Where to Put Liquid Detergent in a Washing Machine

Put ordinary liquid laundry detergent in the washer’s main-wash detergent compartment, usually marked “II” or “Main Wash.” If the drawer has a removable liquid-detergent cup or insert, fit it before pouring. Do not assume that pods, capsule-like gels, prewash detergent, or automatic dispensers use the same location: check the markings and the manual for your exact model.

Find the compartment marked “II” or “Main Wash”

Most washing machines with a detergent drawer divide it into separate sections. The compartment marked “II” is normally for detergent released during the principal wash. Some manufacturers label it “Main Wash” instead. This is the section intended for liquid detergent when the machine is being used without a special automatic-dis dosing system.

Drawer layouts are not standardized. A front-loader may have the sections arranged from left to right, while a top-loader with a drawer can use a different order. Do not identify a compartment solely by its position. Read the embossed symbols on the drawer, the labels beside it, or the model’s instruction manual.

  • Main wash (“II” or “Main Wash”): the usual location for liquid detergent.
  • Prewash (often “I”): use only when a prewash option is selected and the manual calls for detergent there.
  • Fabric softener (often a flower symbol): not a detergent compartment; its liquid is released during the rinse stage.

If the markings are worn or difficult to read, remove the drawer and consult the manual by searching for the washer’s full model number. The same brand can use different drawer designs across product lines.

Use the liquid-detergent cup or insert when provided

Many drawers include a removable plastic cup that sits inside the main-wash section. Install it before adding liquid detergent. The cup controls how the liquid leaves the compartment and, on some machines, helps keep main-wash detergent from running out during a prewash phase.

LG support specifically instructs users to keep the liquid detergent cup in the main-wash compartment “to prevent the main wash detergent from being dispensed with a prewash detergent.” The cup’s shape, position and attachment differ by model, so do not force an insert into a drawer that was not designed for it.

When a cup is missing

A missing insert can change when detergent is released. Look up the washer’s parts diagram or manual and verify the exact model before buying a replacement. A universal insert is not established as compatible with every drawer. Match the replacement to the appliance model, and confirm whether the manufacturer treats the cup as an accessory or supplied part.

How to add liquid detergent correctly

  1. Check the detergent form. Confirm that the product is ordinary liquid detergent, not a pod, tablet, capsule-like gel or another product with separate placement instructions.
  2. Open the drawer. Locate the compartment marked “II” or “Main Wash.” Ignore its position until you have verified the marking.
  3. Fit the liquid cup. If the drawer has a removable cup or insert for liquid detergent, install it in the main-wash section.
  4. Measure according to the detergent label. Use the product’s dosing directions and any limits printed inside the drawer. Do not fill above the compartment’s maximum line.
  5. Pour into the main-wash section. Keep the liquid out of the prewash and fabric-softener sections unless the model’s instructions explicitly direct otherwise.
  6. Close the drawer fully. A partially open drawer can leave detergent behind or allow it to spill into the wrong part of the machine.
  7. Select the cycle. If you selected prewash, follow the washer manual’s separate directions before starting.

The correct amount depends on the detergent label, load, water conditions and the machine’s instructions. The compartment location and the dosage decision are separate questions; a correctly placed detergent can still cause residue or excess suds if overdosed.

What changes when you use prewash?

Prewash is the main exception to the simple “put liquid in the main compartment” rule. A prewash cycle uses a separate stage before the principal wash. If detergent intended for the main wash drains too early, it may be used during prewash instead.

Some washers are designed so that the liquid cup keeps the main-wash liquid in place until the main-wash stage. Others have different inserts or timing arrangements. Before combining liquid detergent with a prewash option, read the instructions for that exact washer. Use the prewash compartment only when the cycle and manual call for it.

If the manual specifies two detergents

Some machines may direct you to place a measured amount in the prewash section and another amount in the main-wash section. Follow that model-specific sequence rather than moving all liquid into one compartment. If the manual does not explain how liquid behaves with prewash, avoid guessing; use a cycle without prewash or obtain the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can liquid detergent go directly in the drum?

Do not treat direct-to-drum placement as a universal rule. The manufacturer guidance covered here places ordinary liquid detergent in the designated main-wash cup or compartment when one is provided. Drum placement depends on both the washer and the detergent form.

Samsung’s guidance for laundry pods, for example, says to put the pod directly in the empty tub before adding clothes rather than in the drawer. That instruction is specific to pods and should not be applied to standard liquid detergent. Beko guidance also distinguishes fluid gel from capsule-like gel and accounts for whether a liquid compartment exists.

Use direct placement only when the detergent label or the washer manual explicitly requires it. If a liquid product is supplied with a dosing ball or another container intended for the drum, follow that product’s directions and make sure they are compatible with your machine.

