Where to Play Magic: The Gathering Online and In Person (2026 Guide)

You can play Magic: The Gathering digitally on MTG Arena, Magic Online, or SpellTable, or play with physical cards at a local game store, an organized event, or a friend’s home. For in-person options, start with the Wizards Store and Event Locator: search your city or postal code, filter by format and date, and confirm the details with the store before you travel.

New players do not need to buy a collection before trying the game. A Magic Academy event supplies the materials for its introductory lessons, while Arena includes a tutorial. Other events have their own deck requirements, so the right choice depends on whether you want a guided lesson, competitive organized play, multiplayer Commander, remote tabletop play, or a no-cost digital starting point.

MTG Arena: the easiest digital starting point

MTG Arena is free to download on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. Its onboarding tutorial teaches the basic turn structure and card interactions before you have to build a competitive collection. After the tutorial, you can play regular matches, ranked play, and in-game events through the client.

Optional purchases are available, but Wizards says they are not required to access the full depth of gameplay. That makes Arena useful when you want to learn at your own pace or test the game before buying physical cards. You still need a compatible device, an internet connection, and a Wizards account for the service. Check the current getting-started page for supported operating-system versions before installing, especially on an older phone or tablet.

  1. Open the official Arena Getting Started page from the device you plan to use.
  2. Install the client or mobile app, create or sign in to your Wizards account, and complete the tutorial.
  3. Play the introductory matches before spending money. This reveals which colors, formats, and deck styles you enjoy.
  4. Use ranked play or an in-game event only after you understand the format’s deck rules; the client will normally flag cards or deck sizes that are illegal.

Arena is a digital card game rather than a camera view of a physical table. It automatically handles shuffling, life totals, timing rules, and triggers, which is helpful while learning. It also means that cards and formats available in the client are determined by Arena’s current implementation, not by every paper card ever printed.

Magic Online: a PC platform for long-established formats

Wizards presents Magic Online as its original digital platform and highlights formats such as Legacy and Modern. It is listed as available on PC. This is the option to investigate when your priority is a broad catalog of established constructed formats rather than a mobile-first tutorial experience.

The official material cited here does not provide a current pricing breakdown or detailed system requirements. Do not assume that an Arena installation, account balance, or purchase automatically carries over to Magic Online. Before committing time or money, check the current Magic Online service information for account, client, collection, and event details. If you only want to learn the rules, Arena’s guided tutorial is the clearer first step.

SpellTable: tabletop play over the internet

Wizards lists SpellTable as an option for playing tabletop Magic online. The distinction matters: you use real cards and a physical play area rather than an entirely simulated battlefield.

The official homepage does not establish the current camera requirements, supported browsers, account terms, or recommended lighting and mounting arrangement. Check the live service instructions before scheduling a game. In practice, every participant should agree on a camera angle that makes the battlefield and graveyards readable, decide how to handle hidden information, and test the connection before a competitive match. Those are preparation decisions, not published guarantees about SpellTable’s current features.

In-person places to play

Magic Academy: a structured first lesson

Magic Academy is designed for people who are new to Magic. Its Learn to Play session teaches the basic rules with simple decks. A separate Deck Building session explains how to assemble a first deck. Wizards says the required materials are provided, so you do not need to bring a personal collection or purchase a starter product to attend.

The Magic Academy FAQ estimates that an event takes approximately one to two hours, but the store may set a different schedule. Contact the host before arriving to confirm the start time, available seats, age or registration policy, and whether Learn to Play or Deck Building is on the calendar. Bring questions and a way to take notes; the value of the session is guided practice against another beginner or an instructor, not the size of the deck you own.

Prerelease: play the newest set at a local store

A Prerelease is a store event built around the newest Magic set. You register through a participating local game store and use a Prerelease Pack to build and play during the event. The official event hub is the place to identify the set’s event window and nearby listings, while the store supplies the current registration and cost information.

Prerelease is a limited-format experience: you work with the cards supplied for that event instead of bringing a prebuilt deck from home. Ask the store what time registration closes, when deck building begins, and whether capacity is limited. If you are attending your first Prerelease, tell the organizer; stores can explain the deck-building procedure and match structure before the first round.

Commander Party: multiplayer Commander

Commander Party events are organized multiplayer games using a Commander deck. You need a deck that follows the Commander format’s rules, so this is not the same preparation as Magic Academy or a sealed Prerelease. Confirm with the store whether loaner decks are available; the cited event information identifies the required format but does not promise lending.

Commander is social and normally involves several players at one table. Agree on expectations such as game length, power level, and any store-specific rules before the first game. If you are new to Commander, ask the event organizer to seat you with players who can explain the format rather than assuming every table uses the same style.

