There is no single, continuity-wide reading order for James Bond comics. The best starting point depends on what you want: a modern original spy story, a comic adaptation of an Ian Fleming novel, or the historically important newspaper strips. Start with Vargr for a contemporary original comic, Casino Royale for a Fleming adaptation, or The Complete James Bond: Dr No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60 for the earliest collected strips.
Those choices lead into different bodies of work. Modern Dynamite-era books are original limited runs and graphic novels; Casino Royale and Live and Let Die retell Fleming novels; and the classic strips were serialized nationally from 1958 to 1984 before being collected in later volumes. You can therefore choose a route rather than attempt to force every Bond comic into one sequence.

| What you want | Start with | What it is | What to expect next |
|---|---|---|---|
| A modern, original comic story | Vargr | A Warren Ellis and Jason Masters arc from the Dynamite-era Bond line | Other independent modern runs by writers including Benjamin Percy, Greg Pak, Christos Gage, Rodney Barnes, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Garth Ennis |
| A comic version of Fleming’s fiction | Casino Royale | An adaptation credited to Van Jensen | Live and Let Die, another separately listed Fleming adaptation |
| The original newspaper-strip tradition | The Complete James Bond: Dr No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60 | A collection of the earliest identified strips, including several Fleming stories | Titan’s numbered omnibus volumes and later story-specific collections |
These are editorial entry points, not claims that one book is objectively superior. A modern original story does not require you to read a prior Bond comic, while an adaptation is most useful when you want to compare the comic’s choices with Fleming’s prose. The classic-strip route is the right choice if format history, serialized pacing and period artwork matter as much as plot.

Modern original Bond comics: begin with Vargr
Vargr is the clearest starting recommendation for readers who want a contemporary Bond comic rather than a retelling of a Fleming novel. Ian Fleming Publications’ library identifies it as a Dynamite-era title by Warren Ellis and Jason Masters. The recommendation is practical: it is an identified modern arc with its own creative team, not the first chapter of a single saga in which every later book must be read in order.
What “original” means in this line
Modern original stories use Bond as a comics character in new plots instead of adapting a named Fleming novel. That distinction matters when you are choosing a tone. The original books can reinterpret the agent, supporting cast and threats for a contemporary comics audience, whereas an adaptation has a pre-existing narrative to preserve. Neither format replaces the other, and the catalog does not establish one continuous sequence linking every modern title.
Where to go after Vargr
Follow the writer, artist or premise that interests you rather than assuming publication order is mandatory. The catalog lists Origin by Jeff Parker; Agent of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. by Christos Gage; Himeros by Rodney Barnes; Myrmidon and For King & Country by Phillip Kennedy Johnson; and Your Cold, Cold Heart by Garth Ennis. Those credits are useful discovery hooks, but they represent separate runs and approaches, not chapters in one shared authorial plan.

Fleming adaptations: read Casino Royale or Live and Let Die
If your goal is to see how Bond’s literary adventures translate into panels, choose one of the adaptations listed by Ian Fleming Publications. Casino Royale is adapted by Van Jensen. Live and Let Die is a separate adaptation route. These books should be kept distinct from the original Dynamite stories: they revisit novels rather than expanding a modern comics continuity.
Why an adaptation is a different starting experience
A novel adaptation gives you a fixed plot, characters and sequence of major events to compare against Fleming’s source. That makes it a good choice for a reader who already knows the novel, wants a visual introduction to it, or prefers a bounded story with an obvious beginning and end. It does not provide a reading order for the unrelated original runs, and reading both adaptations does not establish a required sequence between them.
How to use the adaptation route
- Pick the novel you want to revisit. Start with Casino Royale if that is the Fleming story you want in comic form; choose Live and Let Die if its setting and plot are the attraction.
- Read the comic as its own edition. Treat the adaptation as a complete interpretation rather than assuming scenes or emphasis will match the prose line for line.
- Only then branch into originals. Move to Vargr or another modern title if you want a new plot instead of another retelling.
Classic newspaper strips: start with Dr No
The newspaper-strip material is the historical route. Bond strips were serialized nationally from 1958 to 1984 and later collected in Titan volumes. For a chronological beginning, use The Complete James Bond: Dr No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60. The official library identifies this as the earliest strip collection and says it includes Dr. No, Diamonds Are Forever, Moonraker, Live and Let Die and From Russia, with Love.

A collection named for one story may contain several strips from the same period. The Dr No volume is therefore not just a single adaptation of Dr. No; its 1958–60 scope includes the other stories listed above. Choose it for its dated starting point and contents, not because the cover title promises an entire volume devoted to one plot.

Story-specific classic collections
Ian Fleming Publications lists several later collections that can be selected by story or period:
- James Bond: SPECTRE: Complete Comic Strip Collection (2015)
- The Complete James Bond: Dr No (2016)
- The Complete James Bond: Goldfinger (2017)
- The Complete James Bond: Octopussy (2017)
The catalog credits John McLusky and Yaroslav Horak as artists across these collections. Adaptation and strip-writing credits include Anthony Hern, Henry Gammidge, Peter O’Donnell and Jim Lawrence. A story-specific title is useful when you want one named adventure, but inspect the contents because the collection may include neighboring strips as well.
Titan’s six-volume omnibus route
Titan Books’ catalog lists The James Bond Omnibus volumes 1 through 6 as paperbacks and credits creators across the series. Volumes 1 and 2 emphasize Fleming’s early literary adventures adapted to strip form. The catalog describes volumes 3 and 4 as covering periods of Jim Lawrence’s strip-writing run. If you want a broad collected run rather than one named story, compare the contents of the six volumes and begin with the earliest available volume.

