1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best place to find parts for a 1970s American car is usually not one universal store. Start with the car’s exact year, make, model, body style, engine and trim, then search a make-specific restoration catalog, manufacturer-listed licensed suppliers where available, classic-parts marketplaces and specialist salvage or NOS suppliers. Compare each listing’s fitment evidence, part type, condition, completeness, shipping and return terms before ordering.
“1970s American car” covers thousands of applications. A part that fits a 1972 two-door with one engine may not fit a 1972 four-door, wagon or performance trim. Treat every listing as application-specific rather than assuming a supplier’s reputation or category proves compatibility.

- Engine size and configuration
- Trim or performance package
- Transmission, axle, brake and other options when relevant
Use the vehicle identification number, build sheet, casting number or the number stamped on the old component when a seller asks for additional proof. A 1970s model can have mid-year changes, multiple engines and option-specific brackets, wiring, interior pieces or suspension parts. Search results that show only a make and a broad year range are leads, not confirmation.

Build a part description
Describe the component by its function and location: “1974 Chevrolet Nova two-door front right fender,” for example, is more useful than “Nova body part.” Add whether you need a complete assembly, a bare housing, a left or right side, or a component with hardware. Photograph your old part and measure mounting points before contacting a seller.
Use several sourcing channels
Different channels solve different problems. A restoration catalog may be strongest for reproduction trim, while a salvage yard may be the only practical source for an original odd-shaped bracket. The table below shows where each channel fits in a search.

Understand the part types before choosing
“The part” can mean several materially different products. Decide whether originality, show-correct appearance, low cost or dependable function is your priority.
| Part type | What it means in a buying decision | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Original used | Removed from another vehicle. It may preserve factory details but can carry wear, corrosion, cracks or hidden fatigue. | What donor model and year was it removed from? Are mounting points straight? What damage and repairs are present? |
| NOS (new old stock) | An old, unused replacement that may retain original materials and packaging. Age can still affect rubber, adhesives, plating or finishes. | Is it genuinely unused? Has it been stored in heat or moisture? Are seals, foam or coatings still serviceable? |
| Refurbished or rebuilt | An existing part restored by a seller or specialist. Quality depends on the process and the components replaced. | What was rebuilt, tested or replaced, and is any warranty offered? |
| Licensed reproduction | A newly manufactured copy authorized by the vehicle manufacturer or its restoration program where such licensing exists. | Is the manufacturer licensed for that program? Does the reproduction match the correct year and trim? |
| Aftermarket replacement | A new alternative designed to perform the function, sometimes with differences in appearance, materials or details. | What changes from the original? Does it require modifications or different hardware? |
Hemmings distinguishes new/NOS, used and refurbished parts in its marketplace descriptions, while H&H says its selection includes OEM-style reproductions and aftermarket alternatives. Those labels describe a category; they do not certify an individual listing’s fit or condition.

Search the catalogs efficiently
- Start with a make-specific catalog. Enter the complete vehicle description, not just “1970s parts.” Filter by model family and then by body, engine and year. Save the catalog’s part number and application notes.
- Check manufacturer resources for licensed reproductions. For a Chevrolet project, use the licensed restoration-parts resource. Chevrolet advises: “Before purchasing any reproduction parts for your valuable project, make sure the manufacturer is licensed by GM Restoration Parts.” Licensing helps establish authorization; it does not replace application checking.
- Search marketplaces using several terms. Combine year, model, body style, side or position, engine and the original part number. Try both the catalog name and the workshop term; sellers may describe the same assembly differently.
- Check salvage and NOS suppliers for discontinued items. Send the seller photos, dimensions and numbers from your old part. Ask whether the pictured item is the exact piece you will receive rather than a representative image.
- Use a manual to resolve naming conflicts. A parts or service manual can show exploded diagrams and assembly names, helping you search for a bracket, retainer or subassembly that a general search misses.
Verify fitment with the seller
Before paying, ask questions that force a specific answer. A reliable exchange should establish:
- Exact year range and model line covered
- Body style and side or position
- Engine, transmission or option restrictions
- Original, NOS, used, refurbished, licensed reproduction or aftermarket status
- Part, casting or manufacturer number, if present
- Whether all brackets, clips, lenses, fasteners or seals shown are included
- Any bends, cracks, rust-through, repairs, missing tabs, pitting or fading
- Measurements and clear photos of mounting surfaces
- Return window, restocking charges, warranty and who pays return shipping
Ask for a written confirmation that the seller believes the part fits your exact vehicle description. Keep the message with the order. A marketplace search result or a supplier’s broad make coverage is not proof that a particular listing fits.

