Adobe Fonts: convenient when you already have Creative Cloud
Adobe Fonts is tied to Creative Cloud access rather than a one-time “free font” download. Adobe’s catalog and rights documentation explain that permissions depend on the applicable EULA and the use case. Check those terms before transferring editable files to a client or packaging a font inside software.
What to verify in a font license
Read the license before you use the typeface, not after a client asks for proof. The official SIL page identifies the SIL Open Font License v1.1, dated 26 February 2007; its conditions apply only when the particular font is distributed under that license.

- Logos and trademarks: Check whether lettering in a logo is allowed and whether modified font files have special requirements.
- Modification: Look for rules covering renamed or altered font files and any requirement to preserve notices.
- Embedding: Verify permissions for websites, PDFs, games, e-books and other embedded formats.
- Redistribution: Determine whether you may hand the font to a client, include it in an app, or bundle it with a template.
- Scope: Make sure the license covers every weight, style and file in the download; a family can contain files with different terms.
Save the license text, the original download archive and the source page address inside the project folder. That creates a simple record you can show during a client review or a later rights audit.
How to install and validate a downloaded font on a Mac
- Download from the directory or service. Keep the original archive untouched, along with the license file and the date you obtained it.
- Inspect the contents. Confirm the formats supplied (for example, OpenType or TrueType), remove duplicates, and read any read-me file before installation.
- Open Font Book. In Finder, double-click a font file, or open the Font Book app and choose the installation command. Review the family name, styles and source before confirming.
- Run validation. Use Font Book’s validation feature. Apple says Font Book lists problems it finds during validation so you can review them. Remove or replace files that fail rather than forcing them into a production project.
- Test in the target app. Restart an app that was open during installation, then check accented characters, numerals, bold and italic styles, and any variable-font controls you plan to use.
- Record the result. Store the installed family’s license and source with the project, especially if another person will edit or ship the work.
Choosing by file quality and workflow
License clarity is only one part of a practical choice. Compare the family’s available weights and styles, whether it includes variable-font files, the quality of language coverage and the formats needed by your destination. A family may look complete in a browser specimen but omit a weight or character set in the downloadable package.

For a logo, prioritize a license that clearly permits commercial trademark use and modification. For a website or app, confirm embedding terms and whether the supplied format works with your build pipeline.
