Start with Dragon Ball, continue with either the original Dragon Ball Z or the shorter Dragon Ball Z Kai, then watch Dragon Ball Super. The older Z-era movies are optional side stories, so watch them separately in release order instead of forcing every film between television episodes. This route follows Toei Animation’s series catalog and the chronological-versus-movie distinction used in Crunchyroll’s viewing guide.
The simplest Dragon Ball viewing order
For a first-time viewer, use this order:
- Dragon Ball (153 episodes, 1986).
- Dragon Ball Z (291 episodes, 1989) or Dragon Ball Z Kai (98 episodes, 2009).
- Dragon Ball Super (131 episodes, 2015).
That sequence introduces Goku as a child, follows the later story centered on Goku and his son Gohan, and then moves into the period after the threat of Majin Buu has passed. Those descriptions come from Toei Animation’s catalog. You do not need to insert the older Z movies into this television sequence: Crunchyroll’s guide treats their events separately from the chronological main story.

Think of this as the core story route, not a checklist of every franchise release. Toei’s catalog also includes Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball DAIMA, and multiple films, but a beginner does not have to stop after every entry to work out how it fits. The simple rule is: follow the television route first, then add the films and other series if you want more.

Why start with Dragon Ball instead of Dragon Ball Z?
Dragon Ball Z is designed as the later phase of Goku’s story. The original Dragon Ball establishes his childhood, friendships, rivalries and early adventures before the larger threats of Z. Watching Z first is possible, but it removes the introduction that gives many relationships and character changes their context.

Choose the complete story-first route
Watch all 153 episodes of Dragon Ball, then move to Z or Kai. This is the best option if you want the fullest character progression and do not mind a longer commitment.
Choose a faster entry
If you mainly want the Z-era story, begin with Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai. You can return to the original series later, but some early character history will be presented without its original buildup.
There is no need to treat one choice as a test of whether you are watching “correctly.” Starting with Dragon Ball gives you the intended earlier context; starting with Z gets you directly to the era named in this guide. Choose based on what you want from the first stretch: more background or a direct start with Z’s 291-episode series (or Kai’s 98-episode listing).

Both are television versions of the Z-era story, but Toei lists very different episode totals. The catalog does not quantify runtime savings or document every edit, so choose by viewing preference rather than by an assumed percentage reduction.
| Version | Toei catalog listing | Best for | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball Z | 291 episodes; dated 1989 | Viewers who want the original long-form broadcast version | Toei’s listed series identity and episode count |
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | 98 episodes; dated 2009 | Viewers who want a substantially shorter Z-era watch | Toei’s listed series identity and episode count; no precise runtime saving is stated |
| Kai: The Final Chapters | 69 episodes in the international version; 61 in the Japanese version | Viewers continuing the Kai presentation through its later material | Toei lists the two regional episode totals separately |
Pick the original Z when
- You want the 291-episode version Toei catalogs as the 1989 series.
- You prefer to experience the original television presentation rather than selecting the shorter cataloged version.
- You are comfortable with a much longer watch.
Pick Kai when
- You want the Z-era story represented by Toei’s 98-episode listing.
- You want to reduce the number of episodes before reaching Dragon Ball Super.
- You are happy to use the international or Japanese version of Kai: The Final Chapters according to the edition available in your region.
The episode totals are catalog figures, not an independently measured runtime comparison. They also do not, by themselves, establish that one version is artistically better.
One practical distinction is how a service labels the later Kai material. Toei lists Kai: The Final Chapters separately and gives different totals for its international and Japanese versions. If a listing seems to end before you expect, check the title page or season menu for that separate label before assuming you have found every episode. Episode numbering and packaging can differ by release, so use the specific edition’s own season information rather than comparing numbers across services without checking.
Where the movies fit
The older Z films are best treated as optional side-story entertainment. Toei’s catalog supplies their titles and release years, while Crunchyroll’s guide separates movie events identified as non-canon from its chronological main-story guide. Because the films do not all fit cleanly into the television continuity, a first-time viewer should finish the main series path before starting a movie run.
If you want the movies, use release order
Release order is the clearest reproducible method: it follows the dates in Toei’s catalog without pretending that every film has an exact episode placement. Some English-language editions use different translated titles, so match the title shown by the version you are watching.