Compare the real cost, not just the listing price
Two apparently similar parts can have very different landed costs. Compare:
- Item price
- Shipping, including oversized or freight charges for panels, glass and bumpers
- Insurance or damage-claim requirements
- Return shipping and restocking fees
- Required hardware, seals, clips or adapters not included in the base listing
- Warranty terms for rebuilt or reproduction components
For fragile or oversized parts, ask how the seller packs corners, glass edges and mounting tabs, and whether the carrier inspection process must be followed. Photograph the package before opening it and the part immediately after unboxing so damage can be documented within the stated claim period.

When an original part is worth pursuing
Choose original or NOS when details matter
Original or NOS components make sense when factory markings, grain, lettering, hardware or concours authenticity are important. They can also be preferable for unusual brackets and castings that reproductions do not reproduce accurately. Expect condition and availability to vary, and inspect aged rubber, foam, adhesives and plated surfaces rather than assuming “new” means recently manufactured.
Choose reproduction or aftermarket when function is the priority
A licensed reproduction can offer a closer visual match than a generic replacement. An aftermarket part may be the practical choice for a driver when it performs the same function and is easier to replace. Confirm whether installation requires drilling, reshaping, alternate fasteners or changes to adjacent parts before committing.
Use manuals as a sourcing tool
A model-specific service, parts or wiring manual is more than a repair reference. Its diagrams can reveal that the item you need is part of a larger assembly, identify left-versus-right variations and provide period terminology for marketplace searches. Mopar’s official restoration page lists service, parts and wiring manuals for older vehicles, including manuals for 1979 and earlier models. That does not mean every American car has the same coverage.
Recommended Free Tools
Match the manual to the exact year, model, engine and task. A wiring manual may not provide body-panel part numbers; a parts book may not include the adjustment procedure you need. Verify the edition and coverage description before buying a printed manual.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Ordering by year alone: add make, model, body, engine and trim, then check option notes.
- Assuming a broad catalog covers every model: use the supplier’s listed coverage as a starting point and confirm your application.
- Treating “OEM-style” as factory-original: ask what differs in material, finish, dimensions or hardware.
- Buying a used assembly without checking completeness: request photos of the back, mounting points and every included component.
- Ignoring production changes: ask about early/late-year breaks and option-specific revisions.
- Choosing the cheapest part without calculating returns: include shipping, modifications and restocking fees in the comparison.
- Relying on a stock photo: confirm that the photo shows the exact item and request current images.
A practical decision path
| Your priority | Start here | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Factory-correct appearance | Make-specific catalog or manufacturer-listed licensed supplier | Licensing, finish, trim details and exact body/option fitment |
| Discontinued bracket, casting or odd hardware | Classic salvage or NOS supplier | Measurements, corrosion, cracks, completeness and return terms |
| Several possible suppliers | Classic-parts marketplace | Seller-specific photos, part numbers, condition and total delivered cost |
| Unclear part name or assembly | Model-specific parts or service manual | Edition coverage and diagram or procedure relevance |
| Reliable driver rather than show restoration | Aftermarket or OEM-style replacement | Required modifications, included hardware and warranty |
Final ordering checklist
- Confirm year, make, model, body style, engine, trim and option details.
- Record the old part’s number, measurements and identifying marks.
- Classify the desired item as original used, NOS, refurbished, licensed reproduction or aftermarket.
- Compare at least two plausible listings when available.
- Get written fitment confirmation and disclosure of damage or missing pieces.
- Calculate shipping, insurance, returns and any required hardware.
- Save the listing, messages and photographs until installation is complete.
That process turns a vague search for “1970s American car parts” into a defensible purchase decision. The right source depends on the exact vehicle and whether your priority is authenticity, condition, availability or function; no single retailer or directory covers every make, trim and component.
