Where to Start Watching Stargate: A Beginner’s Guide to the Shows and Movies

For the least confusing first watch, begin with Stargate (1994), continue through all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1, then watch Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum around Stargate Atlantis, finishing with Stargate Universe. The exact interleaving is optional; a specialist continuity order is available if you want the timeline to line up episode by episode.

The best starting point

Stargate (1994) is the cleanest entry because it introduces the ring-shaped portal, the idea of travel between planets and the premise that the television franchise expands. Stargate SG-1 follows the film’s events by one year, so beginning with the movie gives the television series its intended setup without requiring background reading.

There is no studio-mandated order that every viewer must follow. The practical choice is between a simple route, which keeps the number of switches low, and a continuity-focused route, which interleaves episodes from overlapping series. Both reach the same central live-action stories.

The film is also a useful test of whether the franchise suits you. It establishes the central device and the off-world premise in a single feature, while SG-1 asks for a much longer commitment. If you enjoy the film’s concept but prefer television pacing, the series is the natural next step. If you are deciding whether to commit to ten seasons, there is no need to watch optional productions first or learn an episode-by-episode timeline.

The beginner route, in order

  1. Watch Stargate (1994). The film, directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written with Dean Devlin, establishes the Stargate and the basic premise of off-world exploration.
  2. Watch all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1. Created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the series follows an Earth military team exploring other worlds through the gate. It is the ten-season center of the original television run.
  3. Watch Stargate Atlantis seasons 1 and 2. Atlantis is the five-season spin-off created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper. Starting it after SG-1 lets you move into the next setting without repeatedly changing shows.
  4. Watch Stargate: The Ark of Truth. This sequel film continues the SG-1 story. Its stated placement is after the SG-1 finale and before the Atlantis season-three finale.
  5. Watch Stargate: Continuum. This second direct-to-video SG-1 film involves Ba’al changing history. Place it after The Ark of Truth when following the recommended timeline.
  6. Finish Stargate Atlantis seasons 3 through 5. This resumes the spin-off after the two films and keeps the films before the point in Atlantis where their placement matters.
  7. Watch both seasons of Stargate Universe. Created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, it follows a team aboard the Ancient ship Destiny and is best saved for the end of the original live-action run.

This route requires only one pause inside Atlantis. If you care more about uninterrupted seasons than exact chronology, you can watch all of Atlantis in one block after SG-1, but the placement above follows the stated relationship between the films and the third season more closely.

For a first-time viewer, the important handoffs are easy to remember: the 1994 film leads into SG-1; SG-1 leads into the wider television setting; Atlantis is the major spin-off; and Universe is the final stop in this original live-action path. The two films are not separate reboots. They are additional SG-1 stories, so they belong after that series has concluded.

Simple order versus continuity order

Route What to watch Who should choose it
Simple first watch Stargate (1994) → SG-1 → Atlantis with the two films inserted before its season-three finale → Universe New viewers who want momentum and few switches
Continuity-focused Follow GateWorld’s optimized guide, alternating the overlapping portions of SG-1 and Atlantis while keeping connected multi-part stories together Viewers who want broadcast-era chronology to line up more precisely
Completionist Use either route, then sample Origins and Infinity as optional extras Viewers who want to explore every major screen production

GateWorld’s optimized guide was published on September 13, 2024. It prioritizes original broadcast order and groups connected stories, but it is a viewing recommendation rather than an official requirement. The studio has not prescribed a single mandatory interleaving. For a first viewing, switching between two long-running series can interrupt momentum, so the simple route is usually the better default.

The continuity route is most useful when you enjoy noticing how the overlapping shows share a television-era setting. It is not a test of fan knowledge, and there is no penalty for watching one complete series before moving to the next. If you choose it, keep the guide open and resist making up a personal switch point after every episode. Multi-part stories should stay together, even when that means departing slightly from a strict broadcast sequence.

Why SG-1 comes before the spin-offs

SG-1 is not a side story that can be skipped on the way to the newer shows. It is the direct television continuation of the 1994 film and runs for ten seasons, giving the franchise its principal Earth team, its exploration format and the story threads that later productions build on. Watching it first also makes the transition to Atlantis easier because the spin-off grows out of the same television-era setting.

The first-season date is 1997, while the series runs through 2007. The film therefore supplies the premise, and SG-1 supplies the long-form television foundation. You do not need to memorize production history, but knowing that relationship explains why the film is recommended before the series rather than treated as an optional prequel.