Writers and artists to follow
Creator credits are the most reliable way to navigate Bond comics once you have chosen a format. The modern catalog names Warren Ellis, Benjamin Percy, Greg Pak, Christos Gage, Rodney Barnes, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Garth Ennis among the writers. The listed titles show how varied the line is: Parker’s Origin, Gage’s Agent of S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Barnes’ Himeros, Johnson’s Myrmidon and For King & Country, and Ennis’ Your Cold, Cold Heart are separate entry points rather than one run shared by all those authors.

Modern comics credits
Vargr pairs Ellis with Jason Masters. For King & Country is credited to Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Giorgio Spalletta in its hardcover graphic-novel listing. Your Cold, Cold Heart is credited to Garth Ennis and Rapha Lobosco. Use those artist names when a visual style is more important to you than chronology.
Classic-strip credits
For the historical material, look for John McLusky and Yaroslav Horak as the principal artist names appearing across the collections. The strip adaptations and scripts are associated with Anthony Hern, Henry Gammidge, Peter O’Donnell and Jim Lawrence. Titan’s omnibus listings likewise credit Jim Lawrence, Horak and McLusky across later collections. These credits explain why the artwork and pacing change as you move through the newspaper years.

The catalog trail involves different roles. Ian Fleming Publications’ library is the rights-holder-side reference that separates modern Dynamite-era titles, Fleming adaptations and classic collections. Dynamite listings make the modern format distinction visible through collected editions such as the hardcover graphic novels. Titan Books publishes the classic-strip collections and the six-volume omnibus line in the catalog entries cited above.

Three practical reading plans
Plan A: contemporary original stories
- Begin with Vargr by Warren Ellis and Jason Masters.
- Choose your next book by creator or title: Parker’s Origin, Gage’s Agent of S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Barnes’ Himeros, Johnson’s Myrmidon or For King & Country, or Ennis’ Your Cold, Cold Heart.
- Record the edition and format as you collect, because a hardcover graphic novel and a later collected or digital edition may not present the same bibliographic details.
Plan B: Fleming in panels
- Start with Van Jensen’s adaptation of Casino Royale, or select Live and Let Die.
- Read the corresponding Fleming novel if you want a direct adaptation comparison.
- Switch to Vargr only when you want an original comics plot; do not expect the adaptation route to supply a sequel order.
Plan C: newspaper-strip history
- Start with The Complete James Bond: Dr No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60.
- Continue with a Titan omnibus, beginning at volume 1 when available, if you want a broad chronological run.
- Choose SPECTRE, Goldfinger or Octopussy collections when a specific story or character is your priority, checking the contents first.
Is there a single James Bond comic-book reading order?
No. The catalog evidence supports parallel routes rather than one mandatory order. Modern original stories, Fleming adaptations and newspaper strips differ in source material, publication era and collection scope. A reader can complete one route without reading the others, then use creator credits or story preference to branch out.
If you want the closest thing to a chronological order, use the dated classic-strip collections: begin with the 1958–60 Dr No collection and then move through the omnibus volumes by their numbered sequence and contents. That is a chronology for the newspaper material only; it does not place Vargr or the novel adaptations into the same timeline.
Availability and buying checks
Official publisher and rights-holder catalogs support physical graphic novels, collected strips and omnibus paperbacks as the main ways to read these runs. Before ordering, verify the territory, edition, binding, page count and stock status on the current listing. A title may be available in one market or format while another edition is out of print.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the exact contents. Story names on the cover do not guarantee that the book contains only that story.
- Check publication dates. The modern catalog date for Your Cold, Cold Heart is November 2024; older strip collections have 2015, 2016 and 2017 dates.
- Check used-book sources for unavailable volumes. The official FAQ advises looking at second-hand book collections and stores when a book is no longer in print.
- Check the edition type. Distinguish a single hardcover graphic novel from a multi-story paperback omnibus before comparing prices or shelf space.
A forthcoming classic-strip collection
Titan Comics lists Ian Fleming’s JAMES BOND Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol.1 as a 296-page hardcover graphic novel featuring the first seven full-length newspaper-strip adventures, with art by John McLusky. Its listed release date is 16 March 2027. As of 17 October 2026, that date is in the future, so it is a forthcoming option rather than a currently released starting volume. Re-check the listing before relying on the date or placing an order.
Quick Recap
How to decide in one minute
- Choose Vargr if you want a modern, original Bond plot and a self-contained creator-led arc.
- Choose Casino Royale if you want to see a Fleming novel adapted by Van Jensen; choose Live and Let Die for the other listed adaptation.
- Choose The Complete James Bond: Dr No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60 if you want the earliest newspaper-strip material and a historical reading experience.
- Choose a Titan omnibus if you want a larger classic-strip run, but compare each volume’s contents and date before selecting one.