Should you watch every older Z movie?
No. None is required to complete the main television route described above. Watch them if you enjoy alternate adventures, want a release-order marathon, or are exploring the franchise beyond its chronological series story. Skipping them will not prevent you from moving from Z or Kai to Dragon Ball Super.
The release-order table is useful precisely because it does not claim more than it can establish. Toei’s catalog provides release dates and titles; those facts let you create a repeatable movie marathon. They do not supply a dependable episode-by-episode location for every film. If a viewing list places a movie between particular episodes, treat that as a guide’s suggested arrangement rather than a rule required to understand the main series.
Where do Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ belong?
Toei lists Battle of Gods (2013) and Resurrection ‘F’ (2015) separately from the earlier Z-film run. They are also associated with the transition into the Dragon Ball Super era. For a clean first watch, complete Z or Kai, then watch Super; view these films as optional companion material rather than repeatedly interrupting the television order.

Toei also lists Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022) separately under Dragon Ball Super. Their catalog placement identifies them as Super-era films, but the simple recommendation remains the same: complete the core series route first, then explore those films as additions. This avoids making a first watch depend on a disputed or overly intricate placement chart.
A practical watch plan
- Decide whether context or speed matters more. Choose the full route, Dragon Ball → Z, or the shorter route, Dragon Ball → Kai.
- Keep one version of Z. Do not alternate between Z and Kai episode by episode. They are separate cataloged presentations, and switching makes episode numbering and continuity notes harder to follow.
- Finish the selected Z-era series. If you choose Kai, check whether your edition labels the later material as Kai: The Final Chapters and whether it uses the 69-episode international count or the 61-episode Japanese count.
- Continue to Dragon Ball Super. Toei catalogs 131 episodes for the 2015 series.
- Add films only after the core route. Use the release-order table above, beginning with the 1989 film and moving through the dated entries.
- Verify your edition before starting. Confirm subtitles, dubs, episode numbering and regional rights for the exact title you selected.
For a less confusing marathon, decide on your version and language before you begin. Write down the exact series title—Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai, or Kai: The Final Chapters—and check the service’s season or episode menu. If a title is split across multiple seasons or separate listings, verify which episodes are included. This small check can prevent accidentally changing versions halfway through because one catalog entry appeared to stop.
There is no need to calculate a watch schedule from episode totals alone. The catalog counts show that the options differ substantially in length, but they do not state episode runtime or quantify total hours. If time is your concern, the count is a useful comparison; if you need a precise schedule, check the runtime displayed by the edition or service you plan to use.
What about Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball DAIMA?
Toei’s catalog also lists Dragon Ball GT at 64 episodes (1996) and Dragon Ball DAIMA at 20 episodes (2024). The catalog establishes those series, dates and counts, but the evidence used for this guide does not establish a single required placement for them in the beginner route above. Treat them as additional franchise viewing after you have completed the core path, and follow the ordering or continuity notes supplied with the edition you choose.

How to find a legal stream in your country
Streaming rights, dubs, subtitles and episode availability vary by country and change over time. Toei’s announcement recorded a March 15, 2022 launch of all episodes of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT on Crunchyroll in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. That statement is historical and does not guarantee that the same catalog, language tracks or subscription terms are available today.
Toei’s announcement is useful as a dated record, not a universal streaming directory. It names four territories and the series included in that launch. It does not show current rights in other countries, prove that every listed title is still available, or establish what a current subscription includes. A separate Crunchyroll announcement in 2023 concerned 15 Dragon Ball franchise films, but that historical announcement likewise is not proof of today’s film catalog in a particular region.
Before subscribing or starting a marathon:
- Search the service’s catalog from your own country.
- Check the exact title: original Z, Kai, Dragon Ball Super and each film may have different rights.
- Open the audio and subtitle menu to confirm the language you need.
- Check whether the listing contains the complete season or only selected episodes.
- For physical media, verify the exact edition, episode range, subtitle and audio options; a catalog entry alone does not prove that a particular DVD collection is complete or currently available.
Check at the point you plan to watch, especially if you are choosing a service based on one specific series or film. A listing for Dragon Ball Z does not automatically mean that Kai, Super, or every movie is included. Confirm the country, the exact title, and the language options on the individual listing before paying for a subscription or buying a release.

