Start with the product name: four different purchases
Nintendo’s catalog uses similar names for content that has very different purposes. The original Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the base role-playing game for Nintendo Switch. It is the item you need if you want the main adventure and do not already own it.

Torna – The Golden Country is a separate story release set 500 years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It can be sold as a standalone physical or digital product, but it is not the base game. The Expansion Pass is downloadable add-on content for owners of Xenoblade Chronicles 2; it includes the Torna story content along with other packs. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack is another separate offering. It upgrades an eligible game on Nintendo Switch 2 and should not be mistaken for a copy of the original game.

Read the complete product title and the “included content” section on the listing before checkout. A result that contains “Torna,” “Expansion Pass,” “DLC,” or “upgrade pack” may not include the base cartridge or base-game license.

Where to buy Xenoblade Chronicles 2 digitally
For a digital copy, use the Nintendo eShop on a supported Switch system or the Nintendo Store listing available for your territory. Search for the full title, then open the product page rather than buying from a search-result snippet. The page should identify Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as the game, not Torna, an Expansion Pass, or an upgrade.
- Open the store for the account that will play the game. Nintendo purchases are tied to a Nintendo Account. Confirm the account profile and country or region before selecting Buy.
- Read the item type. Look for wording such as “full game” or the base-game title. If the page says “DLC,” “Expansion Pass,” “Torna,” or “upgrade,” it is not the base purchase.
- Check console compatibility. Confirm whether the page is for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or an upgrade pack. Do not assume that a Switch 2 Edition upgrade includes the underlying game.
- Review the final price and terms. Prices and taxes vary by region and can change. Confirm the currency, payment total, and refund conditions shown by Nintendo before completing the transaction.
- Download from the purchasing account. After payment, open the eShop with the same account and check the redownload or software library area if the title does not appear immediately.
Nintendo’s support guidance also refers to Nintendo Store availability for the Expansion Pass and Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. Store catalogs differ by country, so an item visible in one region may not be listed in another.

Buying a physical copy: new versus used
New physical copies
A new cartridge listing should state “Xenoblade Chronicles 2” and identify the Nintendo Switch game. Confirm that the box contains a game cartridge, not only a download code or an accessory bundle. Check the seller name, dispatch location, condition (“new” versus “opened”), return policy, delivery estimate, and the region shown on the listing. Stock and prices are volatile, so treat an old search result or cached price as unconfirmed until the retailer page shows it.
Used physical copies
Used listings require extra questions because included paper inserts and one-time codes may be missing or consumed. Ask the seller for a photograph of the cartridge, case, and every insert. For a standard Xenoblade Chronicles 2 cartridge, verify that the cartridge itself is included and that the listing is not for an Expansion Pass code alone.
For a used standalone Torna copy, ask specifically whether the Expansion Pass packs 1–4 code is still in the case and has never been redeemed. Nintendo states that the standalone Torna release includes this code, but a second-hand seller cannot guarantee that an old code remains valid unless its status is confirmed. A missing, scratched, obscured, or already redeemed code reduces the value of the package even if the Torna cartridge or game card works.

- Have the seller confirm whether the code has ever been entered on a Nintendo Account.
- Read the marketplace’s return rules for items with redeemed or missing digital content.
- Keep the listing, messages, and photographs until you have tested the purchase.
Does Torna include the DLC?
Yes, but the answer depends on which Torna product you mean. Nintendo says the standalone Torna release contains the same Torna story content found in the Expansion Pass and includes a code for Expansion Pass DLC packs 1–4. Those four packs are playable in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 only. The code does not turn Torna into a copy of the base game, and Torna does not remove the need to own Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if you want to use those packs there.
The Expansion Pass is the direct digital route for an owner of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Buying the standalone Torna release is a different route: you receive the Torna story as its own release and, when the included code is unused, a way to claim packs 1–4 for the base game. With a used copy, treat the code as uncertain until the seller proves it is unused or the retailer provides a return remedy.
What the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade changes
Nintendo documents a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack separately from the base game and the Expansion Pass. Confirm that the listing is an upgrade for a game you already own, not a complete game purchase. The upgrade page lists 4K resolution in TV mode and full HD handheld resolution at 60 frames per second, along with additional content. Those technical features apply to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition configuration; they are not specifications for every original-Switch listing.

Before purchasing, check the exact console named on the page, the Nintendo Account that owns the underlying game, and the store region. If you are buying a used cartridge, verify that the game is eligible for the stated upgrade and that the upgrade is not being represented as a physical cartridge. Digital entitlements can also vary by territory and may be withdrawn or changed, so rely on the current Nintendo Store or eShop page for your location.

Physical and digital purchases have different risks. A cartridge is a tangible item that can be inspected and returned under the seller’s policy; a digital purchase is tied to an account and normally cannot be transferred to another account. Confirm the console family, store country, language information shown by the seller, and any region statement before paying. Specific regional compatibility for every physical listing is not established by the available product documentation, so ask the retailer when the listing is unclear.
For DLC, use the Nintendo Account that purchased the content. Nintendo’s support instructions direct users troubleshooting access to open the eShop with the account used for the DLC purchase. If another profile on the console cannot see the add-on, first check the purchasing account’s redownloadable software and downloadable-content sections before buying again.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Name: Is the product title exactly Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if you want the base game?
- Contents: Does the page say full game, Torna story, Expansion Pass, or Switch 2 upgrade?
- Format: Is it a cartridge, game card, download code, or account-bound digital purchase?
- Console: Does the listing identify Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, and do you own the required hardware?
- Region: Does the store country and any physical-region information match your account and console?
- Used Torna code: Is the packs 1–4 code physically present, unused, and covered by a return policy?
- Seller: Are the seller identity, condition, shipping, stock, and returns clearly stated?
- Price: Is the amount current on the live page, including tax and delivery, rather than copied from an old listing?
Common buying mistakes and fixes
You bought Torna when you wanted the main game
Check the order title and return window immediately. Torna is a separate story release and does not supply the base Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game. If the seller allows returns, request one before opening or redeeming anything.
You bought an Expansion Pass without owning the game
The Expansion Pass is add-on content. Confirm ownership of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the same Nintendo Account, then open the eShop with that account and check the downloadable-content or redownload area. If the base game is absent, you still need to purchase it separately.
A used Torna code does not work
Do not repeatedly enter a code or buy a second copy before documenting the problem. Photograph the code card, contact the seller through the marketplace, and use the stated return process. Nintendo’s documentation establishes that the standalone release includes a code, but it does not guarantee that a code in a used listing remains unused.
The Switch 2 listing seems to be only an upgrade
Read the product label for “upgrade pack” and verify the required base game. An upgrade pack is not a substitute for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. If you need the game itself, return to the full-game listing and check the included software before checkout.
Which purchase fits your goal?
- You have no game yet: Buy the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 base game first.
- You own the base game and want more content: Compare the Expansion Pass with the standalone Torna release; the pass is downloadable, while standalone Torna is its own release and includes a packs 1–4 code when that code is unused.
- You want only the prequel story: Torna can be purchased as a standalone story, but it does not replace the base game.
- You already own the game and have Nintendo Switch 2: Review the separately listed Switch 2 Edition upgrade and its regional requirements.
- You are buying second-hand: Prioritize a seller with clear photographs, code-status answers, and a usable return policy over a slightly lower unverified price.
