Find the Ancient Dragon at Dragon Shrine: travel through Aldia’s Keep to Dragon Aerie, cross the Aerie, then follow Dragon Shrine’s guarded route to the dragon. Speak with it to receive the Ashen Mist Heart; you do not have to fight it for that item. Defeat it only if you specifically want the Soul of a Giant it drops.

How to reach the Ancient Dragon

  1. Progress through Aldia’s Keep until you reach Dragon Aerie.
  2. Traverse Dragon Aerie to enter Dragon Shrine. The Shrine Entrance bonfire is on this route.
  3. Advance through Dragon Shrine’s guarded path and archway to reach the Ancient Dragon.

The route and location are described in this Dark Souls II walkthrough. Enemy placement may vary by edition; the available references do not establish edition-by-edition differences.

Talk to the dragon for the Ashen Mist Heart

Speak with the Ancient Dragon and it gives you the Ashen Mist Heart. If your goal is progression or access to memories, you can leave after the conversation; the Ancient Dragon is optional for obtaining this key item. The item reference also says the dragon drops the Ashen Mist Heart if you attack and kill it before speaking, but talking first avoids making the boss fight necessary.

Which giant soul are you looking for?

Dark Souls II has two similarly named items that are easy to confuse. The Dragon Shrine boss drops a Soul of a Giant; the separate Ancient Dragon Soul is found later in Dragon Memories.
