No retailer is consistently cheapest or best for every category. Prices, inventory, promotions, delivery charges and marketplace sellers change, so a reliable comparison is a dated, like-for-like check rather than a permanent ranking.

Which shops are the main alternatives to Argos?
Argos is unusual because it combines a broad catalogue with local collection and fast availability on many products. An alternative may beat it on one part of the experience—range, appliance delivery, installation, after-sales support or a particular price—without being better at everything. Start with the category and the meaning of “deal” in your case.

What Which? survey results actually tell you
Which? publishes customer survey results for retailer categories. The scores measure respondents’ experience of that retailer in the survey, not a laboratory test of every product, a guarantee of reliability or a live price comparison. The technology table also separates value, buying service, product quality, range, website or app, delivery and after-sales or returns. A shopper who cares most about delivery may therefore reach a different conclusion from someone who prioritises range or value.

In Which?’s described home-appliance survey, John Lewis scored 88%. AO scored 85% and was identified as a recommended provider, alongside Euronics at 85% and Lakeland at 82%. These are survey-specific figures from the reported period; they do not establish today’s stock, delivery fee or price for a particular appliance.
Choose by what you are buying
Technology and electricals
For a laptop, phone, television, console or small electrical item, begin with Currys, John Lewis and Amazon UK, then use Argos as a fourth price and availability check. Search by the manufacturer’s exact model number rather than a shortened product name. Retailers can use similar titles for different storage capacities, screen sizes, regional variants or bundled accessories.

On Amazon UK, inspect the named seller and the fulfilment information before comparing a listing with a high-street retailer. The seller determines the invoice, warranty contact and sometimes the returns process. A lower marketplace price is not like-for-like if it is a different model, an imported version or missing the manufacturer’s UK warranty.
Currys is relevant when you want a physical store, delivery options or help with a technology purchase. Its price promise says it can match a UK retailer’s price, including an offer-code discount, when the products are available and ready for delivery under its conditions. Confirm the current eligibility rules and claim process before relying on the promise.
John Lewis combines technology range with a service-led proposition. Its price-match policy is limited to named eligible competitors and excludes certain types of promotion. Check that the competitor, product, stock status and offer all qualify; a voucher, bundle or limited promotion may be excluded even when the headline price looks lower.

Large appliances
For washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and cookers, include AO, John Lewis and Currys in the first comparison. The cheapest product price can become the most expensive choice if the retailer cannot deliver through a narrow doorway, connect the appliance, take away the old one or provide a convenient slot.

Record the appliance’s packed and unpacked dimensions, required clearances, door-opening direction, water and waste connections, electrical supply and ventilation requirements. Measure the route from the vehicle or communal entrance to the final position, including stairs and lifts. Ask the retailer which access restrictions can cause a failed delivery and what charges apply for each optional service; the current charge and availability are not fixed across retailers.
AO is especially relevant to appliance shoppers, while John Lewis can suit buyers who put weight on service and support. Currys is useful when you are already comparing electricals or want to combine an appliance purchase with other technology. Treat the Which? scores as service evidence from a survey, not as a guarantee that a particular installation team or delivery slot will meet your needs.
Home goods and bulky items
John Lewis, Amazon UK and Very cover many home categories, but the right specialist can depend on the product. For furniture, bedding, lighting or storage, compare material, finish, dimensions, weight limits and assembly requirements—not just the photograph and headline price.
Bulky-item returns need special attention. Check whether the retailer collects an unwanted item, who pays for collection, how damage must be reported and whether packaging must be retained. A low delivery price does not necessarily include room-of-choice delivery, assembly or removal of packaging.
Very has broad electrical and home-goods coverage, but a current offer should be checked on the live product page. Confirm stock, dispatch timing, delivery cost and the returns route for the exact item before treating it as an Argos substitute.

How to make an accurate like-for-like price comparison
Use this sequence whenever two retailers appear to sell the same deal.
- Capture the exact identity. Copy the manufacturer model or SKU, capacity, colour, generation, storage size and included accessories. If there is no matching identifier, treat the products as different until the specifications prove otherwise.
- Check the seller. On a marketplace listing, record the seller’s name and whether the retailer or a third party fulfils the order. Compare the same seller terms, not merely the same product title.
- Verify stock and delivery readiness. A displayed price is not equivalent if one item is available for immediate dispatch and the other is back-ordered, collection-only or restricted to a different postcode. Currys’ price-match conditions, for example, make availability and readiness for delivery material.
- Add every mandatory cost. Include delivery, timed-slot fees, installation, connection, recycling, old-appliance removal, assembly and any required accessories. Use the final checkout total, not a banner price.
- Compare warranty and returns. Note the warranty length and provider, the deadline and method for reporting faults, who pays return carriage and whether a marketplace seller handles the claim.
- Check promotion conditions. Read the offer’s end date, code requirement, minimum spend, payment restriction, bundle requirement and quantity limit. A price that depends on a code or membership is not comparable with an unconditional price unless you qualify for it.
- Record the result. Save the product page or write down the date, price, stock message and delivery estimate. Deals can change before you complete checkout.
When price matching is useful—and when it is not
John Lewis
John Lewis names the competitors it will consider for a price match and excludes some promotion types. The policy therefore requires more than showing a cheaper search result: the product, seller, stock position and offer must satisfy its current terms. A clearance price, member-only voucher, bundle or other excluded promotion may not qualify. Read the live policy and follow its stated submission route before ordering.
Currys
Currys states that it can match UK retailer prices, including prices reached with an offer code, where both products are available and ready for delivery under its conditions. Confirm the exact model and all qualifying details, then use the retailer’s current claim instructions. The promise does not remove the need to compare delivery, installation, returns or warranty support.
Why a matched price may still be the wrong deal
A price match equalises one number. It does not equalise delivery slots, old-appliance collection, installation quality, fault handling, seller identity or the time required to return a bulky item. For a large appliance, a slightly higher total can be rational if it includes the service you otherwise would have to buy separately.
Delivery, installation and after-sales checks
Before paying, answer these questions for the exact product and postcode:
- What is the earliest available delivery date, and can you choose a timed slot?
- Is delivery to the room of choice, kerbside or a collection point?
- For an appliance, are unboxing, positioning, connection, testing and removal of packaging included or optional?
- Can the retailer remove and recycle the old appliance, and what preparation is required?
- What happens if the delivery crew cannot gain access or the item is damaged?
- How do you report a fault after the first few days, and is the retailer or manufacturer your first contact?
- Who pays for collection if you cancel or return a heavy item?
Which? includes buying service, delivery and after-sales or returns in its retailer comparisons because these steps affect the real cost of a purchase. Use those dimensions to match your priorities instead of relying on a single overall score.

