The announcement supplies readable context; the paper shows exactly what fossil material was preserved, which methods were used, what comparisons were made, and which conclusions remain uncertain.
No single museum feed is a complete worldwide register of new dinosaurs. Treat each report as a signpost to primary evidence, not as a substitute for the study itself.

Start with an institutional report you can date and identify
A natural-history museum or university involved in a discovery has reason to explain the specimen, name the scientists, and point readers toward the formal publication. That makes an institutional report a useful first filter, especially when a technical paper is difficult to read.

Check the date and the people involved
Record the publication date, the institution, and the researchers named in the article. A current-looking page can describe an older discovery, while a later update may discuss a different stage of the work. Confirm that the article identifies where the fossil came from, who studied it, and whether the institution participated in the excavation or analysis.

Use an index as a discovery aid, not a census
The Natural History Museum’s dated new-species index is useful for finding announcements, but it is not a comprehensive global register. Important descriptions may first appear through a university, a regional museum, or a journal and never be listed there. An index can help you locate a story; it cannot establish that you have found every new dinosaur described in a given year.
Follow the announcement to the peer-reviewed paper
Look for the journal name, paper title, authors, and a direct reference to the formal description. Then read the abstract, figures, methods, and discussion rather than relying only on the headline.
What the paper can confirm
- Which bones, teeth, impressions, or other traces were actually recovered.
- Whether the specimen is complete, crushed, or missing important regions.
- How the authors assigned it to a group or proposed a new species.
- Which measurements, scans, histology, or statistical analyses support the identification.
- How the specimen compares with related fossils and living animals.
- What alternative explanations the authors considered and what uncertainty remains.
The Natural History Museum reports on the Antarctic titanosaur, the South Korean thescelosaurid, and Comptonatus chasei identify the papers or journals behind their accounts. The Field Museum’s report on Jian changmaensis points to a study in the Annals of Carnegie Museum. Those links matter because they let you test whether a public-facing claim accurately reflects the formal evidence.

Do not confuse a name with a settled evolutionary story
A species name is one claim; its position on the dinosaur family tree is another. A paper may provide enough anatomical evidence to distinguish a specimen from known species while leaving its broader relationships provisional. Later discoveries can change the arrangement of branches without invalidating the original observation that the bones differ in a consistent way.
Separate what was observed from what was inferred
Reliable reading keeps physical evidence and interpretation in separate columns. A preserved bone is an observation. Calling the animal a particular species, reconstructing its behavior, or placing it in a precise evolutionary position is an interpretation built from that observation.

Material can support a group-level identification without proving a species
The Natural History Museum’s South Korean account illustrates the distinction. Micro-CT scanning revealed skull elements preserved inside rock, providing anatomical information that ordinary preparation could not expose. That evidence can support assignment to a dinosaur group. It does not automatically prove every detail of a species diagnosis, especially when the specimen is young or incomplete.
Footprints create a related problem. Tracks can demonstrate that dinosaurs lived in an area and can reveal differences in size, gait, or track shape. They usually cannot identify the exact species that made them. As professor and dinosaur expert Paul Barrett explained in the South Korea coverage: “When we look at those track makers, we can’t really name the exact species, but we do see that there are a lot of different types of dinosaurs.”
Behavioral reconstructions require extra steps
Claims about feathers, flight, gliding, diet, or hunting are usually inferences from anatomy, sediment, biomechanics, or comparisons with living animals. They should be presented as interpretations, not as if the fossil directly recorded behavior.
Evaluate preservation, methods, and comparisons
When two accounts disagree, compare them on the same evidence rather than counting headlines or quotations.
1. Preservation and completeness
Ask which parts of the skeleton survived and whether they are articulated, distorted, or represented by isolated fragments. A nearly complete skeleton can reveal proportions and multiple diagnostic features. A fragment can still be important, but its identification may depend on a smaller set of characters and carry greater uncertainty.

2. Anatomical or microscopic evidence
Read what structure was measured. CT or micro-CT can reveal bones hidden in matrix and show internal anatomy without destroying the specimen. Microscopic bone structure can provide information about growth, age, or tissue organization. Neither method is a magic label: the result depends on scan quality, sampling, preparation, and comparison with appropriate specimens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Comparative sample
A conclusion is stronger when authors compare the fossil with a broad, relevant sample rather than a single convenient example. Check whether comparisons include close relatives, specimens of different ages, and animals from the same geological interval when those data exist.
4. Analytical method
Look for a stated character matrix, statistical test, growth series, imaging protocol, or other reproducible method. A report that says researchers used CT or histology is a starting point; the paper should explain what was scanned or sectioned, how features were coded, and how the result affected the conclusion.
5. Independent agreement
Confidence increases when separate evidence points the same way: external anatomy agrees with internal structure, several bones share the diagnostic pattern, or a new analysis reaches a similar result. One striking feature can be informative, but it should not carry a claim that requires many lines of evidence.
What recent examples teach readers
Antarctic titanosaur
The Natural History Museum reported what it presented as the first dinosaur fossil found on Antarctica as a titanosaur and identified a paper in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. The announcement discusses CT data and the researchers’ interpretation of relationships among relatives that lived on Gondwana. Read the paper before treating the find as a complete species-level picture: a fragmentary fossil can establish that a titanosaur was present without preserving every feature needed for a full reconstruction.

