For direct control, a hardware wallet is stronger—but it makes you responsible for the keys, recovery phrase, backups and every transaction approval. Bitcoin is not stored inside either an app or a device; ownership in practice comes from control of the private keys that authorize spending. The right choice depends on which risks and responsibilities you can manage consistently.
What “keeping Bitcoin” actually means
The Bitcoin network records balances and transactions. A wallet—whether operated by an exchange or held on a hardware device—manages the private keys needed to authorize a transaction. The coins are not physically inside the exchange account, phone app or hardware wallet.

That distinction determines who can move the funds. In exchange custody, the exchange controls the keys and processes your withdrawal request. In self-custody, you control the keys and authorize transactions yourself. The hardware wallet is a security tool for self-custody, not a guarantee that your Bitcoin is safe regardless of how you use it.
Exchange custody: how it works
The exchange holds the keys
When Bitcoin remains in an exchange account, the provider generally holds the private keys in its own wallet infrastructure. Your account balance represents the provider’s obligation to let you trade or withdraw according to its rules. You do not sign a Bitcoin transaction directly with a key you control.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
This arrangement can be convenient: an online account is familiar, trading and fiat transfers are integrated, and you can often access it from multiple devices. The convenience comes with dependence on the provider’s security, solvency, operating systems and withdrawal policies.
What can interrupt access
Bitcoin.org summarizes the custody risk this way: “When a third party controls your keys, you rely entirely on their security and honesty, and history has shown that exchanges and online wallets can be hacked, fail, or freeze access to funds.” A security incident, service outage, account review, legal order or policy change can affect your ability to withdraw even when you can still sign in.
Protection is provider- and jurisdiction-specific. The available guidance does not establish that every exchange offers insurance, segregates customer assets, or provides the same treatment in insolvency. Before leaving a material balance on an exchange, read its custody, withdrawal, identity-verification and insolvency terms for your country. Do not assume that a familiar brand or a regulated status makes every loss scenario recoverable.

How to reduce exchange-custody risk
- Use a strong, unique password and enable the strongest multifactor-authentication option the service offers.
- Keep only the amount that needs to be online for trading or near-term spending; Bitcoin.org describes small everyday amounts in online or mobile wallets as a general practice.
- Use withdrawal allowlists, address confirmation and notification controls when available.
- Test a small withdrawal before transferring a larger amount, and retain the confirmation and transaction details.
- Review the provider’s withdrawal limits, processing rules, identity requirements and account-recovery process before you need them.
These steps improve account security, but they do not turn exchange custody into self-custody. The provider still controls the keys and can determine when a withdrawal is processed.
Hardware-wallet self-custody: how it works
You control the signing keys
A hardware wallet generates and stores private keys in a dedicated device and signs transactions without exposing those keys to the connected computer or phone. The device is normally kept offline except when you connect it to prepare and approve a transaction. This can reduce exposure to malware and other computer vulnerabilities compared with keeping signing keys in a general-purpose device.

Self-custody changes the dependency rather than eliminating it. You must protect the device, confirm what you are signing, keep the recovery information available, and maintain a backup that cannot be casually found or destroyed. Bitcoin.org puts the responsibility plainly: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.”
The recovery phrase is the critical backup
During setup, the wallet generates a recovery or seed phrase. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to restore the wallet and spend its Bitcoin. Treat it as the master secret: never photograph it, type it into a website, save it in cloud notes, email it, or share it with support staff.

If the device is lost or broken, a replacement device can generally restore the wallet when you have the correct recovery information and know the wallet’s restoration procedure. That is not a promise that every device, wallet configuration or recovery format is interchangeable. If the phrase is lost, damaged beyond reading, or recorded incorrectly, the funds may become permanently inaccessible.
Why a hardware wallet is not a complete safety system
The device cannot protect you from approving a fraudulent transaction, entering the recovery phrase into a phishing site, or sending Bitcoin to the wrong address. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. A hardware wallet can securely sign the transaction you authorized; it cannot reverse one you approved under deception.
Bitcoin.org recommends buying from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, generating the seed phrase yourself during first use, and never disclosing it to support staff. A sealed package or device PIN does not replace those checks.

