Where to Put an Indoor Air Quality Monitor for Useful Readings

For a useful picture of everyday indoor air, place your monitor in a room people regularly use—such as a bedroom or living room—at breathing height, with its airflow unobstructed. For a typical adult, that is roughly 3–6 feet above the floor. Keep it away from immediate pollutant sources, open windows, doors, HVAC vents, and air-cleaner airflow. Check the device manual, too: placement depends on what the monitor measures and how it is designed.

Where should I put my indoor air quality monitor?

Start by deciding what you want to learn. For a representative reading of a commonly occupied room, choose a spot near where people spend time, at breathing-zone height, and away from strong local influences. EPA describes the key question as: “What do I want to learn about air quality from this sensor?”

As a general siting guide, EPA recommends free airflow and warns against putting sensors behind furniture or in corners. See the EPA guide to siting and installing air sensors.

How high should an air quality monitor be?

Set it around 3–6 feet off the ground, near the breathing height of the people whose air you want to understand. The appropriate point within that range depends on whether occupants are usually sitting or standing. EPA’s AirNow 2023 fact sheet gives the same 3–6-foot recommendation for an air sensor; it is a placement recommendation, not a health threshold or a guarantee of accuracy. EPA/AirNow, “Where to Place an Air Sensor” (EPA-452/F-23-004, 2023).

What locations can make readings less representative?

  • Behind furniture, in a corner, or inside an enclosure: Restricted airflow can prevent the device from sampling room air properly. Leave its intake and outlet clear, and avoid placing it directly against a wall if that blocks airflow.
  • Beside a pollutant source: A spot right next to a stove, fireplace, cleaning products, or another immediate source may show a local concentration rather than typical conditions across the room.
  • By an open window, exterior door, or HVAC vent: Drafts and rapid changes in incoming air, temperature, or humidity can skew a reading away from ordinary room conditions.
  • In the path of an air cleaner: An air cleaner can remove pollutants nearby, so its intake or exhaust may not reflect the wider room. EPA recommends siting sensors away from pollution sinks such as air cleaners when seeking representative measurements.

These are not absolute bans. If you deliberately want to observe a source or a particular airflow, a nearby placement may answer that narrower question—but it should not be treated as a whole-room or whole-home reading.

Which room should I choose?

For a general household view, use a bedroom, living room, or other space where occupants spend substantial time. One room’s reading does not automatically describe the rest of the home, especially when rooms have different activities, ventilation, or pollutant sources.

What can the readings tell you?

A monitor only detects the pollutants or environmental factors its sensors are designed to measure. Depending on the device, these may include particulate matter, carbon dioxide, radon, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, temperature, or humidity; no single monitor should be assumed to measure all of them.

EPA cautions that low-cost monitors do not provide a complete representation of indoor air quality, and some provide limited information about indoor performance. A detected pollutant does not by itself establish that an indoor air problem exists, and readings alone cannot determine health impacts. For more on monitor capabilities and limitations, see EPA’s guidance on low-cost air pollution monitors and indoor air quality.

If readings or symptoms concern you, professional help may be appropriate in some cases; EPA also suggests discussing health symptoms with a healthcare provider.

Check the monitor’s instructions

Before settling on a location, confirm that the device is intended for indoor use and read its placement instructions. Sensor type, measured pollutant, airflow needs, and power requirements can affect where it belongs. EPA notes that accuracy can vary across manufacturers and even within a product line, and that price alone does not establish performance.
