In Safari, the sidebar control depends on your device: on Mac, click the Sidebar button in the toolbar; on iPad, tap Show Sidebar. iPhone uses a different route for saved pages: open More > Bookmarks, or tap Show Bookmarks in the Top or Bottom tab layout.
Find the sidebar on a Mac
- Open Safari and look for the Sidebar button in the toolbar.
- Click the button to show the sidebar. Click it again to hide the sidebar.
- Choose Bookmarks or Reading List in the sidebar to open that section. To go straight to bookmarks, use the menu bar and choose Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks.
Apple’s Safari for Mac guide describes the toolbar control, and its Reading List guide says to click the Sidebar button, then Reading List.

Open the sidebar on an iPad
- In Safari, tap Show Sidebar.
- Choose Bookmarks or Reading List.
- If the section you want is not visible, tap Back at the top of the sidebar.

Use the bookmarks view on an iPhone
The cited iPhone instructions do not describe a Mac-style toolbar sidebar button. To reach saved pages instead:

- Bookmarks: Open a page you have saved as a bookmark.
- Reading List: Find pages saved to read later.
On Mac and iPad, these sections appear in Safari’s sidebar. On iPhone, use the bookmarks view described above.

If the control is missing
- On Mac: Check the Safari toolbar for the Sidebar button. If you need bookmarks, the menu bar route Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks is an alternative.
- On iPad: Look for Show Sidebar. If the section is not visible after opening it, tap Back at the top of the sidebar.
- On iPhone: Use More > Bookmarks, or Show Bookmarks with the Top or Bottom tab layout; the iPhone instructions do not identify a Mac-style sidebar button.
Safari’s controls vary by device, and toolbar customization or older operating-system versions may affect what you see. Apple’s cited guidance covers current interfaces; it does not establish the exact layout for every older version or customized toolbar.