Buying a DVD collection: what to check
A Dragon Ball Z DVD collection can be an option if you prefer owning physical media, but the series catalog is not a product listing. It does not verify a particular collection’s completeness, edition, audio or subtitle tracks, or current price and availability. Before buying, inspect the exact package details: confirm the episode range and whether all parts of the series are included, check which languages and subtitles are supplied, and make sure the edition is compatible with your player and region. Do not assume that a product described simply as a “complete collection” contains every version or related series.
That same caution applies when comparing a physical release with a stream. A service may list one version while a DVD set contains another; a product title alone may not make the difference clear. Match the exact series name to your plan, and check the episode information rather than relying on a broad franchise label. No specific DVD edition or current retailer listing is verified here, so treat the format as an option to investigate rather than a particular purchase recommendation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with a random movie
A movie can introduce characters or transformations without the television story that explains them. Start with the series path, then use the dated film list.
Trying to place every film between episodes
The available evidence does not provide a precise in-series position for each older film. Separating films from the main chronology avoids contradictory episode guides.

Mixing translated film names
Older releases may use alternate English titles. Compare the year and the version’s displayed title with Toei’s catalog list rather than assuming two differently translated names are separate films.
Assuming extra series are prerequisites
GT and DAIMA are franchise entries listed by Toei, but they are not required steps in the core path recommended here. Finish the beginner sequence first, then decide whether you want to add them.

Final recommendation
For most new viewers, watch Dragon Ball first, select Dragon Ball Z Kai if you want the shorter cataloged version or Dragon Ball Z if you want the 291-episode original, and then continue to Dragon Ball Super. Keep the older films optional and watch them in release order. This approach gives you a coherent television story while preserving the movies as an easy, separate marathon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I start watching Dragon Ball Z?
For the fullest context, start with Dragon Ball, then choose Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, and continue to Dragon Ball Super. If you want to jump straight to the Z era, you can begin with Z or Kai, but you will miss the earlier introduction to Goku and his relationships.
Should I watch Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z first?
Watch Dragon Ball first if you want the story in its earlier-to-later order and the character background that leads into Z. Starting with Z is also possible if you prefer a direct entry into that era. Toei lists the original Dragon Ball at 153 episodes and Dragon Ball Z at 291.
Dragon Ball Z or Kai—which should I choose?
Toei lists Dragon Ball Z at 291 episodes and Dragon Ball Z Kai at 98. Choose Z if you want the original long-form television presentation; choose Kai if you prefer the substantially shorter cataloged version. The episode counts do not establish an exact runtime saving or prove that one is artistically better.

Do I need to watch the Dragon Ball Z movies?
No. The older Z films are optional side stories and are not required for the core television route. If you want to watch them, use release order rather than trying to place every film between specific episodes.
What order should I watch the Dragon Ball movies in?
For a movie marathon, use the release years in the guide’s table: start with Get Back My Gohan (1989), continue through the 1990–1995 Z-film run, then the later films listed for 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2022. Toei’s catalog lists their dates; translated English titles may differ between editions.
Where do Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ fit?
Toei lists Battle of Gods (2013) and Resurrection ‘F’ (2015) separately from the earlier Z-film run, and they are associated with the transition into the Dragon Ball Super era. For a straightforward first watch, finish Z or Kai and continue to Super; treat these films as optional companion material.
Is Dragon Ball Kai the same as Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters?
Toei lists Dragon Ball Z Kai at 98 episodes and separately lists Kai: The Final Chapters, with 69 episodes for the international version and 61 for the Japanese version. Check the exact title and edition on your service or release to see how it labels the later material.
Where can I stream Dragon Ball Z right now?
Availability depends on your country, the exact title, and the date. Toei announced a Crunchyroll launch for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT on March 15, 2022 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, but that historical announcement does not guarantee current availability. Check your local catalog and verify the audio, subtitles, and episode range.
Should I watch Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball DAIMA before Super?
They are not required steps in the core route recommended here. Toei lists Dragon Ball GT (64 episodes, 1996) and Dragon Ball DAIMA (20 episodes, 2024), but those catalog facts do not establish a required placement for a beginner. Complete the core path first, then consult the ordering notes for the edition you choose.
The Bottom Line
Start with Dragon Ball, choose either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, then move on to Dragon Ball Super. Toei lists Z at 291 episodes and Kai at 98. The older films are optional; if you want them, watch them separately in release order. Check your local streaming catalog and the exact edition before you start.