Exchange custody vs. hardware-wallet self-custody
| Decision factor | Exchange custody | Hardware-wallet self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The exchange or custodian controls the keys and processes withdrawals. | You control the keys and authorize transactions. |
| Main dependency | Provider security, solvency, operations and withdrawal policies. | Your device, recovery phrase, backup plan and transaction practices. |
| Convenience | Online account access and integrated trading are convenient, subject to provider rules. | Requires device management and a recovery process; Bitcoin.org notes hardware wallets are less convenient for mobile use. |
| Failure scenario | A hack, outage, account restriction or provider failure can interrupt access; outcome depends on the provider’s terms and jurisdiction. | Device loss does not necessarily cause loss when a valid backup exists; without proper recovery information, restoration may fail. |
| Security work | Choose the service carefully, secure the account and understand withdrawal rules. | Protect the device and phrase, maintain a private backup and verify every transaction. |
| Irreversibility risk | A mistaken withdrawal is still irreversible once broadcast. | You review and approve the transaction directly, but a wrong or fraudulent approval remains irreversible. |
| Provider recovery | The provider may be able to reset account access under its policies; it can also freeze or limit withdrawals. | No provider can recreate private keys that you have permanently lost; restoration depends on your backup. |
Which option fits your situation?
An exchange may fit when access and simplicity are the priority
- You are learning and hold a small amount that you may trade or convert soon.
- You are not yet able to store a recovery phrase privately and maintain a tested backup.
- You need frequent trading or rapid access from several devices and accept dependence on the provider.
- You have read the provider’s withdrawal, account-recovery and insolvency terms for your jurisdiction.
Keeping Bitcoin on an exchange should be an informed custody decision, not an assumption that the provider will always be available. Use account-security controls and avoid treating an exchange balance as equivalent to keys you personally hold.
A hardware wallet may fit when control and reduced custodian dependence matter
- You intend to hold Bitcoin for a longer period rather than trade constantly.
- You can keep a recovery phrase private, durable and accessible to you but not to visitors, online attackers or unauthorized heirs.
- You are willing to check addresses and transaction details on the device before approving them.
- You can follow a repeatable backup and recovery plan and keep the device in a physically secure place.
Self-custody is unsuitable if you are likely to misplace the phrase, reveal it to a supposed support agent, or approve transactions without checking the destination. The responsibility is real even when the amount is small.
A split approach can match different needs
You do not have to choose one location for every satoshi. Some holders keep a limited, readily accessible amount with a carefully selected provider and use self-custody for funds they do not need online. The division should reflect your ability to secure each portion, not a promise that one method is risk-free.
How to move Bitcoin from an exchange to a hardware wallet
- Buy the device through a trusted channel. Follow the manufacturer’s current guidance or an authorized reseller. Avoid second-hand devices and unsolicited “setup” help.
- Initialize it yourself. Install the wallet software from the manufacturer’s official source, update the device as instructed, and let the device generate the recovery phrase. Do not accept a phrase supplied by a seller, website or support agent.
- Record the phrase offline. Write each word in the exact order shown, check it against the device’s verification prompt, and store the backup privately in a location protected from theft, fire, water and casual discovery. Do not create digital copies.
- Set and protect the device access controls. Choose a PIN or other device protection offered by the wallet, and keep the device separate from the recovery backup when practical.
- Install the correct Bitcoin account. Confirm that the wallet software and network are the intended Bitcoin network and that the receiving format is supported by your exchange.
- Display a receiving address on the device. Compare the address shown on the wallet’s trusted screen with the address shown in the companion software. Malware can alter an address displayed only on a computer.
- Send a small test amount. On the exchange, paste or scan the address, verify every character or the complete displayed address, review the network and fee, and submit a modest test withdrawal.
- Wait for confirmation. Check the transaction ID and confirm that the funds arrived at the intended wallet address before sending the remainder.
- Document the process without recording secrets. Keep non-sensitive information such as the wallet model, setup date and restoration instructions. Never store the recovery phrase in that document.
Exchange withdrawal fees, limits, confirmation requirements and address formats vary by provider and can change. Check the exact figures and rules shown at the time of withdrawal rather than relying on a general estimate.
How to use a hardware wallet safely
Before approving a transaction
- Open the wallet application from a trusted installation and connect the genuine device.
- Confirm the recipient address on the hardware wallet’s own screen, not only on the computer or phone.
- Check the amount, network, fee and any memo or destination tag required by the receiving service.
- Pause if the address changed unexpectedly, a website asks for your recovery phrase, or a person pressures you to approve quickly.
Protecting the recovery phrase
- Keep it offline and private; possession is effectively control of the wallet.
- Use a durable, legible record and a storage location protected against foreseeable physical damage.
- Consider how a trusted person would locate the backup after your death without exposing it during ordinary access. Do not disclose it to an unverified helper.
- Periodically verify that the backup is still readable, but do not enter the phrase into a device or website merely to “check” it unless you are performing a controlled restoration.
Recognizing support and recovery scams
Bitcoin.org states: “No legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” Treat any request for those words, a private key, a remote-access session or an urgent transfer as a scam signal. Contact support only through the wallet maker’s verified channel, and describe the problem without revealing secrets.