Ten seasons is a substantial time commitment, so plan around the format you actually prefer. A complete-series disc set can make a long run easier to keep organized, while streaming may be more convenient if every season is available locally. Neither format changes the order. Check whether each season is included in a subscription or offered separately before assuming that one service carries the entire run.

Where the two SG-1 films fit

The Ark of Truth

Stargate: The Ark of Truth is a 2008 sequel to SG-1. Its useful placement is unambiguous for this guide: watch it after the series finale. It belongs before the Atlantis third-season finale, which is why the beginner route pauses Atlantis after its second season.

Do not place it at the beginning of Atlantis, and do not treat it as a replacement for the final SG-1 episodes. It is a follow-up film, not a pilot for the spin-off. Finish the television series first so the film functions as a continuation rather than an unexplained detour.

Continuum

Stargate: Continuum, also released in 2008, is another direct-to-video SG-1 film. Its premise involves Ba’al changing history, so watching it after The Ark of Truth keeps both films together and avoids interrupting the core series before its conclusion.

For viewers using the interleaved GateWorld order, follow that guide’s placement rather than improvising between individual episodes. For everyone else, watching the two films consecutively is easier to manage and preserves their role as post-series SG-1 stories. If you are watching Atlantis as one uninterrupted block, place both films after the SG-1 finale and before the point indicated for the third-season finale.

What each franchise entry is

Entry Format and date Role in a first watch
Stargate Feature film, 1994 Recommended starting point; establishes the Stargate and planetary travel
Stargate SG-1 Ten-season television series, 1997–2007 Main television continuation of the film
Stargate Atlantis Five-season spin-off, 2004–2009 Second major live-action series; watch after SG-1 begins, with the films placed before its season-three finale
Stargate Universe Two-season series, 2009–2011 Final stop in the original live-action route; follows a team aboard Destiny
Stargate: The Ark of Truth Direct-to-video sequel film, 2008 Continues SG-1 after its finale
Stargate: Continuum Direct-to-video film, 2008 Additional SG-1 story involving Ba’al and altered history
Stargate Origins Web series, 2018 Optional prequel set in 1939 and centered on young Catherine Langford
Stargate Infinity Animated series, 2002–2003; one season Optional animated extra, not part of the beginner route

The season counts help set expectations. SG-1 is the commitment-heavy centerpiece at ten seasons; Atlantis adds five seasons; and Universe adds two. The feature and direct-to-video films can be fitted around those larger blocks without turning the whole franchise into an episode-by-episode project.

Are Origins and Infinity required?

No. Stargate Origins is a 2018 web prequel set in 1939, and Stargate Infinity is an animated series from 2002–2003 with one season. Neither is needed to understand the film, SG-1, Atlantis or Universe.

The franchise overviews do not establish a comprehensive official canon ruling that settles every question about these two productions. It is more accurate to call them optional extras than to declare them definitively inside or outside canon. Watch Origins if an earlier Catherine Langford story interests you; sample Infinity only if you want to explore the animated side of the franchise.

Do not insert either title between the film and SG-1 merely because Origins is set earlier in the story world. A chronological setting is not the same as a useful introductory position. Save both until you know you want a completionist tour.

Do you have to follow the interleaved episode order?

No. The interleaved order is for precision, not comprehension. SG-1 and Atlantis overlap during their broadcast years, and GateWorld’s optimized list arranges episodes to reflect that overlap. It also keeps multi-part stories together, which matters more than forcing a switch after every single episode.

Use that guide if you enjoy tracking dates, cross-series references and broadcast chronology. Otherwise, the block order is less demanding: complete SG-1, move into Atlantis, insert the two films at the stated point, then finish Atlantis and watch Universe. You will not lose the main story by choosing the simpler path.

Where to watch the franchise

Streaming rights vary by country and can change without notice. GateWorld’s January 2026 streaming guide is specifically for viewers in the United States, so its availability information should not be generalized to other territories.

An Amazon MGM franchise page links named entries to Prime Video, but a link does not guarantee that a title is included with a subscription, available in every country or still present when you search. Before starting, search each title in the services available in your region and check whether the listing is included, rentable or purchasable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Costs can differ depending on that choice. A subscription may include some seasons while charging separately for a film; a rental can be cheaper for a one-off title; and purchasing a complete series may make sense if you expect to rewatch it. Because catalogs, rental terms and prices change, confirm the total cost at checkout rather than relying on an old listing.

