Where to Start Reading Dragon Ball Manga After Watching the Anime

If you finished the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime, begin with Dragon Ball chapter 1 (Vol. 1). The American “Dragon Ball Z” manga label is a publishing division of the same original manga, not a separate sequel that starts after the anime.

If you finished Dragon Ball Super, start the Super manga at chapter 1 for its complete version. If you only want material set after the anime’s Tournament of Power, reader discussions commonly point to about chapter 42, but that is an approximate chapter-level jump rather than a confirmed English collected-volume boundary.

Choose your starting point

Your best entry point depends on which anime you watched and whether you want the manga’s complete presentation or only material beyond the episodes.

What you watched Best starting point Why
Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball chapter 1 / Vol. 1 The U.S. split between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is a publishing label, not a separate manga continuity.
Dragon Ball Super; want the full manga Dragon Ball Super chapter 1 The manga has its own version of events and includes material that is not presented identically in the anime.

Where to start after the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime

Read from chapter 1 for the complete manga story

The original manga begins with young Goku, so chapter 1 is the reliable starting point for a first manga reading. It restores the story’s original pacing, panel composition and transitions instead of asking you to translate episodes into chapters. Starting at Vol. 1 also ensures that early setup, jokes, introductions and changes in emphasis are experienced in the order Akira Toriyama published them.

VIZ catalogs the original series as Dragon Ball and describes its American publication under both the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z names. In Japan, the manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995; the U.S. naming division was made for publication and marketing. Consequently, reaching a book labeled Dragon Ball Z does not mean you have switched to a new sequel manga. It is the later portion of the same original story.

How to handle the two U.S. labels

Begin with the volumes listed as Dragon Ball, then continue into the volumes VIZ labels Dragon Ball Z. Follow the publisher’s volume sequence rather than trying to stop at an anime season boundary. The labels help identify where a U.S. catalog divides the series, but they do not describe two independent starting points.

  • Complete reread: purchase or borrow Dragon Ball, Vol. 1 and continue through the Dragon Ball– and Dragon Ball Z-labeled volumes.
  • Single-edition approach: use the Dragon Ball Complete Box Set or Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set listed by VIZ, depending on which portion you need.
  • Digital approach: use the separate chapter catalogs VIZ maintains for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z; availability can differ by location.

Where to start after watching Dragon Ball Super

Chapter 1 is the safest choice

Dragon Ball Super is a separately cataloged manga credited to Akira Toriyama for story and Toyotarou for art. If you want to see how the manga constructs the Super story, begin at its chapter 1 rather than treating the anime as a panel-by-panel substitute.

The two versions should not be assumed to match scene for scene. The official Dragon Ball site’s report on the Japanese edition of Super Vol. 23 describes the Super Hero arc as depicting the film’s story while also containing a manga-exclusive addition. That is direct evidence that the manga can add or present material beyond what an anime-only viewer has seen. Reading from the beginning lets you notice those differences without relying on an episode-to-chapter conversion.

The approximate post-Tournament of Power jump

Readers who have completed the Super anime and want to move quickly to later material commonly identify approximately chapter 42 as the point after the Tournament of Power. Treat “approximately” as important: it is community guidance, not a publisher-confirmed instruction that every English edition begins a new collected volume at that exact chapter.

VIZ’s catalog lists Dragon Ball Super volumes, including Vol. 24, but the official listings inspected do not establish the exact English volume whose table of contents starts immediately after the anime’s Tournament of Power. Before buying a book for the jump, check the chapter list or preview for that edition. A chapter-level digital listing is less ambiguous than selecting a volume by number alone.

Full read or efficient continuation?

These are different goals, and neither requires pretending that one route is universally correct.

Choose the full read when you want context

  • You want the manga’s original pacing and page-to-page storytelling.
  • You want to identify differences between the anime and manga rather than assume the episodes are a complete adaptation.
  • You are new to the franchise’s printed format and do not know which scenes were rearranged, condensed or expanded.
  • You plan to own a complete set, making the initial chapter choice more important than saving a few hours.

