If you have a Steam Frame accessory model but no 3D printer, use an on-demand manufacturing service: upload the CAD or mesh file, choose the available material and finish, review the quote, and have the part shipped. Form Now describes this workflow for US delivery, while Forge Labs accepts several common CAD and mesh formats and lists operations in the United States and Canada. Neither service’s cited information establishes Steam Frame-specific fit testing, so a successful upload is not proof that a part will fit, remain comfortable, or be safe on the headset or controllers.
Start with Valve’s official Steam Frame page for current device and first-party accessory information. Treat a custom print as an independently designed part that must be checked against the correct Steam Frame files, interface dimensions, clearances, and intended use.

What you need before ordering a Steam Frame print
A print service can manufacture a file, but it generally cannot determine whether an unverified accessory design is appropriate for Steam Frame. Gather these items first:

- The exact model file for the accessory, in a format accepted by your chosen service.
- The source of the geometry and any accompanying instructions, including the version or revision of the design.
- The intended location on the headset or controller and the purpose of the part, such as a mount, cover, spacer, cable guide, or ergonomic aid.
- Any required hardware, adhesive, strap, fastener, or insert that the printed part does not include.
- Measurements or reference drawings needed to check clearances before you pay for production.
Do not assume that a model labeled “Steam Frame” is official, current, or tested. Compare it with Valve’s published information and ask the designer what hardware and revision the model was made for.

Use the Steam Frame product page as the device reference
Valve’s official Steam Frame page identifies Steam Frame-compatible accessories and first-party kits. Valve says some of those first-party accessories are offered only to customers purchasing a Steam Frame during the add-to-cart process. Availability and purchasing conditions can change, so check the live store page rather than relying on an old listing. These kits are alternatives to custom manufacturing; their existence does not validate a third-party printed design.
Confirm the Steam Frame CAD license before commissioning a part
A Steam Hardware announcement search result states that Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are available for non-commercial use. The announcement page available at Steam Hardware announcements did not expose its complete text here, so verify the current license and the exact files before ordering. In particular, do not infer that commercial production, resale, redistribution of modified files, or use of electrical interface information is permitted.
If you intend to sell the finished accessory, sell a service based on the design, or publish a derivative model, obtain a clear reading of Valve’s current terms first. “Non-commercial use” should be treated as a meaningful restriction, not as a general permission to manufacture products for sale.

Valve’s Index extensibility page documents Valve Index resources, including high-resolution STEP files, low-resolution STL files, and dimensioned drawings. It also discusses sensor clearance and access to controller inputs and tells people who want to sell items made from Index resources to contact Valve. That guidance is specifically for Valve Index geometry and licensing. It can illustrate the kinds of checks a maker should perform, but it is not a Steam Frame license, dimension set, or compatibility guarantee.

The two cited services below describe an upload-and-order workflow. Their pages do not claim Steam Frame certification or testing, so use them as manufacturing channels rather than compatibility authorities.

Choose between them based on your file type, delivery country, the finish and material you need, the amount of design-for-manufacturing help you want, and the quote and delivery estimate for the actual model. A service accepting a file is not promising that the part’s wall thickness, clearances, orientation, or intended load are suitable.
How to order a custom Steam Frame accessory
- Identify the exact design. Record the file name, revision, units, and the Steam Frame component it is meant to attach to. If the designer supplies multiple versions, use the one matching your hardware revision.
- Read the usage terms. Keep a copy of the license or source notes. For Valve-provided CAD, confirm the current non-commercial terms and whether the specific file may be sent to a third-party manufacturer.
- Inspect the model before upload. Open it in a CAD or mesh viewer and check that it is a closed, watertight solid where required, is oriented correctly, and uses the intended units. Look for paper-thin walls, disconnected pieces, self-intersections, and missing holes or hardware clearances.
- Select a service that can receive the file. Form Now is a US-shipping option with material and finish selection. Forge Labs lists STEP, STL, IGES, OBJ, and 3MF support and serves US and Canadian locations. If you are elsewhere, confirm delivery eligibility before preparing a paid order.
- Upload the original file and supporting notes. Include drawings, screenshots, assembly instructions, and the hardware you will use. State which surfaces are cosmetic, which are functional, and where the part must remain clear of moving or sensing components.
- Request a manufacturability review. Ask the service to flag minimum feature sizes, unsupported overhangs, trapped powder or resin, warping risk, and any changes required for the selected process. Ask whether the quoted finish changes dimensions at mating surfaces.
- Specify the fit-critical requirements. Identify holes, snap features, sliding interfaces, and clamping surfaces. Ask what dimensional tolerance the service can hold for those features and whether a test coupon or inexpensive fit prototype is practical.
- Review the quote and delivery estimate. Compare the total price, shipping, taxes where applicable, material, finish, and any design or setup charges. The cited pages do not establish a universal price; the actual model and choices determine the quote.
- Approve production only after checking the preview. Confirm scale, orientation, quantity, color or finish, and the shipping address. Save the approved file and order details so you can identify the revision if a replacement is needed.
- Test the delivered part gradually. Inspect for cracks, sharp edges, residue, deformation, and incomplete features. Test attachment without forcing it, then check comfort, controls, cables, sensors, ventilation, and the ability to remove the accessory. Stop using it if it interferes with controls, blocks sensing areas, loosens during movement, or puts pressure on the headset.
Choosing material, finish, and tolerances
Material selection should follow the job of the accessory rather than appearance alone. Ask the service how the proposed material behaves under repeated flexing, heat, skin contact, friction, and the loads created by the attachment method. A rigid decorative cover has different requirements from a repeatedly flexed strap guide or a part that carries a mounted accessory.