If a season or film is missing from local streaming catalogs, physical editions can be practical for a ten-season series. Verify the exact edition, DVD or Blu-ray format, region compatibility, language options and current stock before buying. Availability and prices are not fixed facts, so do not rely on an old listing or assume that one collection contains every film. A complete SG-1 DVD search is the most natural ownership option, with Blu-ray collections and the two films as adjacent searches.

The status of a possible new series

An earlier Amazon announcement said a new Stargate series had been greenlit and named Martin Gero as writer and showrunner. A Space.com report dated June 3, 2026 later said Amazon MGM had canceled that project. Because those reports describe different points in time, treat the cancellation as later reporting and check for a current official announcement before planning your viewing around a new series.

That uncertainty does not change the beginner order for the released productions. The 1994 film, the three original live-action series and the two SG-1 films remain the relevant path for a first watch. Do not postpone starting the available shows while waiting for a project whose status may change.

Common first-watch mistakes

Starting with Universe

Universe is the newest of the original live-action series and is built around a team aboard Destiny. Starting there bypasses the film and the ten-season foundation that explains how the television franchise developed. Save it for last unless you are deliberately sampling the franchise out of production order.

Watching the films before finishing SG-1

Both direct-to-video films are tied to the completed SG-1 story. The useful rule is simple: finish the series, then watch The Ark of Truth, followed by Continuum.

Interleaving without a written list

Randomly alternating episodes can split a multi-part story or create unnecessary confusion. If you choose the continuity route, use GateWorld’s published optimized order and keep every connected story together.

Treating optional productions as prerequisites

Origins and Infinity add material, but they are not steps between the film, SG-1, Atlantis and Universe. Leaving them until after the main route keeps the beginning focused.

Assuming one service has everything

A franchise link or search result is not proof that every season is included in one subscription. Check each season and film separately, and note whether the title is included, rented or sold. This is especially important when a long series and its films are split across services.

A practical decision guide

  • You want the clearest path: use the film, SG-1, the first two Atlantis seasons, the two films, the remaining Atlantis seasons and then Universe.
  • You enjoy continuity puzzles: use GateWorld’s September 13, 2024 optimized order and follow its episode-level interleaving exactly.
  • You only want the core story: stop after Universe; the optional web and animated productions can wait.
  • You cannot find the 1994 film: begin with the available SG-1 listing, then return to the film when you can. The recommended starting point remains the film because it establishes the premise.
  • You are checking availability before committing: confirm every season and film in your local catalog, noting whether each title is included, rented or sold separately.
  • You want to own the long series: compare a complete-series DVD search with Blu-ray options, checking region, edition, stock and whether the films are separate releases.

Final recommendation

For almost every new viewer, use the simple route. The 1994 film supplies the premise, SG-1 supplies the franchise’s long-form foundation, Atlantis expands the setting, the two films close the SG-1 thread at the correct point, and Universe completes the original live-action run. Choose the interleaved order only when matching broadcast chronology is part of the fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to watch the 1994 Stargate movie before SG-1?

It is the cleanest starting point because it establishes the Stargate and planetary-travel premise, and SG-1 follows its events by one year. If the film is temporarily unavailable, you can begin SG-1 and return to the movie later.

What is the simplest Stargate watch order?

Watch Stargate (1994), all ten seasons of SG-1, Atlantis seasons 1 and 2, The Ark of Truth, Continuum, Atlantis seasons 3–5, and then both seasons of Universe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do The Ark of Truth and Continuum fit?

Watch both after the SG-1 finale. The recommended placement puts The Ark of Truth before the Atlantis season-three finale, followed by Continuum.

Do I have to interleave SG-1 and Atlantis episode by episode?

No. GateWorld’s optimized order is for viewers who want broadcast-era precision. A series-by-series route is easier and still preserves the main story.

Are Stargate Origins and Stargate Infinity required?

No. Origins is a 2018 web prequel set in 1939, and Infinity is a one-season animated series from 2002–2003. Treat both as optional extras.

Where can I stream Stargate?

Availability depends on territory and changes over time. Search each title on services in your country and confirm whether it is included, rentable or purchasable. A Prime Video link does not guarantee the same catalog or subscription treatment everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a new Stargate series currently available?

No released new series is part of this viewing route. An earlier announcement described a greenlit project, while a Space.com report dated June 3, 2026 said Amazon MGM canceled it. Check for a current official update before relying on either status.

The Bottom Line

Start with Stargate (1994), watch all ten seasons of SG-1, place The Ark of Truth and Continuum around the early part of Atlantis as outlined above, finish Atlantis, and end with Universe. Use GateWorld’s interleaved order only if detailed broadcast continuity is important to you; Origins and Infinity can wait.
