Where to Install Two RAM Sticks on Your Motherboard

On many four-slot desktop motherboards, two RAM sticks go in A2 and B2—often the second and fourth sockets from the CPU. Check your exact motherboard’s manual before installing them: slot labels and the recommended pair can vary, and some boards specify A1 and B1 instead.

How to find the right slots for your motherboard

  1. Find the motherboard’s exact model name, then open its manual or official support page.

  2. Look for “memory configuration,” “DIMM population,” or a memory-installation diagram. The manual’s recommended two-module configuration takes precedence over general slot-counting advice.

  3. Install the sticks in the named sockets. If the manual says A2 and B2, use those labels on the board; the second-and-fourth-from-the-CPU layout is common, but not a substitute for checking the labels.

    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, MSI’s general installation guidance and ASUS’s support instructions recommend DIMMA2 and DIMMB2 for two modules in the configurations they describe. MSI’s memory installation instructions and ASUS’s DRAM installation guidance both direct users to consult the model-specific manual or support information.

Why A2 and B2 are common—and why they are not universal

Motherboards identify memory sockets by channel and socket number. A board might have Channel A sockets A1 and A2, and Channel B sockets B1 and B2. The recommended two-stick layout commonly puts one module in each channel, often in A2 and B2. An ASUS B85M-GAMER manual, for example, shows A2 and B2 in its two-module configuration and describes dual-channel mapping. See section 1.4.2, “Memory configurations,” in the ASUS B85M-GAMER User Guide.

There are model-specific exceptions. MSI’s general instructions recommend A2/B2, while a separate MSI FAQ describes a particular board case that calls for A1/B1. These are instructions for different situations, not a reason to assume one pair fits every motherboard. MSI’s A1/B1 FAQ illustrates why the exact board manual matters.

What if your motherboard has two RAM slots?

Use the two sockets and configuration specified in that board’s manual. A2/B2 refers to labels used on many four-slot boards; it does not literally apply to every motherboard.

Are adjacent slots the right choice?

Not necessarily. Do not choose sockets merely because they are next to each other. Follow the two-module population diagram for your board so the sticks occupy the intended channels and sockets.

Slot placement is separate from RAM compatibility

Correct placement does not guarantee that a memory kit is compatible. Check the motherboard’s model-specific support page and manual for supported memory type, capacity, and configurations; confirm processor support as well before buying modules. A generic kit should not be assumed to work with every board.

Does A2/B2 guarantee a particular speed increase?

The cited official installation sources explain recommended slot placement; they do not establish a benchmark or a universal performance percentage for using A2/B2 instead of another pair. Follow the board’s recommended configuration, but do not treat a specific speed gain as guaranteed by these instructions.