Standard Showdown and Store Championship

Both Standard Showdown and Store Championship are store events for Standard players. The event hub specifies a Standard-legal deck for each, so check the current Standard card pool and the store’s rules before registering. A deck that was legal for an older Standard season may no longer qualify.

For Store Championship, the event listing identifies tokens, counters, sleeves, and a playmat as optional accessories. They can make a match easier to manage, but they are not a substitute for a legal deck. Ask the store whether it requires a particular sleeve color, allows double-sleeving, or has a specific check-in time; those operational policies can vary by venue.

Casual games at home or with friends

Wizards also describes playing at home with friends. This is the least formal route: the group chooses a format, supplies decks, and decides how to resolve questions. It is a good way to practice after Arena or Magic Academy because nobody has to meet a tournament schedule.

The Magic Companion app can organize a home tournament for up to eight friends. For participating in-store events, the app can help players join limited and constructed events, track matches, and receive notifications when a round begins. A Wizards Account is required for in-store events in the app. You can therefore use a casual paper game without the app, but you need the account if your store uses Companion for event administration.

How to find a store or event near you

The Wizards Store and Event Locator is the most reliable starting point because schedules, formats, and fees are local. The locator supports searches by city, address, postal code, or region. Its filters can narrow results by event type, format, date, or date range, and a listing can show the store address, event date, start time, and possible entry fee.

  1. Enter a location broad enough to include nearby suburbs if your town has few results.
  2. Filter for the experience you want, such as Magic Academy, Prerelease, Commander, or Standard.
  3. Open each promising listing and record the store name, address, date, start time, format, and stated fee.
  4. Contact the store before traveling. Confirm that the event is still running, registration is open, seats remain, the fee is current, and the listed format or deck requirement has not changed.
  5. Ask about accessibility, parking, late registration, and whether first-time players should arrive early for account creation or deck checks.

The locator article published November 11, 2022 describes these search and detail features, but individual listings are maintained by stores. A blank search result does not prove that no players are nearby; try a wider radius, another date, or a direct call to a local game store that hosts Magic.

What to bring and what you may need

Play setting Deck or materials Useful preparation
Magic Academy Learn to Play or Deck Building Required lesson materials are provided Register if requested and confirm the one-to-two-hour schedule with the store
Prerelease Use the Prerelease Pack and the event’s limited deck-building rules Confirm registration time, capacity, and entry fee
Commander Party A Commander deck Ask about loaners and agree on table expectations
Standard Showdown or Store Championship A Standard-legal deck Bring legal sleeves and verify the current Standard card pool
Casual home game Whatever decks the group agrees to use Set the format, proxy policy, game length, and rules for ties in advance
In-store event using Magic Companion The deck or materials required by that event A Wizards Account and the Companion app if the store uses it for registration or match reporting

Physical accessories such as sleeves, a playmat, tokens, and counters are often convenient, but their necessity depends on the event. Do not buy them before asking the store what it supplies. Most importantly, do not infer that every event provides a deck: that is stated for Magic Academy, while Commander and the cited Standard events explicitly require format-appropriate decks.

Picking the right route for common situations

You have never played before

Choose Magic Academy if a nearby store lists a Learn to Play session. You receive an explanation, simple decks, and the materials needed to participate. If no session is scheduled soon, install Arena and complete its tutorial, then use the locator to watch for the next Academy event.

You want to avoid spending money while learning

Arena has a free download and optional purchases, so you can learn digitally without buying physical cards first. Magic Academy also supplies its lesson materials. For any other in-person event, ask the store what the entry fee and deck requirements are before registering.

You already own paper cards and want local competition

Search the locator by format and date. A Standard Showdown or Store Championship fits a Standard-legal deck; a Commander Party fits a Commander deck; and a Prerelease uses the event’s Prerelease Pack. Matching your collection to the listing prevents arriving with a deck that cannot be entered.

Your friends live far away but want to use paper cards

Investigate SpellTable and agree on a camera setup before the first game. If everyone is comfortable using digital cards instead, Arena removes the need to keep a physical battlefield visible. Use Magic Online when the group specifically wants its PC-based ecosystem and established formats such as Legacy or Modern.

What changed for Arena and stores in 2026

Wizards announced an October 1, 2026 rollout of Wizards Play Network-linked Arena features, including achievements tied to attending sanctioned in-person events and a Favorite Stores screen for store updates. The announcement is dated and feature behavior can change, so verify what is currently visible in Arena and on your store’s profile before relying on those features. It does not replace the Store and Event Locator for checking the basic date, venue, format, or fee of an event.

A practical first choice

For a completely new player, start with Magic Academy when a local store offers it, or use Arena’s tutorial when you want an immediate digital lesson. Once you know the rules, use the locator to choose between a Prerelease, Commander Party, Standard event, or casual night based on the deck you have and the experience you want. Confirm every local detail with the store, because registration, capacity, fees, and schedules belong to the individual venue.
