For controls, features and vehicle operation, start with BMW’s digital Owner’s Manual or Driver’s Guide. For workshop procedures, wiring diagrams and diagnostics, use BMW’s technical-information systems instead. The correct route depends on your country and the BMW’s model year.
Owner’s manual or repair information: which do you need?
An owner’s manual explains how to operate the vehicle and use its features. BMW’s technical information resources are for servicing and repair: they include items such as repair instructions, diagnostic guidance, wiring diagrams and technical data. A maintenance schedule is a separate resource again.

United States: use the 17-digit VIN
BMW of North America’s Digital Owner’s Manual lookup asks for the vehicle’s full 17-digit VIN. You can find the VIN on the windshield or inside the driver-side doorjamb. BMW says the online lookup is available for select model years, so a VIN lookup may not work for every vehicle.

Install the BMW Driver’s Guide app to access the manual PDF, then select PDF > Owner’s Manual. See BMW’s owner’s manual FAQ for the current instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Step-by-step procedures written from a complete teardown and rebuild, giving you the confidence to tackle repairs at any skill level.
- Over 700+ clear photos and diagrams that simplify complex systems, helping you complete jobs faster and with fewer mistakes.
- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
United Kingdom: Know Your BMW or Driver’s Guide
BMW UK’s Know Your BMW tool creates a personalized guide and videos when you enter the last seven characters of the VIN. The BMW Driver’s Guide app uses the vehicle VIN to unlock its model-specific manual and animated guides; BMW says the app is available through the App Store and Google Play.
Other countries: choose the market-specific source
Manual availability and the right portal can vary by market, model and year. Start from your country’s BMW owner site or app, and check that the selected vehicle matches your BMW’s market and model year. A manual for a similar model sold in another country may not describe the same equipment or specifications.

Where to get BMW workshop repair information
United States and Canada: BMW Techinfo, ISTA and AIR
BMW’s North American Techinfo/TIS resources are for users in the United States and Canada. Registration and an active subscription are required. BMW describes the resources as covering items such as service bulletins, operating-fluid specifications, generic OBD information, training and technical videos, as well as limited legacy repair information for vehicles built before model year 2000.

For repair procedures, use the relevant repair-information application rather than treating the TIS search bar as a general repair-manual search:
Rank #3
- ISTA includes fault-code diagnosis, test plans, repair instructions, technical data, wiring diagrams and P-code lookup.
- AIR provides repair instructions and related labor and parts information.
- TIS search is intended for service bulletins. BMW’s TIS guide directs users to AIR or ISTA for repair instructions.
BMW’s technical guide describes these resources as intended for servicing and repairing unmodified vehicles made for North America. Available information depends on the vehicle and region. BMW’s terms also restrict resale, copying or transfer without written consent.
Outside the United States and Canada: BMW Group AOS
BMW directs users outside North America to BMW Group AOS for technical repair information. AOS availability and applications can vary by country. Its rescue-information VIN search supports vehicles from 2015 onward; BMW advises selecting the brand manually for earlier vehicles. That model-year note applies to the rescue-information VIN search, not necessarily to every AOS function.

Check BMW maintenance recommendations separately
For routine maintenance tasks and intervals, BMW USA points owners to the vehicle’s Maintenance Service Display and Maintenance Booklet rather than the workshop repair systems. BMW’s Service and Warranty Books page lets owners select a model for relevant books and answers maintenance questions. It states that new BMWs start with Ultimate Care coverage for three years or 36,000 miles; coverage and terms depend on the vehicle and market, so check the applicable current information for your car.
North American Techinfo subscription prices
BMW of North America’s subscription page displayed the following prices on October 4, 2026. Prices can change; confirm the live Techinfo subscription page before purchasing.
Best Value
| Subscription | Price displayed October 4, 2026 |
|---|---|
| 24 hours | $32 |
| 30 days | $270 |
| One year | $2,700 |
These are subscription periods, not a guarantee that every document or application will be available for every BMW. Registration and payment are required, and vehicle coverage depends on the information offered for that model.
If you want a printed repair reference
A printed reference can be useful if you prefer working from a book, but verify its fit carefully before relying on it. Match the BMW’s exact series or generation, model-year range and engine, and check the edition and seller. A general repair book is not a substitute for BMW’s current VIN-specific owner information or technical portals.
