Where to Find Archaeology and Cultural-Resource-Management Job Listings

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

For U.S. cultural-resource-management (CRM) work, start with the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA) Job Board. Then search the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Career Center for a wider mix of archaeology jobs and fellowships, check the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) Job Board, and finally open the employer’s own careers page to confirm that the vacancy is still open and to apply.

These boards are useful discovery tools, not guarantees that every listing is current, complete, or independently vetted. Job inventory and deadlines change quickly, so treat a board summary as a lead and the employer’s notice as the controlling source.

The best order for a U.S. job search

1. ACRA Job Board for CRM-specific openings

ACRA is the clearest first stop when your goal is cultural-resource management rather than archaeology in the broadest sense. The association represents the CRM industry and maintains a board labeled “Jobs in Cultural Resource Management.” Its live inventory has included seasonal and permanent field positions, archaeological technicians, project managers, principal investigators, architectural historians, GIS specialists, and historic-preservation roles.

Because ACRA’s audience is industry-focused, its listings are often closer to the work performed by CRM consulting firms and contractors than to university-only searches. The board is primarily U.S.-oriented, and the mix changes as employers add or close vacancies. Do not assume that a position remains available merely because a search result still appears; follow the listing to the employer’s application page and check the closing date.

ACRA also has a salary-posting policy. The association states: “As of June 29, 2022, ACRA will now require salary information such as compensation, salary range, or minimum salary for postings on our job and internship boards.” ACRA notes that listings posted before that policy may or may not include compensation. The policy improves transparency for newer entries, but it does not make every older listing comparable.

2. SAA Career Center for a broader archaeology search

The SAA Career Center covers more than CRM. Its visible listings can include CRM positions alongside university, research-institute, museum, and faculty roles. Use its keyword and location fields to narrow a broad results set. Useful search terms include “CRM,” “cultural resources,” “archaeologist,” “archaeological technician,” “historic preservation,” and the state, region, or city where you can work.

SAA’s job-seeker interface supports accounts, resume posting, applications, and job matches. The association also directs readers to jobs and fellowships, the Cultural Resource Management Expo held at its Annual Meeting, and professional-development resources. Those features make SAA valuable when you are open to several employment settings, but a general archaeology search can produce more irrelevant results than ACRA’s specialized board.

3. SHA Job Board as a complementary source

The Society for Historical Archaeology’s Job Board is another professional source for archaeology and cultural-resource postings. Examples on its live page have included technician and staff-archaeologist roles. It should supplement, rather than replace, ACRA and SAA: the boards do not necessarily carry the same employers or the same types of work.

Read each SHA entry for the same details you would check elsewhere, then use its route to the employer’s full notice or application system. A short association-board summary may omit requirements, travel expectations, benefits, or the date on which applications stop being accepted.

4. The employer’s own careers page for confirmation

Association boards commonly link outward to an employer’s application page. Make that page your final checkpoint. Confirm that the job has not been filled, that the closing date has not passed, and that you meet the eligibility requirements shown in the complete notice. Employer pages often contain fuller descriptions than the board card, including reporting lines, project location, work schedule, benefits, required documents, and instructions for submitting references or transcripts.

Apply through the employer’s stated system unless the notice expressly requests another method. Save a copy of the final description for your records; postings can change after you begin an application.

How the three professional boards differ

Source Primary specialization Roles or features visible in the listings Search and application path What to keep in mind
ACRA Job Board U.S. CRM industry Seasonal and permanent field work, technicians, project management, principal investigators, architectural history, GIS, and historic preservation Board entries commonly direct you to the employer’s details or application page Inventory changes; newer posts should include salary information under ACRA’s June 29, 2022 policy, while older posts may not
SAA Career Center Broad archaeology and related academic or research employment CRM, university, research-institute, faculty, jobs, and fellowships Keyword and location search; job-seeker account, resume, application, and job-match tools Broader results require deliberate keywords and geographic filters
SHA Job Board Historical archaeology and related professional work Examples include technician and staff-archaeologist positions Board listings can lead to the employer’s full notice and application route Use as a complementary board; it does not duplicate every ACRA or SAA opening
Employer careers page The specific organization and project Complete duties, requirements, schedule, benefits, pay details, and submission instructions where provided Final status check and normal application destination The employer’s page controls whether the job is still open and what materials are required

No controlled comparison establishes which board has the highest placement rate, the most complete inventory, or the lowest cost. The practical distinction is specialization, search capability, the kinds of roles visible, and how directly each entry leads to the employer.

A repeatable search-to-application workflow

  1. Define the work you will accept. Decide whether you are targeting CRM fieldwork, laboratory or collections work, GIS, architectural history, historic preservation, project management, academic research, or fellowships. Note the states or regions you can reach and whether seasonal travel is realistic.
  2. Search ACRA first for CRM. Try the exact terms used in the occupation, then add a location. Read beyond the title: “archaeologist” can describe a field technician, a principal investigator, or a manager with very different experience requirements.
  3. Run a wider SAA search. Repeat the search with “CRM,” “cultural resources,” “archaeological technician,” and “historic preservation.” Add your target location and review fellowships separately if you are seeking a training or research appointment.
  4. Check SHA for additional professional postings. Search its board after ACRA and SAA so that a specialized historical-archaeology opening is not missed.
  5. Open the employer’s notice. Use the board’s outward link, locate the original posting, and verify the posting date, deadline, status, work location, and application instructions.
  6. Record the decision facts. Before tailoring materials, write down employment type, pay basis, duration, travel, lodging or per diem, minimum education, field experience, physical requirements, and every document requested.
  7. Apply through the stated channel. Follow the employer’s format for resumes, cover letters, references, transcripts, certifications, or work samples. Keep the vacancy URL or identifying title with your submitted materials so you can distinguish similar applications.