What happens when something goes wrong?
The exchange freezes withdrawals or becomes unavailable
You may be unable to move the Bitcoin until the provider restores service, completes a review or follows a legal process. Whether customers recover assets, and on what timetable, depends on the provider’s terms, records, jurisdiction and the nature of the failure. The general guidance available here does not establish a universal insurance or insolvency outcome. Keep your own transaction records and do not assume that a frozen account can be solved by changing a password.
You lose or break the hardware wallet
The device itself is replaceable only if you still have the correct recovery information and can restore the wallet using a compatible process. A device PIN is not the same as the recovery phrase. Do not discard the backup when replacing a device, and do not send the phrase to a technician.
You lose the recovery phrase
If no usable copy exists and the original device cannot authorize a transfer, the Bitcoin may be permanently inaccessible. There is no central authority that can reset a self-custodied private key. This is the central trade-off for removing the custodian.
You send to the wrong address
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. An exchange, wallet maker or miner generally cannot reverse a confirmed payment to an address you did not intend to use. Verify the full destination and send a test amount when appropriate.

Costs, requirements and practical limits
| Item | Exchange custody | Hardware-wallet self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Financial cost | Fees, spreads and withdrawal charges depend on the provider; no universal amount is established here. | Requires purchasing a hardware device plus network transaction fees; no universal device price is established here. |
| Technical requirement | A secure account, password and multifactor authentication. | A genuine device, compatible wallet software, recovery backup and the ability to verify transactions. |
| Operational burden | Account access, identity checks and provider rules. | Physical storage, backup maintenance, firmware or software procedures and personal recovery planning. |
| Mobile convenience | Usually high when the service supports mobile access, subject to its policies. | Lower than an online wallet for many mobile workflows; Bitcoin.org specifically describes hardware wallets as less convenient for mobile use. |
Because fees, limits and device prices change by provider, network conditions and region, check the current terms before acting. Do not let a low purchase price or a convenient interface substitute for a recovery and verification plan.
A decision checklist
Choose exchange custody only after you can answer “yes” to the account questions below:
- Do I understand who controls the keys and how withdrawals can be delayed or restricted?
- Have I reviewed the provider’s terms for my country, including account closure and insolvency language?
- Have I enabled strong multifactor authentication and secured the email account used for recovery?
- Am I keeping only an amount whose temporary loss of access I can tolerate?
Choose hardware-wallet self-custody only after you can answer “yes” to these questions:
- Can I keep a recovery phrase offline, private and readable for as long as I need the funds?
- Do I have a backup plan for device loss, physical damage and my own incapacity?
- Will I verify the complete address and transaction details on the device every time?
- Can I recognize that legitimate support will never ask for the phrase or private key?
If either list exposes a weakness, reduce the amount at risk while you build the missing process. The safest custody method is the one whose procedures you can follow reliably, not the one with the most impressive technical description.
Bottom line
Exchange custody trades direct control for convenience and dependence on a provider. Hardware-wallet self-custody trades that dependence for personal responsibility: you control the keys, but a lost recovery phrase, exposed backup or mistaken approval can be final. Keep only what you can secure, understand the provider or wallet process you are choosing, and treat address verification and recovery-phrase protection as non-negotiable parts of owning Bitcoin.