Choose the chapter jump when you want speed

  • You have just finished the Super anime and only want material that follows the Tournament of Power.
  • You are comfortable returning to earlier chapters if a character, event or transition is unclear.
  • You will verify the contents of the digital chapter or print volume before paying for it.

The jump saves reading time, but it also skips the manga’s independent treatment of material you already watched. That trade-off is the reason chapter 1 remains the recommendation for a first complete reading.

How to make the post-anime jump without buying the wrong book

  1. Identify the series: confirm that the catalog says Dragon Ball Super, not the original Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z listing.
  2. Use the chapter number first: search the chapter catalog for approximately chapter 42, the community-identified post-Tournament of Power transition.
  3. Read the chapter synopsis or preview: make sure the opening pages and contents match the point at which you want to continue.
  4. Only then select a collected edition: use the table of contents to see whether the volume includes the chapter you need.
  5. Check your region: digital chapter access and free-chapter offers vary by location, so a listing visible in one country may not be available in another.

This process avoids treating an approximate chapter reference as an exact English volume recommendation.

Print, digital and box-set options

VIZ catalogs and collected books

VIZ lists Dragon Ball, Vol. 1, the Dragon Ball Complete Box Set, the Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set and collected Dragon Ball Super volumes. These are useful when you want a permanent library or prefer reading without a chapter-by-chapter interface. Stock, format and regional sales pages can change, so confirm that the edition contains the chapters you intend to read.

Chapter listings and regional access

VIZ maintains distinct chapter catalogs for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. Its chapter pages identify MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA as a partner for the latest free chapters available in a reader’s location. That statement is regional: it does not promise that every chapter, every back issue or every country has identical access.

If you are using a digital service to begin at chapter 1, confirm whether the service offers the complete back catalog or only selected free chapters. For a post-Tournament of Power jump, verify the exact chapter title and number before switching to print.

What if you watched only part of the anime?

You stopped during the original series

Start at chapter 1 if you want the manga’s complete version. If you remember a particular anime stopping point, you can use the relevant VIZ catalog to locate a nearby chapter, but an episode-to-chapter conversion is not necessary when the goal is a full read. The U.S. Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z naming split still applies.

You watched Super but skipped earlier Dragon Ball

You can begin Dragon Ball Super chapter 1, but that choice does not replace the original manga. The original series establishes Goku’s early story, while Super is a separate catalog that continues the broader Dragon Ball story. Readers who want the entire manga should read the original from chapter 1 before moving to Super.

You watched GT

The available official listings do not establish a manga continuation map from Dragon Ball GT. Do not present the first chapter of Dragon Ball Super as the direct manga chapter after GT; choose Super only if you specifically want that separately cataloged series.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with “Z” as though it were a sequel: the U.S. labels divide one original manga publication.
  • Assuming the anime and manga are identical: the Super Hero material demonstrates that the manga can include additions.
  • Treating chapter 42 as an exact volume boundary: the number is an approximate community transition point, not a confirmed English print-edition instruction.
  • Buying by cover title alone: inspect the catalog series and table of contents, especially when switching from digital chapters to collected books.
  • Assuming availability is worldwide: chapter access and free-reading offers depend on the reader’s location.

A practical reading plan

For a first-time manga reader

  1. Start with Dragon Ball chapter 1 or Vol. 1.
  2. Continue through the books VIZ labels Dragon Ball and then Dragon Ball Z.
  3. After finishing the original manga, begin Dragon Ball Super chapter 1.
  4. Use collected volumes or chapter catalogs according to your preferred format.

For an anime viewer who wants only new Super material

  1. Open the official Dragon Ball Super chapter catalog.
  2. Locate approximately chapter 42, the commonly cited post-Tournament of Power point.
  3. Read enough of the surrounding chapter content to confirm the transition.
  4. Check a print volume’s contents before purchasing it as the continuation point.

The first plan gives the most complete account of the manga. The second is efficient, but its chapter reference should remain approximate until you verify the edition you intend to read.
