Where to Find Reliable Company Financial Results and Filings

For a U.S. public company, start with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s EDGAR database. It is the free, official record of the company’s filings. Use the issuer’s investor-relations (IR) website as a convenient second stop for earnings releases, annual-report PDFs, webcasts, fact sheets and spreadsheets, then verify important figures in the filing itself.

Match the document to your question: a 10-K covers the full fiscal year, a 10-Q covers a quarter, and an 8-K reports significant events between periodic reports. Always record the form, reporting period, filing date and whether an amended version exists. A filing is a regulated disclosure prepared by the company—not an endorsement or accuracy guarantee from the SEC.

Start with EDGAR, then use the company’s IR page

EDGAR is the central source for U.S.-listed companies that file under SEC reporting rules. Search by the company’s legal name or stock ticker and open its filing history. Results are arranged chronologically and identify each submission by form type, so you can see both the latest report and the sequence of earlier disclosures.

The investor-relations page is useful when you want a readable earnings announcement, presentation or webcast quickly. Companies often group quarterly releases, annual reports, fact sheets, downloadable spreadsheets and links to SEC filings in one place. Treat those materials as navigation and context; confirm material values, definitions and footnotes in the filed document.

What to record when you find a document

  • Form: 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K or another filing type.
  • Reporting period: the fiscal year, quarter or event date covered.
  • Filing date: when the company submitted the document.
  • Amendment status: a suffix such as /A indicates an amended filing.
  • Scope: whether the document contains complete statements, selected metrics or only an event notice.

These details prevent a common mistake: comparing a newly issued earnings release with an older quarter, or treating an amended filing as if it were the original version.

Choose the right SEC form

Form When it is filed What it normally contains Best use
10-K Once for each fiscal year Audited annual financial statements, notes, business description, risk factors and annual MD&A Understanding the company’s full-year performance, financial position, risks and accounting policies
10-Q For quarterly reporting periods Unaudited interim financial statements, notes, updated risks and quarterly MD&A Checking the latest complete quarter and changes since the annual report
8-K When a reportable material event occurs between periodic reports Event-specific disclosure, exhibits and, often, an earnings release Finding a current announcement before the next 10-K or 10-Q

10-K: the annual record

A 10-K is the document to read for a company’s complete fiscal-year story. The Business section explains what the company does, its markets and operating structure. Risk Factors identifies significant risks management considers material. Management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) explains results, liquidity, capital resources and known trends. The financial statements and notes provide the reported numbers and the accounting explanations behind them.

Annual statements in a 10-K are audited, but “audited” does not mean every forecast or management assertion is guaranteed. Read the auditor’s report, accounting policies, commitments, contingencies and segment information alongside the headline totals.

10-Q: the interim update

A 10-Q gives a more current view than the annual report. Its interim statements are generally unaudited, and its MD&A focuses on the quarter and year-to-date period. Compare the 10-Q with the last 10-K to identify changes in debt, cash, legal matters, risk factors, share count, segments or accounting estimates.

8-K: current events and earnings announcements

An 8-K is used for material developments such as leadership changes, acquisitions, financing transactions, bankruptcy-related events or other information investors should receive before the next periodic report. The SEC’s investor guidance says companies generally must make most 8-K disclosures within four business days of the triggering event, although some items have different deadlines. Because filing requirements can change, check the current rule when timing matters.

Look for Item 2.02, Results of Operations and Financial Condition when searching for an earnings announcement. Many companies file a press release as an exhibit to an 8-K. That release may provide revenue, earnings, guidance and management commentary, while the subsequent 10-Q or 10-K supplies fuller statements, notes and reconciliations.

How to find the latest earnings report

  1. Open EDGAR’s company search. Enter the issuer’s name or ticker and open the filing-history page.
  2. Sort by the most recent filing date. Identify an 8-K with Item 2.02 or the latest 10-Q/10-K, depending on whether you need the announcement or the complete report.
  3. Open the filing and its exhibits. The earnings release may be attached to the 8-K rather than displayed as the main document.
  4. Check the period and date. Confirm that the release refers to the quarter or fiscal year you intend to analyze.
  5. Visit the issuer’s IR results page. Use it to locate a webcast, presentation, fact sheet or spreadsheet that may make the announcement easier to read.
  6. Verify key numbers in the periodic filing. Once the 10-Q or 10-K is available, check revenue, operating income, cash flow, debt, share counts and unusual items against the statements and notes.

A release and a filing can appear on different days. The release is often the fastest explanation of what management is announcing; the periodic report is the fuller record for analysis.

For business and strategy

Start with Business to understand products, customers, geographic markets, suppliers, seasonality and competition. Then compare the description with the company’s reported segments and revenue categories. A change in segment definitions can make year-over-year comparisons less direct.

