2. Which setting and tone attract you?
Final Fantasy does not impose one setting across all numbered entries. Read the short premise for the game whose world interests you, whether that is a contemporary remake of Midgar, a new mainline setting or an online world. Selecting by premise is exactly why numerical order is a poor default for newcomers.
3. Do you want one complete purchase or a continuing project?
- One self-contained mainline starting point: XVI is the clearest fit among the documented options.
- A chapter in a larger narrative: VII REMAKE INTERGRADE welcomes newcomers but starts a trilogy.
- An ongoing online service: XIV Online has the MMORPG structure.
4. Which platform do you already own?
Platform availability can change by region, edition and date. The September 2026 announcement lists the first two VII remake entries for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the June 2025 announcement discussed XVI on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. These statements are snapshots, not permanent guarantees. Open the current regional store page before choosing a route, and check whether your desired edition is physical, digital or bundled.
Common starting mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the Roman numerals as a compulsory syllabus

Mistake: assuming every game with the same number is interchangeable
Fix: Read subtitles and project descriptions. The VII remake entries form a connected trilogy even though the first release is presented as a newcomer-friendly standalone experience.
Mistake: expecting XVI to teach you how every Final Fantasy plays
Fix: Treat XVI as one action-RPG interpretation. Its real-time combat and Timely Accessories are reasons to choose it for that experience, not evidence that all other entries use the same systems.
Mistake: buying an MMORPG when you wanted a finite solo game
