After choosing a listing, check its own page for operating-system support, whether it downloads or runs in a browser, and which controls it accepts.
Catalogs change constantly, so treat these pages as live directories rather than permanent lists. The practical question is not only “is this free?” but also “is it a conventional demo for my computer and preferred controls?”

These storefronts cover the main alternatives to a single seasonal event. They are not formal quality rankings; they differ in how they collect, label and filter free previews.

itch.io: the broadest search-and-filter approach
Open the demo catalog
Choose the demo tag on itch.io, then set the price filter to free. Narrow the results to Windows, macOS, Linux or browser play according to the device you actually intend to use. Because itch.io hosts both downloadable projects and browser-playable games, the platform filter alone is not enough: read the listing to see whether a file download, a web launch or both are offered.
Use filters before scrolling
itch.io exposes more discovery controls than a simple storefront shelf. Genre tags help separate, for example, a short puzzle preview from a role-playing prototype. Input-method filters identify keyboard-and-mouse, gamepad and named controller support where the creator has supplied those tags. Session-length and related attributes can help when you want a compact tryout rather than an open-ended build.
A free-demo search snapshot in 2026 showed 3,223 results. That is a time-sensitive count across the catalog’s supported formats, not a stable total of Windows downloads. New projects, removed pages and changed tags can alter it at any time, so do not use the number as a guarantee of current inventory.

Inspect the game page
Before downloading, read the description and the visible requirements. Confirm the operating system, whether the build is downloadable or browser-based, the input method and any notes about a prologue, prototype or playtest. A “demo” tag is a discovery aid; the creator’s own listing defines what you receive.

GOG: a dedicated collection of free previews
Browse the main demos page
GOG maintains a dedicated demos collection that frames the entries as free previews. This is useful when you want a storefront-style list rather than a large community catalog. Open the live collection, then use its current filters or sorting controls to narrow the selection.
Check the festival route when it is active
GOG also publishes a separate festival-demos collection during periods when that event collection is active. It is an additional browsing route, not a permanent replacement for the main demos page. A festival shelf can disappear or change after the event, so rely on the current page rather than an old list.
Confirm the exact edition and requirements
On a GOG game page, verify the supported operating system and how the demo is delivered before selecting a download. The fact that a title appears in a demos collection does not establish that it runs on every desktop operating system or that it supports a controller. Those are listing-specific details.

Use the Free Games page deliberately
Open Epic Games Store’s official Free Games page and locate its Demos section. The page also contains free-to-play titles and rotating free giveaways. Those categories are different offers: a free-to-play game is a full product supported by its own model, while a giveaway is a time-limited claim or promotion, and a demo is a preview of a game. Select the Demos section when your goal is specifically to try a portion of a paid or forthcoming game.

Read each listing rather than trusting the shelf label
Epic’s section label tells you how the item was grouped, not every technical detail. Open the individual page and look for operating-system information, download requirements, input support and wording that identifies a prologue, playtest or another free experience. The selection changes, so a live page is more reliable than a fixed “best demos” list.
How to choose the right listing
Use the following checks in order. They prevent the most common mismatch: installing a free item that is not the kind of demo you wanted or cannot run on your machine.
- Define the target device. Decide whether you need Windows, macOS, Linux or a browser session. If you are on a handheld PC or another compatibility layer, treat the store’s stated operating system as the starting point and look for additional notes on the game page.
- Separate download from browser play. A browser game normally launches on the web, while a downloadable build creates files on your computer. Choose the format that fits your storage, connection and willingness to install software.
- Identify the access type. Look for words such as demo, prologue, playtest, free-to-play or giveaway. Do not assume that every free entry offers a conventional slice of a commercial game.
- Check controls. If you use keyboard and mouse, confirm that those inputs are listed or described. If you want a gamepad or a particular controller type, look for the corresponding input tag or requirement. A controller is optional for browsing and for many PC demos.
- Review the page’s requirements. Read the creator or publisher notes for operating system, download size, launch method and any special prerequisites stated there.
- Check availability at the moment you click. Dynamic collections can change between discovery and download. If an entry has vanished, search the storefront again rather than relying on an old bookmark.
Understanding labels that look like demos
Demo
A conventional demo gives you a limited portion of a game so you can evaluate its design, performance or controls. The exact limits vary by title; the individual listing should explain what is included.

Prologue
A prologue is often a standalone introductory experience. It may overlap with the opening of the full game, but the label does not guarantee a particular length or feature set.

Playtest
A playtest is an evaluation build. Access, stability and content can differ from a finished demo, and the page may describe a sign-up or limited testing period. Treat it as testing access rather than a permanent preview unless the listing says otherwise.
Free-to-play game
Free-to-play describes the game’s access model, not a short trial. It may be a complete game with optional purchases, but the store page’s own terms determine what is available without payment.
Giveaway
A giveaway is a promotional offer, often rotating on a schedule. It is separate from a demo and may grant a full game for a stated period or claim window. Use the store’s offer details to understand the entitlement.
Platform and controller compatibility
Operating-system labels and input tags are useful filters, but they are not substitutes for the game’s own requirements. A catalog result can include several formats, and a creator may tag a project for browser play while also providing a download. Open the listing and confirm the exact build you intend to use.

Gamepad support is similarly specific. itch.io can expose gamepad and named-controller filters, but an untagged game may still require keyboard and mouse or may document support only in its description. Do not buy a controller solely to browse demos. If a controller matters to you, select games whose listings explicitly identify compatible input.
A practical download workflow
For itch.io
- Open the demo-tagged catalog.
- Set the price to free.
- Select your operating system or browser play.
- Add genre, input-method or session-length filters as needed.
- Open a promising result and read its format, controls and requirements.
- Use the download or browser option shown on that listing.
For GOG
- Open the dedicated demos collection.
- Use the live page’s available filters or sorting.
- If a festival-demos collection is currently active, browse it as a second route.
- Open each game page to verify operating system, delivery method and input support.
- Download only after the listing matches your device and expectations.
For Epic Games Store
- Open the official Free Games page.
- Choose the Demos section rather than Free-to-Play or Giveaways.
- Open the individual product page.
- Confirm operating system, download details, controls and whether the item is a demo, prologue or playtest.
- Follow the page’s current installation instructions.
Common problems and what to do
- The result will not run on your computer: Recheck the operating-system line and choose a listing that explicitly supports your platform or browser.
- You expected a download but got a web game: Return to the format information on the listing; itch.io in particular includes both browser and downloadable projects.
- The controller does nothing: Confirm that gamepad support is stated, then check whether the game expects a named controller type or keyboard input.
- A page looks free but is not a demo: Read the access label and distinguish demo, prologue, playtest, free-to-play and giveaway categories.
- A bookmarked collection is empty: Dynamic catalogs change. Reopen the platform’s live demos area and search again.
Which destination should you start with?
Choose itch.io when you want the widest discovery controls and are comfortable evaluating individual creator pages. Choose GOG when you prefer a dedicated storefront collection of free previews, with a festival route available when that collection is active. Choose Epic Games Store when you already use its Free Games page and can filter out the neighboring free-to-play and giveaway offers.
For any of the three, the dependable process is the same: filter for your platform, distinguish a true demo from other free access types, and verify format and controls on the game’s own page immediately before downloading.
