There is no single best place to sell an old painting. First document the work and seek a suitable specialist’s view; then compare auction, dealer or gallery, and online marketplace options by likely net proceeds, time, buyer reach, fees, control, and handling. An auction estimate is an opinion, not a guaranteed selling price, and some venues or platforms may decline the work.
Prepare the painting before seeking a sale
Gather clear colour photographs of the front and back, frame, signature or maker’s mark, and any damage or repairs. Record the artist if known, medium, dimensions, how and when you acquired it, and any purchase, provenance, exhibition, restoration, or appraisal documents. Christie’s asks for images and descriptive and provenance information for an initial review; supporting authentication or appraisal paperwork is optional at that stage. Christie’s selling guidance

Specialists may consider the artist, origin, provenance, execution date, materials, dimensions, rarity, subject, condition, and comparable sales. Sotheby’s selling guidance Avoid cleaning or restoring the painting, removing its frame, or making firm attribution claims based only on a signature or family story before speaking with a qualified specialist. Christie’s explicitly says it does not authenticate artwork. Christie’s selling guidance
Which route fits your painting and priorities?
| Route | May fit when | Ask before agreeing | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auction house | The work fits the house’s category and consignment criteria, and you want specialist handling and exposure to auction bidders. | Will the house accept it? What are the estimate range, reserve, seller commission, other charges, insurance, shipping, sale date, and options if it goes unsold? | Competitive bidding can produce a strong result, but bidding determines the hammer price and the lot may not sell. Hammer price is before buyer’s premium and taxes; it is not the seller’s net payout. Christie’s selling guidance Christie’s buying guide Sotheby’s selling guidance |
| Art dealer or gallery | A dealer knows the artist, period, region, or type of painting and can explain the likely buyer market. | Is this an outright purchase or consignment? What is the net amount after commission and expenses, exclusivity period, insurance, expected time to sale, and return arrangement? | An outright offer may be simpler and faster. Consignment may put the work before the dealer’s clients, but the sale and timing remain uncertain. Terms vary by dealer. Seller proceeds depend partly on demand, how long you can wait, and intermediary fees. Artsy’s resale overview |
| Online marketplace | You can document and list the painting, respond to buyers, and arrange safe delivery, and the platform accepts both your seller account and this kind of secondary-market work. | Can a private owner list directly? What are the listing and sale fees, payment timing, shipping and insurance rules, return policy, taxes, and dispute process? | Online selling can offer broad reach and more control, but places more responsibility on you for the description, buyer questions, payment, packaging, shipping, and returns. Platform rules and seller eligibility apply; do not assume every owner or painting is accepted. Artsy selling information |
For auctions, an estimate is not a promise of what the work will sell for. Christie’s says its estimates are opinions and not predictions or guarantees; Sotheby’s describes estimates as non-binding and sets a reserve during consignment. Christie’s selling guidance Sotheby’s selling guidance

Compare likely net proceeds, not headline figures
Ask each house or dealer to show in writing how it calculates the amount you would receive. Include commission, insurance, photography or cataloguing charges, shipping, taxes or duties where applicable, and any fee triggered by a sale above an agreed estimate. Christie’s states that seller commission is calculated as a percentage of hammer price under agreed terms and that it may charge a 2% performance commission if an item exceeds its agreed high estimate. That is a Christie’s policy stated on its estimate page, not a universal auction rate; confirm the current terms for your consignment. Christie’s selling guidance
At auction, the hammer price is the winning bid before buyer charges. A buyer’s invoice may add buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, and shipping-related expenses; these are not the seller’s payout calculation. Request the seller-side terms separately. Christie’s buying guide No representative market-wide figure establishes which route produces the highest seller proceeds or the shortest time to sale, so compare actual written offers and terms rather than relying on a universal fee or speed claim.

How to find out what an old painting is worth
Ask an auction specialist or a dealer with relevant expertise for a sale-oriented view, providing the photographs and records you assembled. Treat that view as a preliminary estimate for a possible sales channel, not automatically as a formal appraisal for insurance, estate, donation, gift, or tax purposes. Sotheby’s distinguishes complimentary sale valuations from appraisals; its separate valuations department describes formal valuation work for purposes including taxation. Sotheby’s selling guidance Sotheby’s valuations
When considering comparable sales, look for works by the same artist and period where possible, and compare medium, dimensions, condition, provenance, and venue. Separate completed sale results from asking prices. The IRS notes that condition and the extent of restoration matter in valuing art and antiques, and cautions that an auction result can reflect unusual bidding circumstances. IRS Publication 561

When tax appraisal rules matter
In the United States, IRS Art Appraisal Services reviews claimed fair market values in tax-related cases and describes a statement-of-value procedure for certain claims. Its page says the procedure generally applies to art appraised at $50,000 or more; that is a tax-administration context, not a threshold for selling a painting. The same page states a user fee of $8,400 for one to three items and $800 for each additional item. These figures are the IRS page’s stated fees and threshold as accessed in 2026; check the page before relying on them. IRS Art Appraisal Services
IRS material does not determine an individual seller’s income-tax liability, and these procedures concern U.S. tax matters rather than every seller or jurisdiction. For a significant sale, inheritance, donation, or estate matter, consult a qualified tax professional and an appropriately qualified appraiser.
