Nintendo’s official material identifies Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 library and ties that library to the paid Expansion Pack. Nintendo’s Japanese product page identifies Ocarina of Time 3D as a 3DS-exclusive, single-player action-adventure. Those are different releases, not two names for the same port.

Requirements
- A Nintendo Switch-family console supported in your country.
- A Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier alone does not provide the N64 library.

Download and launch steps on Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Switch and sign in with the Nintendo Account that holds the Expansion Pack membership.
- Find the Nintendo 64 Classics application and choose the download option. Nintendo’s support instructions describe the library as a downloadable application rather than a separate Ocarina of Time purchase.
- Wait for the application to install, then start it from the HOME menu while the console is online if prompted.
- Select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from the Nintendo 64 catalogue.

Yes, Nintendo has announced that the N64 classic will return exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. The announcement was published by Nintendo Singapore on June 12, 2026 and uses the wording “The Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2!”
That announcement establishes a release window and platform, not a complete product specification. It does not state:

- whether the game will be included in Nintendo Switch Online, sold separately, or offered in another format;
- a price, preorder date or physical edition;
- whether existing Switch Nintendo 64 Classics access will carry over in a particular way.
Until Nintendo publishes those details, treat the 2026 Switch 2 version as announced rather than available for purchase. If you own a Switch 2 now, Nintendo’s support material also describes downloading Nintendo Classics on that system, but the announced exclusive return may be a distinct release from the currently documented library app.
Playing Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS
Ocarina of Time 3D is a separate Nintendo 3DS release rather than the N64 emulation included with Nintendo Switch Online. It is a single-player action-adventure designed for compatible 3DS hardware.
Release dates and edition details
Nintendo Japan’s product page lists the original release as June 16, 2011 and the digital release as November 1, 2011. Those dates come from the Japanese product listing; release timing and packaging in other regions may differ.

Why a new digital purchase is no longer possible
Nintendo ended new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023. Nintendo’s support FAQ says people who bought games previously can still redownload them for the foreseeable future, but the closure does not reopen the storefront for first-time buyers.

- Already purchased digitally: sign in to the Nintendo Account associated with the purchase and use the system’s redownload function while Nintendo continues to support it.
- Never purchased it: a new eShop transaction is not available. A used physical cartridge is the practical route, provided you have compatible 3DS hardware.

Select Ocarina of Time 3D when you have compatible 3DS hardware and specifically want that separate 3DS release. New buyers should plan around a physical cartridge because the digital storefront no longer accepts new purchases.

Choose N64 if original hardware is the priority
The original console and cartridge make sense for collectors, preservation-minded players and anyone who wants to use the period system. Budget for the condition of the hardware and cartridge rather than assuming a standard current price.
Wait for Switch 2 details if you want Nintendo’s announced new release