How to find genuine current deals
Retailer deal pages are useful for seeing the offers available now, but they are time-sensitive. Check the stated end date, stock count or availability message, eligible models, seller, delivery charge and any code or account requirement. Do not assume that a search result proves a retailer runs the same sale every year; the available evidence does not establish a reliable annual sales calendar.

A “was” price, percentage saving or countdown clock is not a substitute for checking the model’s recent prices, included services and return terms. If the product is likely to sell out, decide in advance which service or specification you will not compromise to chase a small saving.

Choose Currys when technology choice and store support matter
Currys is a practical first stop for computers, phones, televisions, gaming equipment and appliances. Compare its offer with John Lewis and Amazon UK using the exact SKU. Its UK-retailer price-match promise can be valuable when another retailer has a qualifying lower price, including an offer-code price, but availability and delivery readiness remain conditions.
Choose AO when the purchase is a major appliance
AO belongs in the shortlist for refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers and cookers. Focus on delivery access, installation, recycling and support rather than assuming the product-page price is the final cost. Its 85% Which? home-appliance customer score is survey evidence from the reported period, not a guarantee for a particular order.
Choose John Lewis when service and returns carry extra weight
John Lewis has the highest technology customer score in the cited 2026 Which? table, 89% from 681 respondents, and scored 88% in the described home-appliance survey. Those results make it a sensible service-led comparison, especially for expensive or complicated purchases. Its price-match policy has a defined competitor list and promotion exclusions, so verify eligibility instead of assuming every lower price will be matched.

Amazon UK can expose a wide selection of technology, household products and accessories. The 2026 Which? technology table gave Amazon a 79% customer score from 1,270 respondents, the same overall score reported for Argos in that table. Listing-level checks are essential: seller, fulfilment, model variant, warranty and returns can differ within the same search results.
Choose Very when its current home or electrical offer fits
Very is another place to check electricals and home goods. Because offers and delivery terms change, verify the live price, stock, dimensions, delivery conditions and returns for the exact item. Use it as a category-specific comparison rather than assuming its broad range makes it the best option for every purchase.

Comparing a product name instead of a model
Two 55-inch televisions or two 9 kg washing machines can have different panels, programmes, energy ratings or connectivity. Fix this by matching the model code and specification sheet.
Ignoring marketplace sellers
A marketplace listing may have different warranty and returns responsibilities from a retailer-sold listing. Fix this by recording the seller and fulfilment details before comparing prices.

Delivery, connection, recycling and old-unit removal can change the total. Fix this by adding each service at checkout and confirming access requirements.
Assuming a price promise is automatic
Both John Lewis and Currys attach conditions to price matching. Fix this by checking competitor eligibility, stock, delivery readiness, exclusions and the claim deadline in the current policy.
Treating a survey score as a product guarantee
Which? scores describe surveyed customer experience for a retailer category and period. Fix this by using the scores to choose where to investigate, then checking the specific product, service and terms yourself.
Relying on an old sale page
Deals expire and stock changes. Fix this by checking the live product page, date, seller, stock and checkout total immediately before purchase.

A practical buying workflow
- Define the job. Write down the product type, essential specification, maximum total cost, acceptable delivery window and services you need.
- Build a three-retailer shortlist. Use Currys, John Lewis and Amazon UK for technology; AO, John Lewis and Currys for large appliances; and add Very for relevant home or electrical goods.
- Match the SKU. Remove listings that differ in model, capacity, colour, region, accessories or seller terms.
- Price the complete order. Add delivery and every required service, then compare warranty and returns.
- Apply a price promise if appropriate. Check the current John Lewis or Currys conditions before submitting a claim.
- Recheck immediately before payment. Confirm stock, delivery date, promotion validity and final total; save the order details and policy information.
This approach gives you a defensible alternative to Argos without pretending that one retailer wins every category. The right choice is the retailer whose exact product, total cost and service conditions best fit the purchase you are making.