Liquid detergent, pods and capsule-like products compared

Product or system Usual location Important qualification
Ordinary liquid detergent Main-wash compartment marked “II” or “Main Wash” Fit the model’s liquid cup or insert when supplied.
Powder detergent Usually the compartment designated for the relevant wash stage Use the drawer markings and manual; a liquid insert may not be intended for powder.
Pods Often directly in the empty tub before clothes Samsung gives this instruction for pods; do not put them in the liquid drawer unless the product and manual say so.
Fluid gel Depends on the washer’s liquid compartment and the product instructions Beko distinguishes fluid gel from capsule-like gel.
Capsule-like gel Model- and product-specific; may be intended for the tub Follow the detergent packaging and washer manual rather than assuming it behaves like liquid.
Automatic dispenser The machine’s labeled reservoir Do not pour into a normal cycle drawer if the appliance is configured for automatic dosing.

Automatic dispensers need a different approach

Some washers store detergent in a larger reservoir and release it automatically over several cycles. The reservoir may be labeled for detergent, softener or another fluid, and the machine may require a setting that identifies the detergent type. In that arrangement, use the reservoir and controls described in the manual instead of treating the small drawer section as the primary dispenser.

Do not mix products in an automatic reservoir unless the manufacturer says they are compatible. If the machine has both a refillable reservoir and a conventional manual-dose compartment, the manual will explain which setting activates each path.

How to identify a confusing or unmarked drawer

  1. Look for symbols. “I” commonly identifies prewash, “II” identifies the main wash, and a flower commonly identifies fabric softener, but confirm these symbols in the manual.
  2. Check for a removable insert. A cup or flap inside one section often indicates that it is configured for liquid detergent.
  3. Read the drawer diagram. Many manuals show the drawer from above and label each compartment.
  4. Search by the complete model number. The model number, not just the brand name, is needed when drawer designs vary.
  5. Do not test by pouring detergent into several sections. Incorrect placement can release detergent at the wrong stage and leave residue.

If the manual and the drawer markings appear to conflict, stop and use the model-specific instructions or the manufacturer’s support channel. A replacement drawer from another model may fit physically while having different internal channels.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Liquid detergent in the fabric-softener compartment

Fabric-softener compartments are designed for release during rinsing, not the main wash. If detergent was added there, remove the drawer, rinse the compartment thoroughly and run the washer according to the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance before washing clothes.

Liquid detergent in the prewash section without selecting prewash

That detergent may remain in the compartment or be released at an unintended point. Use the main-wash section for a normal cycle, and reserve the prewash section for a selected prewash program.

Liquid detergent poured into a pod dispenser

A drawer or tray designed for pods may not meter liquid correctly. Empty and clean it, then use the compartment identified for liquid detergent or the machine’s automatic reservoir.

The drawer overflows

Check that the liquid cup is installed correctly, the detergent has not been filled above the maximum line and the drawer channels are clean. Excessive suds or a blocked channel can also cause leakage; use the detergent label and the washer manual for the appropriate remedy.

Detergent remains after the cycle

Confirm that the drawer is fully closed, the insert is seated and the inlet openings are not clogged. A low water flow, unsuitable detergent viscosity or a drawer meant for a different product can also leave residue. Clean the removable parts and consult the model instructions if the problem persists.

Cleaning the detergent drawer

Liquid residue can collect around the cup, siphon and drawer channels. Follow the washer manual’s removal instructions, take out detachable parts, rinse them and clear visible buildup without damaging seals or small siphon components. Drying the parts before reassembly can reduce diluted residue. Do not use a replacement insert or cleaning method that the manufacturer does not approve for the model.

Regular cleaning is especially important when switching between detergent types or when the drawer is used infrequently. A clean drawer makes the markings and maximum-fill lines easier to see, helping prevent placement and dosing errors.

A quick decision guide

  • Drawer with “II” or “Main Wash” and a liquid cup: install the cup and pour liquid detergent there.
  • Drawer with “II” but no visible cup: check the manual before assuming the compartment accepts liquid.
  • Prewash selected: read the model’s instructions for separating prewash and main-wash detergent.
  • Pods or capsule-like gel: follow the product-specific tub or drawer instruction; do not substitute ordinary-liquid guidance.
  • Automatic dosing system: fill the labeled reservoir and configure the dispenser as specified.
  • No clear markings: identify the full model number and obtain the manufacturer’s drawer diagram.

What the major manufacturer guidance has in common

Instructions from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Fisher & Paykel and Beko differ in drawer design, but they point to the same practical principle: use the location designated for the detergent form and wash stage on your specific machine. LG and Samsung describe a main-wash liquid cup or compartment for liquid detergent. Samsung separately directs pod users to the tub. Beko distinguishes several gel forms and whether a liquid compartment is present. These differences are why a brand-level rule is less reliable than the markings and manual for the washer in your home.

Before starting the next load

  • Verify the detergent is liquid rather than a pod, tablet or capsule-like product.
  • Locate “II” or “Main Wash.”
  • Install the supplied liquid cup or insert.
  • Keep prewash detergent separate unless the selected program and manual require it.
  • Keep fabric softener out of the detergent section.
  • Use the machine’s automatic reservoir when automatic dosing is enabled.
  • Check the exact model manual whenever the drawer layout, insert or detergent form is unclear.
