Best coal locations at a glance
Coal deposits are spread across several biomes, but the best location depends on whether you need a permanent mining base, a quick manual haul, or the most Coal possible in one base radius. The counts below are reported node placements, not guaranteed hourly yields.

Different map datasets use slightly different labels. Verdant Brook peak and the Sealed Realm of the Swift can refer to nearby or equivalent map-reference areas, so use the coordinates and the physical terrain rather than relying on a location name alone.
Which coal spot should you choose?
Best all-around base: Verdant Brook peak
The summit around (190, -40) is the safest recommendation when you want Coal and Ore at the same base. The reported layout is approximately eight Coal nodes and eight Ore nodes. That combination supports Refined Ingot production without sending workers between separate resource camps. The elevated summit is also described as difficult for raids to path to, which can reduce raid pressure compared with an exposed lowland base.

Inspect the entire summit before placing the Palbox. A node only helps automation when it sits inside the base work radius, and uneven rock can leave too little room for beds, storage, or a crafting line. Place the Palbox after confirming that the desired Coal and Ore nodes are inside the circle, then leave clear routes between the deposits and your storage containers.
Largest mixed cluster: Devout Mineshaft ridge
The ridge near (26, -137) is listed with 10 Coal and 12 Ore inside one base circle. That is the highest combined count in the reviewed 1.0-file analysis and makes it the strongest choice when your priority is maximum raw material density rather than the shortest run from fast travel.
The nearest fast-travel point is reported to be about 190 metres away. That distance is minor for a player making occasional trips, but it matters when you repeatedly carry heavy loads or are still building the base. Scout the ridge first and verify that the nodes remain inside the Palbox radius after you rotate or relocate the box.
Best Coal-first outpost: north of Duneshelter
The site at (327, 485) is reported with nine Coal and three Ore. It gives up some Ore overlap in exchange for a higher Coal count, making it a practical dedicated Coal camp once your production needs are dominated by Carbon Fiber or other Coal recipes.
This is a desert location. Plan for high daytime heat and a cooler night cycle. Bring temperature-resistant clothing, food, and a spare set of equipment before attempting to build there. A base that is productive on paper can become inconvenient if workers or the player repeatedly suffer temperature effects.

Fast manual route: Deep Sands Dunes
Deep Sands Dunes, around (319, 499), is identified by an earlier coordinate guide as an eight-Coal cluster. It is a good target when you have not committed to a second base and simply need a large haul. Travel to the marked area, mine the surrounding nodes, and return through fast travel once your inventory is full.
Because the count comes from a separate guide and the coordinate is approximate, use the terrain and nearby landmarks to locate the cluster. Do not treat the point as a precision guarantee after a map revision.
Other workable routes
- Twilight Dunes southeast (-98, -121): six reported Coal nodes, suitable for a repeatable desert run when the larger clusters are inconvenient.
- Twilight Dunes west near Anubis (-158, -93): five reported nodes and an earlier route into the desert; useful before you can safely establish a larger camp.
- Mount Obsidian near the Anubis Statue (-570, -652): six reported Coal nodes, but volcanic heat and rough traversal increase preparation costs.
- Bamboo Groves Watchtower (-233, -365): five reported nodes in a flatter, more accessible setting. Its lower density can be worthwhile if easy construction matters more than maximum output.
Why Coal matters in progression
Coal is not merely a fuel pickup. It combines with Ore to make Refined Ingots and is also used for Carbon Fiber. Those recipes make Coal a mid-game bottleneck: an Ore base without a dependable Coal supply eventually forces repeated expeditions or a second mining base.
Coal also sits on the path toward the Coal Mine technology. The reviewed guides disagree on the exact unlock level, so use the technology tree in your current game version as the authority rather than relying on a level quoted by an older guide. Once the Coal Mine is available, the value of a dedicated Coal outpost changes because a base can produce Coal without depending entirely on natural deposits.
How to farm Coal manually
Early-game procedure
- Choose a cluster with at least six nodes. The Deep Sands Dunes route is the largest eight-node option identified in the early route guide.
- Prepare for the biome. Desert and volcanic sites need heat protection, and deserts can become cold at night as temperatures swing between day and night.
- Carry your strongest available mining tool, food, and enough inventory space for the entire circuit. Mining a node and immediately dropping materials wastes the trip.
- Mine every Coal node in the cluster, then open the map and return by fast travel instead of walking the full distance with a heavy load.
- Mark the location on your map if you are using it as a recurring route. Nearby labels differ between map datasets, while coordinates remain the more useful reference.
Manual mining is most efficient before you have a spare base slot, a suitable Mining workforce, or Coal automation. It is also useful for an emergency batch of Coal when a base’s transport chain is backed up.

