Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Microsoft identifies the current release as version 4.6, published August 12, 2026. The download is hosted through Microsoft’s Sysinternals service and is the safest place to obtain the genuine utility.
NotMyFault intentionally crashes or hangs Windows and can create kernel memory leaks. Use it only on a disposable test machine or virtual machine, with administrator privileges and no unsaved work.
What NotMyFault is used for
Microsoft describes NotMyFault as a Windows utility for deliberately causing crashes, hangs and kernel memory leaks. Its purpose is educational and diagnostic: you can generate failures and blue-screen dump files while learning how device-driver and hardware problems appear during analysis.
Microsoft’s documentation says Windows Internals uses the utility in chapter 7 for pool-leak troubleshooting and in chapter 14 for crash-analysis examples. Mark Russinovich, the page’s author, summarizes it this way: “Notmyfault is a tool that you can use to crash, hang, and cause kernel memory leaks on your Windows system.”

Download NotMyFault from Microsoft
- Open Microsoft’s official NotMyFault download page.
- Check that the page identifies NotMyFault v4.6 and its August 12, 2026 publication date.
- Download the archive, then extract it before launching the appropriate executable.
- Run it with an administrator account. Windows may display a User Account Control prompt because the utility operates at kernel level.
The page lists the download size as 1.8 MB; Microsoft can change that file size in a later update.
Choose the access method that fits your test
| Access method | What Microsoft documents | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Official download | Version 4.6 archive from Microsoft’s NotMyFault page | Keeping a local copy for repeatable lab work |
| Sysinternals Live | Microsoft’s Sysinternals service can run tools from the web without a manual download | A quick test when you do not need a local archive |
| Graphical interface | Included GUI build for selecting documented crash, hang or leak actions | Interactive demonstrations and learning |
| Command line | Separate command-line version; Microsoft says it works on Nano Server | Automated or headless test environments |
The GUI and command-line builds expose the same general class of disruptive testing choices; neither should be treated as safe for production systems.
Protect the machine before running it
NotMyFault is designed to disrupt Windows, so prepare the environment before starting:
- Use a virtual machine or a dedicated test computer that can be rebuilt.
- Save and close all work on the test system.
- Take a VM snapshot or confirm that you have a tested recovery image.
- Disconnect production services and shared resources that could be affected by a crash or hang.
- Plan how you will collect the resulting dump file and restart or restore the machine.
Microsoft documents the tool’s disruptive effects but does not present a controlled-machine recommendation as a formal requirement. The precaution follows directly from the possibility of a crash, hang or kernel memory leak.

What versions and files are included
The v4.6 download includes 32-bit and 64-bit versions, along with a command-line version that works on Nano Server. Microsoft’s Sysinternals update history says the v4.6 release moved NotMyFault to Rust and introduced a modern user interface.
Match the executable to the architecture of the Windows test environment. If you are working on a server without a conventional desktop, use the command-line build documented for that scenario.

Microsoft’s command-line documentation lists these crash types:
- High-IRQL fault in kernel mode
- Buffer overflow
- Code overwrite
- Stack trash
- High-IRQL fault in user mode
- Stack overflow
- Hardcoded breakpoint
- Double free
It also lists hang types involving IRPs and DPCs. These labels describe deliberately induced failure conditions for analysis; they are not troubleshooting steps to try on a production installation. Use Microsoft’s page for the exact interface and option syntax rather than guessing command arguments.

What to expect after a test
A selected crash can produce a blue screen and a memory dump, while a hang may require a reset or restoration from a snapshot. A kernel memory-leak test can degrade the system before an obvious failure occurs. Give the test environment time to complete its configured behavior, then preserve any dump files and event data before restoring the machine.
If Windows does not restart normally, use the recovery method you prepared in advance: revert the virtual-machine snapshot, restore the test image or repair the disposable installation. Do not experiment with recovery procedures on a production host merely to run NotMyFault.
