Start with the old Galaxy phone if you still have it: check Gallery, My Files and their Trash folders. If the photos were synced to OneDrive, open OneDrive directly—the Samsung Gallery integration ended on September 30, 2026, but existing cloud copies remain there. Then check the relevant cloud account and any backup that may contain the pictures. These routes cover files still on the phone, hidden or misplaced images, cloud copies, deleted items still in Trash, and prior backups; they do not guarantee recovery of photos deleted everywhere.

Start by identifying where the photos may be

Before resetting, trading in or changing phones, work out which device and accounts were involved. An old photo might still be stored locally, tucked into a folder or hidden album, synced to a cloud account, waiting in a Trash or Recycle bin, or included in a previous backup. Those locations have different access and restore steps.

  • Can the old phone still turn on, and can you unlock it?
  • Which Samsung account, Microsoft account or Google account did you use? They may not be the same account.
  • Do you want to view the photo, restore a deleted item, or make a separate copy before changing devices?

Do not assume a cloud or device backup contains a particular image. Confirm that the photo is present before deleting anything or resetting a phone.

Look on the old Galaxy phone first

Check Gallery albums and folders

Open Gallery and review both Pictures and Albums. Look in Downloads and other relevant folders, not just the main picture view. If you can find the image in My Files but not in Gallery, check whether its folder or album is hidden. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking hidden files and the Trash folders in Gallery and My Files. See Samsung’s troubleshooting steps for pictures that do not display in Gallery.

Restore an item from Gallery Trash

  1. Open Gallery.
  2. Tap Menu, then Trash.
  3. Select the image and choose Restore.

Samsung says Gallery Trash keeps deleted files for 30 days; after that, they are permanently deleted from that Trash. The period is not a guarantee that a missing photo will be there. Menu labels can vary by device and software version. Samsung’s current instructions are in its Gallery Trash guide.

Check My Files and its Trash

If the photo was deleted or moved using the file manager, check My Files and its Trash as well. Gallery Trash and My Files Trash are distinct places to inspect; an image absent from one is not necessarily absent from the other. Samsung’s Gallery troubleshooting guide includes checks for Trash and hidden files.

Find photos previously synced from Samsung Gallery to OneDrive

Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026. Photos that had already been synced remain in the Microsoft account, but they no longer appear in Samsung Gallery through that discontinued integration. Open OneDrive and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the sync; Samsung says previously synced photos can be viewed or downloaded to a device there. Microsoft Support states: “Your OneDrive photos and videos are still accessible at onedrive.com or through all your devices where OneDrive is installed.” Read Microsoft’s OneDrive photo and file guidance and Samsung’s instructions for downloading photos previously synced with OneDrive.

If a cloud copy was deleted, check OneDrive’s Recycle bin in the app or on the web. Samsung says deleted OneDrive photos and videos are retained there for 93 days, after which they are no longer available there for restoration. This is separate from Gallery Trash on the phone. The 93-day period is Samsung’s stated retention period in its OneDrive photo guidance.

Continue backing up new photos

To back up new camera photos, use OneDrive Camera backup rather than expecting the ended Samsung Gallery integration to continue. In OneDrive, choose the correct Microsoft account, enable Camera backup, allow access to photos and videos, and check that the account has available storage. Follow Microsoft’s OneDrive setup guidance. This setting concerns new uploads; it does not move old photos out of an account you cannot access.

Check Samsung Cloud, Google backup and Gallery Cloud Sync

Restore an available Samsung Cloud backup

If you used Samsung Cloud backup, Samsung documents restoring a selected available backup through Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud > Restore data. Menu availability and labels can differ by device, software version and region. Check the backup contents and date before restoring; do not assume it includes the specific pictures. See Samsung’s backup and restore guidance.

Understand Google device-backup restoration

Samsung says Google device-backup restoration takes place during setup of a new or reset device. It is not a general way to browse an old device backup as a folder of pictures. Confirm that the relevant content was backed up and understand what the restore will do before resetting a device. Samsung’s backup and restore guidance describes the documented restore paths.

Do not confuse Gallery Cloud Sync with Google Photos

Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync with Google applies to media synced through that feature and to device folders selected for sync; it does not make every item in a Google Photos library browseable from Samsung Gallery. Synced deletion and restoration can affect both apps, so check the sync behavior before deleting or moving files. See Google’s Gallery Cloud Sync help page.

Copy accessible photos before changing phones

If you can still open or locate the images, make a separate copy before resetting, trading in or replacing the phone. Samsung documents several transfer routes. Compatibility and menu availability vary by phone, operating system, cable or adapter, and destination computer or storage device.

  • Computer: Transfer files over USB to a Windows PC or Mac using a compatible cable and the phone’s available transfer options.
  • Another phone: Use Smart Switch to transfer supported content to a compatible device.
  • Nearby device: Use Quick Share for Gallery media when supported.
  • USB storage: Use My Files to copy accessible files to a compatible USB OTG drive. Check the phone’s USB support and the drive or adapter compatibility before relying on this route.

These methods preserve or transfer files that remain accessible; external storage cannot retrieve a photo permanently deleted from the phone and with no surviving copy. Samsung describes transfer and backup options in its backup and restore guidance and USB OTG storage instructions.

If the photo is missing from every location

Check the phone’s Gallery and My Files locations, each relevant Trash or Recycle bin, the correct cloud accounts and any available backups. Samsung’s documented recovery routes cover items still in those bins or present in an existing backup. They do not establish a dependable way to retrieve a photo permanently deleted from all relevant Trash locations when no other copy or backup exists. Avoid resetting or wiping a device until you have checked the locations that may still contain the image.