How to evaluate a listing before you invest time

Posting and closing dates

Identify when the notice was posted and when applications close. A board can retain an entry after an employer has stopped accepting applications. If no closing date appears, look for language such as “open until filled,” then confirm the status on the employer’s page rather than assuming the job is active.

Employment type and duration

Separate seasonal, temporary, on-call, full-time, and permanent work. A seasonal field appointment may offer concentrated experience but end when a project or field season ends. Temporary or on-call work can have irregular hours. “Full-time” describes the schedule, not necessarily permanence, so read the contract term and project funding language.

Location, travel, and field conditions

Check whether the listed location is an office, a project area, or a hiring headquarters. CRM work may require extended travel, long field days, rugged terrain, and carrying equipment. Determine whether travel time is paid, whether lodging is supplied, and whether you must relocate between projects. A job that looks attractive by title can be impractical if the schedule and travel are not workable for you.

Pay, benefits, and the basis of comparison

Record whether compensation is hourly, salaried, or stated as a project or seasonal amount. Compare the expected duration, paid travel time, per diem, lodging, health coverage, retirement contributions, leave, and overtime rules. An hourly figure without the number of guaranteed hours is not directly comparable with an annual salary. Individual vacancy offers are not representative wages for the archaeology profession.

Education and experience

Read the minimum qualifications exactly. One field-technician notice may request a relevant bachelor’s degree or field-school experience, while another employer may set different standards. GIS familiarity, a valid driver’s license, specific survey experience, or supervisory history can be role-specific requirements. Do not treat one employer’s checklist as a universal definition of an archaeology career.

Physical and technical requirements

Look for prolonged walking, lifting or carrying equipment, work in rugged terrain, exposure to weather, and long days away from a vehicle or facility. Technical duties may require GIS, GPS, digital recording, mapping, or database skills. If a requirement is unclear, ask the employer a focused question before accepting an interview or offer.

Application materials

List every requested item before you begin: resume or curriculum vitae, cover letter, references, transcripts, field-school documentation, certifications, writing samples, or a portfolio. Submit the requested format and naming convention. Missing a required document can remove you from consideration even when your experience fits.

Using ACRA’s salary policy correctly

ACRA’s policy is a useful screening aid, not a guarantee that every search result will show pay. The association’s statement took effect on June 29, 2022 and covers new job and internship postings by requiring compensation, a salary range, or a minimum salary. Older entries may lack that information. When a figure is present, ask what it covers: base wages, overtime, travel time, per diem, lodging, or a short seasonal term.

Keep the qualification attached to every number. A posted hourly rate applies to that employer’s vacancy under its stated conditions; it does not establish a national median or a standard starting wage. If compensation is absent from a current notice, request the range and benefits before spending money on travel or relocation.

Search terms that reduce irrelevant results

Start with the employer’s language, then narrow by place. Useful combinations include:

  • Discipline: CRM, cultural resources, archaeology, archaeological technician, historic preservation, architectural history, GIS, principal investigator.
  • Level: assistant, field technician, staff archaeologist, project manager, senior archaeologist, principal investigator.
  • Work pattern: seasonal, temporary, on-call, full-time, permanent, fellowship, internship.
  • Geography: state name, metropolitan area, project region, or “nationwide travel” when that is acceptable.

Run several focused searches instead of one very broad query. An entry labeled “environmental specialist” may contain archaeological duties, while a search for only “archaeologist” can miss GIS or historic-preservation roles.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Applying from a stale board card: verify status and deadline on the employer’s page.
  • Assuming every CRM job is local: read travel, lodging, and project-assignment language.
  • Comparing pay figures without context: include duration, guaranteed hours, per diem, benefits, and paid travel.
  • Generalizing one posting’s qualifications: treat degree, field-school, GIS, driving, and physical requirements as employer-specific.
  • Using one board exclusively: ACRA, SAA, and SHA surface different segments of the field.
  • Ignoring the full notice: board summaries can omit required materials or conditions that affect your decision.

If you are searching outside the United States

The sources above are U.S.-focused professional associations, and the visible examples are chiefly U.S. openings. They do not establish a complete international directory. Outside the United States, add your national archaeology association, regional heritage agency, government hiring portal, and local employers to the same verification workflow. Confirm work authorization, local credentials, language requirements, and country-specific employment rules directly with the hiring organization.

A final pre-application checklist

  • The employer’s page still shows the position as open.
  • You know the closing date or understand that it is open until filled.
  • The employment type, duration, location, travel, and field conditions fit your circumstances.
  • Compensation is understood as hourly or salaried and includes any stated per diem, lodging, travel, and benefits.
  • You meet the listed education, experience, technical, license, and physical requirements.
  • Your resume and every requested supporting document are ready in the required format.
  • You have saved the employer’s version of the description and the correct application route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an account to look for archaeology jobs?

SAA describes account-based tools such as resume posting, applications, and job matches. You can still use ACRA and SHA listings as discovery sources, then follow the employer’s application instructions; account requirements can differ by site.

Are the salaries shown on ACRA listings typical for archaeology?

No. ACRA’s policy requires compensation information on new posts, but each figure belongs to a specific vacancy and its conditions. It is not a profession-wide wage statistic.

What should I do when a board listing has no closing date?

Open the employer’s original notice and confirm whether it is still accepting applications or is marked open until filled. Contact the employer if the status remains unclear.