For risk and uncertainty

Read Risk Factors before relying on projections or guidance. Look for risks involving demand, concentration of customers or suppliers, regulation, litigation, cybersecurity, foreign exchange, debt covenants and access to capital. Risk language is not a prediction that an event will occur; it identifies exposures the company considers significant.

For performance and cash needs

In MD&A, look for explanations of changes in revenue, margins, operating expenses, working capital, liquidity and capital resources. Compare management’s explanation with the cash-flow statement and balance-sheet movements. A rise in reported profit does not necessarily mean more cash was generated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the numbers and their definitions

Use the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, statement of stockholders’ equity and accompanying notes together. Notes may explain acquisitions, impairments, leases, debt maturities, tax rates, stock compensation, pension obligations, segments and non-GAAP measures. If a headline metric is adjusted, find the reconciliation and the company’s definition before comparing it with another issuer.

How to judge whether a source is reliable

“Reliable” should mean traceable and appropriately qualified, not automatically true. EDGAR filings are primary, regulated disclosures that preserve the issuer’s wording, exhibits, dates and amendment history. They are generally more complete than a news summary or social-media post, but they remain documents prepared by the company.

The SEC’s investor guidance states: “The SEC neither writes the 10-K nor vouches for its accuracy.” SEC staff review can identify apparent deficiencies or inconsistencies, but the agency does not write an issuer’s report or certify every statement in it. Use the filing to trace a claim to its source, then consider the accounting basis, period, assumptions and any contradictory disclosure elsewhere in the report.

A practical source hierarchy

  1. Filed periodic report: best for complete financial statements, notes and formal disclosures.
  2. Filed 8-K and exhibit: best for the timing and wording of a material announcement.
  3. Issuer IR materials: useful summaries and supplemental formats, subject to verification.
  4. Third-party summaries: helpful for orientation, but check every material figure against the filing.

Using Inline XBRL and SEC data tools

Some EDGAR submissions contain Inline XBRL, which embeds structured tags that software can parse. This makes it easier to extract values and compare issuers across periods. It does not remove the need to read the surrounding statement or note: a tag may have a specific unit, sign, scale, duration, segment, member or accounting definition.

SEC financial-statement datasets can include as-filed submissions, several periods and amended filings. Use those datasets as research aids, not replacements for the exact filing. Before importing a number into a spreadsheet, confirm the form, filing date, amendment status, period, currency and whether the value is quarterly, year-to-date or annual.

Checks before trusting an extracted value

  • Open the tagged value in the filing and read its label and context.
  • Confirm whether the figure is reported in dollars, thousands or millions.
  • Check whether it is a point-in-time balance or a period total.
  • Look for restatements, reclassifications or amended filings.
  • Compare the extracted number with the visible statement and relevant footnote.

Amendments, restatements and conflicting dates

An amendment is not automatically a correction to every number in the original report. Open the amended filing and identify which item changed. The amendment may update a particular section, add certifications, correct an exhibit or revise financial information. Use the latest applicable version for analysis and retain the original filing date for your timeline.

When an earnings release, 8-K and 10-Q show different dates, separate three concepts: the date the event occurred, the date management announced it and the date the filing was submitted. Also check whether the announcement covers a fiscal period that does not align with the calendar quarter.

What changes for non-U.S. and private companies

This workflow is designed for U.S. public companies that report to the SEC. Foreign private issuers and companies listed in other jurisdictions may use different forms, accounting regimes and national filing systems; a U.S. 10-K or 10-Q may not exist. For those issuers, identify the market regulator and use the company’s local investor-relations or financial-results page, then verify the applicable reporting standard and period conventions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Private companies generally do not publish the same comprehensive public filings. You may find voluntary financial statements, bond-market disclosures, court records or filings with a local registry, but availability and detail vary. Do not assume that a private-company press release has the completeness or filing status of an SEC periodic report.

A repeatable checklist for any company

  • Find the issuer by legal name or ticker in EDGAR, if it is a U.S. SEC filer.
  • Open the newest 10-K, 10-Q and relevant 8-K rather than relying on a single summary.
  • Write down the reporting period, filing date, form and amendment suffix.
  • Read the statement, MD&A, risk factors and notes that relate to your question.
  • Use the IR page for releases, webcasts and spreadsheets, but verify important values in filings.
  • Distinguish GAAP figures from adjusted or non-GAAP measures and read reconciliations.
  • Check Inline XBRL values against the displayed statements and their contexts.
  • For a non-U.S. or private issuer, switch to the relevant jurisdiction’s registry and rules.

This process gives you a dated, source-traceable record while preserving the limits of company-reported information.
