itch.io: the strongest indie-first starting point
itch.io’s current discovery page visibly combines Free and Web labels with projects whose names or descriptions identify them as demos. Its fresh-games area also says that the catalog is constantly updating. That combination is useful when you want to find small projects quickly or play in a browser without installing a client.
How to search itch.io
- Open the discovery area and look for the Free label if you want a zero-price download or browser game.
- Use the Web label to surface projects that can be played in a browser. Treat this as an availability signal, not a guarantee that every browser or device will work.
- Search for “demo” and inspect the resulting project titles and descriptions. Some entries are explicitly called demos; others are complete free games that happen to appear beside them.
- Open an individual project page. Confirm whether the creator describes it as a demo, a full free game, a prologue or a playtest.
- Read the page’s platform and launch information. If it offers browser play, use the stated launch button; if it provides a download, check the listed operating system and any size or hardware notes before downloading.
Why itch.io works well for indie demos

How to browse GOG for indie demos
- Open GOG’s Demo catalog rather than starting with the entire store.
- Apply the Demo filter if the page opens in a broader category or if you have arrived through search.
- Select the Demo + Indie tag mix to reduce the list to demos associated with the indie tag.
- Open each candidate’s product page and read the edition description. Check that it is a demo rather than a full game, bonus item, prologue or time-limited event.
- Review the operating-system and other platform requirements shown on that page. Confirm the current price and availability for your region before beginning an installation.
When GOG is the better choice
GOG is convenient when the word “demo” is your primary search criterion. The dedicated catalog gives you a focused starting list, and the indie tag helps remove some of the larger-store noise. Epic Games Store: combine Free and Game Demo filters
The Epic Games Store’s browse page currently offers both a Free price filter and a Game Demo type filter. Demo entries appear among its listings. Because the catalog covers far more than indie projects, those two controls identify free demos but do not, by themselves, make the results exclusively independent games.

- Set the price control to Free.
- Set the type control to Game Demo.

- Open a result’s full listing. Verify that the item is a demo and check its current price, supported operating system and other requirements.
What Epic’s filters do—and do not—tell you

How to tell a demo from a free game, prologue or playtest
Store terminology is inconsistent, so use a short verification routine before you invest time in a download:
- Read the title and short description. Look for an explicit statement that the release is a demo. “Free” alone usually describes price, not scope.
- Check the developer’s longer description. It may explain whether the build covers one level, an early chapter, a vertical slice or a complete standalone experience.
- Look for access language. “Prologue,” “playtest” and “demo” can imply different goals and update schedules. Do not treat them as identical.
- Confirm the current price on the full page. Catalog badges and search results can lag behind a change in pricing or availability.
- Check the platform section. A free listing is not evidence that the game supports your operating system, browser or device.
Platform, region and availability checks
A catalog page is a snapshot, not a permanent guarantee. Inventory, regional access, price, platform support and filters can change. Before launching, confirm four details on the individual game page:

If a friend recommends a demo that you cannot see, search the exact title on each storefront and then check the game’s own page. A missing result can reflect a catalog update or regional difference; do not infer that the title has been permanently removed from every destination.

The page says “free,” but checkout or installation asks for something else
Reopen the full listing and read the current price and edition information. A free discovery label may refer to a separate demo edition, a promotional period or a different item in the same series. Select the entry explicitly identified as the demo and verify the price again before proceeding.

Return to the requirements shown on the game page. Compare the listed operating system and any stated hardware or software prerequisites with your device. If your platform is not listed, the storefront evidence does not support assuming compatibility.
A browser game does not start
Confirm that the project actually offers a Web build rather than only a downloadable file. Reopen the project page, use its stated browser launch control and check whether the creator lists a supported browser or device. If no browser build is described, choose the downloadable version or another listing that clearly carries the Web label.
The result is a prologue or playtest, not a conventional demo
Read the release description before playing. A prologue may be a separate introductory episode, while a playtest may be intended to collect feedback during development. Keep it only if that format matches what you want; otherwise return to the store’s demo filter or search for another listing.
The listing disappears after you bookmark it
Catalogs update continuously. Search the title again, check the creator’s page and verify regional visibility. If the individual page no longer offers a playable file or shows a different price, treat the current page as authoritative rather than relying on an older bookmark or screenshot.

- If you specifically want a limited preview of a commercial project, switch to GOG’s Demo catalog and apply Demo + Indie.
- Use the Epic Games Store when you want a larger catalog: set Free and Game Demo, then inspect results for indie context.
- Open two or three individual pages and compare their format, operating system and launch method.
- Choose the listing whose current details match your device and the kind of experience you want. Do not download solely because a search card says “free.”