South Korean thescelosaurid
A March 2026 Natural History Museum account describes the first dinosaur skull elements found in South Korea and reports micro-CT work that exposed those elements within the surrounding rock. The animal was estimated to have been about two years old at death. The institution also described it as only the third named dinosaur species discovered in South Korea. Those figures belong to that report and should not be generalized into a global measure of dinosaur discovery.
The same account explains why regional footprints do not necessarily identify exact species. Use the skull evidence to evaluate the named specimen and treat the track record as separate evidence for dinosaur diversity and presence.
Comptonatus chasei
In a report dated 10 July 2024, the Natural History Museum linked Comptonatus chasei to a paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. Lead author Jeremy Lockwood, a researcher at the Natural History Museum and the University of Portsmouth, described almost 150 bones. Anatomical differences in that material informed the species distinction.
The report also states that the available evidence does not yet establish how the iguanodontians of the Isle of Wight evolved or exactly how they were related. That limitation is part of the result, not a flaw to hide. A well-supported species description can coexist with an unresolved evolutionary history.
Jian changmaensis
The Field Museum’s account connects a fragmentary specimen to a study in the Annals of Carnegie Museum. Start with the observed arm and shoulder bones, then examine how the authors move from those bones to interpretations about feathers, gliding, and predation.
Best Value
Senior author Jingmai O’Connor summarized the behavioral inference this way: “Jian and the other microraptors probably weren’t capable of true, powered flight, but they could probably glide like a flying squirrel.” The wording signals an interpretation based on anatomy and comparison, not a directly preserved action. Read the paper to see which features support the proposed gliding ability and where the specimen’s fragmentary condition limits confidence.
Nanotyrannus and contested interpretations
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County describes an analysis that used microscopic hyoid-bone structure and comparisons with living and extinct reptiles and dinosaurs to evaluate a contested interpretation of Nanotyrannus. This is a useful model for reading disagreement: identify the tissue examined, the comparative growth series, and the authors’ stated conclusion. Present that conclusion as the result of that paper and its authors, not as proof that future studies cannot revise the debate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workflow for checking a dinosaur discovery
- Capture the original date. Save the date, institution, authors, specimen locality, and the exact name used in the announcement.
- Locate the formal publication. Note the journal, paper title, and authors. If the announcement does not identify a paper, treat it as preliminary context rather than a complete scientific account.
- Inventory the fossil. Write down which bones or traces are present, how complete they are, whether they are distorted, and whether scans revealed hidden structures.
- Mark each claim as observation or inference. For example, a skull element visible in a scan is an observation; a conclusion about diet or flight is an inference.
- Inspect the method. Check for CT or micro-CT procedures, histology, measurements, phylogenetic analysis, or other stated techniques.
- Inspect the comparison set. Ask which related fossils, age groups, and living analogues were included and whether the comparison is broad enough for the claim.
- Read the limitations. Record missing bones, uncertain dating, unresolved relationships, and alternative interpretations instead of repeating only the headline.
- Compare independent accounts carefully. Use the same axes—preservation, anatomy, method, comparison, and agreement—when evaluating competing interpretations.
- Update your notes when a new paper appears. A later study may add material, re-score characters, or reinterpret an earlier specimen without erasing what was originally observed.
How much weight to give each source
| Source | Best use | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Museum or university announcement | Readable context, dates, named researchers, specimen setting, and a route to the paper | That every headline claim is supported or that the interpretation is settled |
| Peer-reviewed paper | Specimen inventory, methods, comparisons, formal diagnosis, analyses, and stated limitations | That later studies will agree or that a proposed family-tree position is permanent |
| Specialist commentary | Explanation of why a method or disagreement matters | Replacement for examining the underlying specimen data and paper |
| Dated discovery index | Finding institutional announcements across time | A complete worldwide list of newly described animals |
| Social posts, headlines, or unsourced summaries | Clues about a story worth checking | Reliable evidence of identity, age, behavior, or evolutionary relationships |
Warning signs that call for caution
- A headline names a species, but the article never says which bones were found.
- A footprint is treated as proof of an exact species without a matching skeleton.
- A fragmentary specimen is described as if it were a complete animal.
- A behavioral claim appears without anatomical, sedimentary, or biomechanical reasoning.
- The report names a technique but gives no indication what it revealed or how it was validated.
- An evolutionary diagram is presented without explaining the characters or comparative sample behind it.
- Uncertainty in the formal paper disappears from the public summary.
- A single institution’s index is described as a complete record of global discoveries.
How to read a new report without losing the uncertainty
Use the announcement to orient yourself, then let the paper determine the strength of each statement. Phrase conclusions at the level the evidence supports: a specimen may be securely assigned to a broad group while its species status, age, behavior, or family-tree position remains debated. Keep the publication date attached to time-sensitive claims, especially when a later study could add evidence.