Setting up an automated Coal base
Place the Palbox around the nodes
Natural deposits do not automatically become a base resource. Place the Palbox so the Coal nodes you intend to mine fall inside the work radius. At mixed sites, prioritize the nodes that are closest together; fitting one extra deposit inside the circle is usually more valuable than leaving a large empty building area.
Assign the right work skills
Assigned workers need Mining suitability of level 2 or better for the Ore and Coal nodes described by the location guide. Add Transporting-capable Pals as well, because mining only fills the ground with items; a transporter must carry those items to storage before the base can use them in crafting.
Keep storage close to the mining area and avoid putting beds, farms, or crafting stations directly across the workers’ routes. Pathing failures often look like low mining speed when the real problem is that a worker cannot reach a node or cannot deliver its load.
Build for recovery, not just density
- Leave a clear path from each deposit to storage.
- Use more than one storage container if a high-density site produces faster than a single container can absorb.
- Provide beds and food inside the base so mining workers do not abandon the route to recover elsewhere.
- Keep a small open area for replacing the Palbox or adjusting the layout if a patch changes a node’s position.

Tetroise is reported to provide a flat +1 mining suitability rank to other workers. This is a support effect rather than a Coal node count, so its value depends on the mining team around it. Check the in-game skill description after each major patch before rebuilding a workforce around the bonus.

Turtacle Terra for carrying

Natural deposits remain valuable until the Coal Mine is unlocked, especially when you need a large one-time supply for Refined Ingots or Carbon Fiber. After the Coal Mine becomes available, compare its production and operating cost with the travel, construction, and worker requirements of a node outpost.

The exact technology level cited by different pages is not consistent. Open your current Technology menu, find the Coal Mine entry, and confirm both its unlock requirement and materials before dismantling a mining base. A patch can move an item between tiers, while the natural nodes and coordinate guides may remain unchanged for a time.
How to compare locations before committing
Coal count versus Ore overlap
A pure-Coal site maximizes Coal per base circle, but an Ore-and-Coal site can reduce travel for Refined Ingots. Verdant Brook’s reported eight-and-eight split is balanced; Devout Mineshaft’s 10 Coal and 12 Ore is denser; north of Duneshelter favors Coal with nine Coal and three Ore.
Terrain and raid pathing
Summits can be defensible because raids have difficulty reaching them, but steep ground can also disrupt worker pathing and limit building space. Flat sites are easier to construct on even when they contain fewer nodes. Walk the perimeter in person before selecting the final Palbox position.
Fast-travel distance
A nearby fast-travel point matters most for manual mining and for the first construction trip. The Devout Mineshaft ridge is listed about 190 metres from fast travel, while the larger strategic question is whether you will visit the site often after automation is established.

Temperature
Desert sites have hot days and colder nights; Mount Obsidian adds volcanic heat. Temperature protection should be treated as part of the location’s real cost. A lower-density temperate site can be the better early base if it lets you build and mine without constantly changing equipment.
Technology timing
If the Coal Mine is already unlocked in your technology tree, choose a base for Ore overlap, construction convenience, or another resource instead of Coal density alone. If it is still locked, the higher-count clusters provide more immediate value.
What the published node counts do—and do not—mean
Palworld.tools describes its node-count method as exact rather than estimated, and its 2026 analysis lists 12 Ore and 10 Coal at the Devout Mineshaft ridge. A 2026 Palworld knowledge-base entry lists about eight Coal and eight Ore at Verdant Brook peak and nine Coal with three Ore north of Duneshelter. These figures describe placements in a map dataset.
PalMods extracted 827 static Coal placements from Palworld 1.0 data, but the dataset does not include respawn timing. Consequently, no cited count can be converted into a guaranteed hourly production rate. Respawn behavior, node positions, worker speed, pathing, and patch changes can all affect what you see in a live world.

Troubleshooting a Coal base
Workers ignore the nodes
- Confirm the Coal nodes are inside the Palbox radius.
- Check that the assigned worker has Mining suitability of level 2 or better.
- Remove structures blocking the route and test the path on foot.
- Recall and redeploy the worker if it is stuck on uneven summit or volcanic terrain.
Coal is mined but not usable
- Place storage close enough for Transporting workers to reach it.
- Verify that food, beds, and sanity recovery are available in the same base.
- Separate overflow storage from crafting inputs so a full container does not stop the transport loop.
The trip is too dangerous
- Use heat protection in Twilight Dunes, Deep Sands, north of Duneshelter, and Mount Obsidian.
- Carry cold protection for desert nights rather than planning only for daytime conditions.
- Start with Bamboo Groves Watchtower or another easier site if the top-density location prevents safe construction.
The map marker does not match the guide
Check the coordinate first, then search the surrounding ridge, summit, or dune field. Nearby names vary between guides, and a future patch can shift a marker or alter a node placement. Treat the count as a planning reference and verify the deposits in your own world before moving the Palbox.

- One permanent mixed-resource base: choose Verdant Brook peak around (190, -40).
- Maximum Coal and Ore in one circle: inspect Devout Mineshaft ridge at (26, -137).
- Coal-focused production: use north of Duneshelter at (327, 485).

- Easy construction over density: consider Bamboo Groves Watchtower, accepting its lower reported count.
Recheck the Technology menu before replacing a natural-node base with a Coal Mine, and recheck the terrain in-game before committing to any coordinate. The published figures are useful for choosing a destination, but they are not promises of a fixed respawn rate or hourly yield.