Do not hide a fit problem by tightening a fastener or sanding blindly. If a part is too tight, identify which feature is out of tolerance; if it is loose, determine whether the model, the print process, or the underlying device measurement is responsible. A replacement revision is safer than forcing a stressed part onto the headset.
Fit and safety checks specific to a head-mounted device
Before attaching any custom piece, map every area it could affect. Check that it does not obstruct sensors, cameras, vents, adjustment mechanisms, buttons, controller inputs, charging or data connectors, or the user’s field of view. The relevant geometry must come from Steam Frame documentation or measurements, not from a Valve Index drawing.
- Clearance: Leave room for moving hinges, straps, cables, and adjustment travel.
- Contact: Avoid sharp edges and pressure points against the user’s face, head, or hands.
- Retention: Make sure the attachment cannot detach and become a hazard during normal movement.
- Heat and electrical separation: Keep printed material away from areas that become hot or from electrical contacts unless the design explicitly accounts for them.
- Serviceability: The accessory should not prevent battery, cable, lens, or other user-maintenance access.
- Reversibility: Prefer a design that can be removed without permanent modification to the Steam Frame.
These are checks you must validate on the real device. A manufacturing provider’s ability to print the geometry does not constitute a safety review.
When a service asks for a different file
STEP or another CAD format
A parametric CAD file can preserve editable surfaces and dimensions. If a service accepts it, provide the original format plus a neutral export when possible, and state the units. Ask the provider which file it will use for production and whether converting it changes threads, small holes, or curved surfaces.

STL, OBJ, or 3MF mesh
Mesh files describe surfaces as triangles. Check scale after export and inspect the mesh for holes, flipped normals, non-manifold edges, and separate shells that should be joined. A high-resolution mesh is not automatically more accurate if the underlying dimensions are wrong. Forge Labs specifically lists STEP, STL, IGES, OBJ, and 3MF among its accepted uploads; confirm current requirements before submitting.
A file the service cannot quote
Do not rename an unsupported file extension and assume it is converted. Export a format the service lists, include the original as reference, and ask whether the conversion preserves units and fit-critical dimensions. If the provider cannot verify the conversion, obtain a corrected export from the designer.

The upload succeeds but the part cannot be manufactured
Upload validation may only check whether the file can be read. Ask for a manufacturability review and correct thin walls, unsupported overhangs, intersecting bodies, or trapped cavities before paying for production.
The print arrives but does not fit
Compare the delivered part with the approved model and the measured device interface. If the printed dimensions differ, document the affected feature and ask the provider about process tolerance. If the model itself is wrong, request a revised design rather than modifying the headset.
The provider does not ship to you
Form Now states US-only delivery. Forge Labs lists US and Canadian locations. If neither serves your address, find a regional service that accepts the same file and provides equivalent manufacturability review; do not assume a forwarding address resolves warranty, tax, or return issues.
The finish is uncomfortable or interferes with controls
Stop using the accessory, remove residue or sharp support marks only if the design permits it, and ask for a finish or geometry revision. Replacing a cosmetic finish is preferable to altering a surface that controls alignment or retention.
Custom service versus printing at home
An on-demand service is the direct answer when you already have a model and no printer. It avoids buying and maintaining equipment, but you pay for production and shipping and must accept the provider’s material and process limits. Printing at home is a separate project: it requires a suitable printer, material, software, calibration, ventilation or workspace controls as appropriate to the technology, and the ability to inspect and iterate on parts. Filament or a printer is therefore not a substitute for locating a service when your immediate need is one custom accessory.
First-party accessories and availability
Before commissioning a duplicate, check whether Valve offers the function as an official Steam Frame accessory or kit on the live store page. Valve’s first-party options may have purchasing conditions tied to a Steam Frame order, and stock can change. An official accessory can reduce uncertainty about fit, but it does not make an unrelated custom design compatible.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the design explicitly for Steam Frame rather than Valve Index or another headset?
- Do you know the file revision, units, and license?
- Does the license permit sending the file to a manufacturer for your intended use?
- Does the service accept the file and deliver to your country?
- Have you identified fit-critical surfaces and requested tolerance guidance?
- Will the material and finish withstand the accessory’s real loads and contact conditions?
- Can you remove the part without permanent device modification?
- Have you planned an inspection and cautious fit test when it arrives?
If any answer is no, resolve that item before approving a paid order. The reliable path is a verified design, clear usage rights, a service that can manufacture and ship it, and a fit check performed on your own Steam Frame.
