You can find carrots in three places: village farm plots, Pillager Outpost chests and shipwreck supply chests. If none of those turn up, zombies, husks and zombie villagers sometimes drop one. Once you have a single carrot, plant it on farmland and you never need to search again.
The places to look, in order
1. Village farm plots
Carrot crops can generate in village farm plots. Mojang’s own guide, Taking Inventory: Carrot (Duncan Geere, 23 April 2020), lists village plots as a source. Not every plot grows carrots. Some villages have wheat, potatoes or beetroot instead, so check the rest of the village or move to another one before giving up.

2. Pillager Outpost chests
Chests inside Pillager Outposts can contain carrots. Outposts are guarded by pillagers, so bring a weapon and armor, and expect a fight.
3. Shipwreck supply chests
Shipwrecks have several chests. The supply chest is the one that can hold carrots. Ships are found on the ocean floor or washed up on beaches, so a beach wreck is the easiest to reach.

4. Zombie-family drops (fallback)
Zombies can occasionally drop a carrot. The Minecraft Wiki also lists husks and zombie villagers as sources. This is a low-chance route, so use it when no village or structure is nearby. Nobody has established a measured “fastest route”. It depends on your seed, your position and your edition.
Plant the first carrot
Use the carrot on farmland to start a crop. Mojang reports that a mature crop drops 1–5 carrots, and a Fortune-enchanted tool can raise that. Keep your first carrot for planting rather than eating it. After one harvest you have a renewable supply.

Edition and odds
Loot chances differ between Java and Bedrock, and they can change between versions. The Minecraft Wiki’s figures are secondary-source numbers. Check them against the loot table for your own edition and version.
- Village farm plots: about 30% for plains villages and 10% for snowy villages.
- Zombie-family rare drops: a 2.5% pool, with Looting adding 1 percentage point per level. That pool can also give an iron ingot or a potato, so the chance of a carrot specifically is lower.
- Bedrock Edition has an extra route, the Bonus Chest, according to the same wiki.
Carrots were added in version 1.4.2, the Pretty Scary Update, so any world from that version onward can have them.
