For the most predictable visit, see Enola Gay at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, or Bockscar at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio. To see a B-29 that still flies, plan around Doc in Wichita, Kansas, or follow FIFI through the Commemorative Air Force’s changing tour schedule. Flying-aircraft locations, interior access, hours and prices can change, so confirm the operating organization’s calendar immediately before traveling.
Which surviving B-29 should you visit?
Your best choice depends on whether you value certainty, historic significance or the chance to see an airworthy aircraft. Enola Gay and Bockscar are permanent museum exhibits and therefore the simplest to plan around. Doc has a public hangar and visitor center in Wichita, but it closes when the airplane is touring or when private events occupy the facility. FIFI appears at selected events rather than remaining at one public display site.

The distinction between the two atomic-mission aircraft matters. Enola Gay dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Three days later, it served as the advance weather-reconnaissance aircraft for the Nagasaki mission; it did not drop that bomb. Bockscar was the B-29 that dropped the Nagasaki bomb.

Enola Gay at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
The Smithsonian displays Enola Gay at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The aircraft is the most predictable option for visitors who want to see one of the historically significant atomic-mission B-29s without arranging travel around an air show.

The center’s listed address is 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway, Chantilly, Virginia 20151. The Smithsonian currently lists free admission, no admission passes, $15 parking and hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except December 25. Those are the museum’s published details, not a guarantee for a future date; check the official visitor information before leaving.
Public transportation is available via Fairfax Connector bus 983 from the Silver Line’s Innovation Center station, although schedules vary. Use the museum’s directions page rather than relying blindly on a mapping application: the Smithsonian warns that some mapping tools may route drivers toward a closed security road.
Because this is a museum exhibit, the main uncertainty is a temporary closure, a display change or an unusual operating-day restriction—not whether the aircraft is on tour. Verify the center’s calendar if your trip depends on seeing the airplane on a particular day.
Bockscar at the National Museum of the United States Air Force
Bockscar is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio. It is the aircraft that carried out the Nagasaki bombing mission. The Smithsonian also identifies this museum as Bockscar’s display location.

The museum’s current visitor information should be your authority for the address, opening arrangements, security procedures and any access changes. Do not assume that hours, parking rules or exhibit access are identical to those at Udvar-Hazy. Check the Air Force museum’s own visitor page shortly before your visit, particularly if you are traveling from outside the Dayton area.
A visit to Bockscar and a visit to Enola Gay are not interchangeable historical experiences: each airplane is tied to a different mission, and accurate labels and interpretation are part of what makes the museum visit worthwhile.
Airworthy B-29s and where to find them
Doc in Wichita, Kansas
B-29 Doc is maintained by Doc’s Friends at a hangar, education facility and visitor center at Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita. The published facility description identifies a 42,000-square-foot hangar and visitor center. Wichita also has a direct historical connection to the type: Doc’s Friends says 1,644 B-29s were manufactured there during World War II.

Single admission is listed at $10, with an additional $5 for cockpit access. Family admission is listed at $20 for up to five people, with an additional $10 for cockpit access. These prices and hours are operator-published details that can change; confirm the current calendar and fees for your date.
The crucial planning warning is that the visitor center closes while Doc is on tour and may also close for private events. Check the online calendar and live hangar feed, or call before setting out. A normal winter opening pattern does not mean the airplane will be in the building on every listed day.
Doc also travels to air shows and other tour stops. The operator describes those appearances as opportunities to see the airplane close up, but aircraft presence, dates, admission arrangements and access vary by stop. Treat a tour announcement as a schedule to verify, not as a permanent location.

Those Dayton dates are past and do not establish a recurring itinerary. FIFI does not have a single permanent public-display address for trip planning. Check the Commemorative Air Force’s current tour schedule, then verify that the airplane will actually be present and determine what kind of interior access the particular event offers. Do not assume that access granted at one event will be available at the next stop.
How many B-29s still exist?
An older Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum FAQ reports that 30 B-29s still exist and 25 are in museums. The page does not show a publication date, so this should be read as the museum’s reported figure rather than a newly verified 2026 census. Airframes can move, be restored, enter storage or change display status, which is another reason not to treat the number as a live inventory.
The same FAQ says that 15 B-29s were built for atomic-bombing missions and that only Enola Gay and Bockscar still exist from that group. This is the Smithsonian’s historical count as presented on its FAQ, not the result of a newly published independent survey.

Plan your visit step by step
1. Decide whether you need a permanent exhibit
If your trip has fixed dates or you are traveling a long distance, start with Udvar-Hazy or the Air Force museum. A permanent display gives you a much better chance of seeing the aircraft without coordinating with an air-show itinerary. It still pays to check the museum calendar for temporary closures.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose Doc or FIFI when the flying-aircraft experience is central to your trip and you can adapt to a changing schedule. Their airworthy status is the attraction, but it also creates the possibility that the aircraft will be away, weather-grounded or available only during a defined event window.
2. Confirm the aircraft and date with the operator
For Udvar-Hazy, verify hours, parking, transit information and any special notices on the Smithsonian’s visitor pages. For Doc, check the calendar, live hangar feed and a same-day telephone confirmation if the journey is substantial. For FIFI, use the Commemorative Air Force’s current tour schedule and read the event’s access terms rather than relying on an old announcement or a third-party listing.
Record the exact date, opening time, parking arrangement and whether cockpit or interior access is included. Prices, schedules, tour locations and display status are volatile details; recheck them close to departure.
3. Build in a backup plan
A flying B-29 can leave a city earlier than expected or fail to appear because of maintenance, weather or an itinerary change. Keep a permanent museum option in mind if your route allows it, or plan another aviation exhibit near the event site. Do not buy nonrefundable travel on the assumption that a tour stop guarantees aircraft access.
4. Plan for the kind of access you actually want
Seeing the exterior, entering the fuselage and climbing into a cockpit are different experiences. The Wichita visitor page separately prices cockpit access for Doc. The cited FIFI event included interior exploration during event hours, but that permission should not be generalized to every appearance. Where a museum or operator has not explicitly promised interior access, plan for an exterior viewing only.
5. Allow time for interpretation, not just photographs
Read the aircraft’s mission history carefully. Enola Gay’s Hiroshima mission and its later weather-reconnaissance role for Nagasaki are distinct. Bockscar is the Nagasaki aircraft. Keeping those roles separate prevents the most common factual error in casual captions and travel coverage.
What can change before you arrive?
- Hours: seasonal schedules and special closures can override regular opening days.
- Aircraft location: Doc and FIFI may be away on tour, while museum aircraft can be temporarily moved or inaccessible.
- Access rules: cockpit or interior entry may be sold separately, limited by capacity or offered only during an event.
- Transportation: bus schedules change, and mapping software may direct drivers toward restricted roads at Udvar-Hazy.
- Prices: admission, parking and add-on fees are operator or museum listings, not fixed historical facts.
Checking the official source on the day or immediately before travel is the simplest protection against an expensive, avoidable disappointment.
