For almost every new buyer, choose System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. Nightdive Studios currently lists it for Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle, Epic Games, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. The remaster launched for PC on June 26, 2025, and the publisher’s delisting announcement says buyers of the remaster also receive the 1999 original. The standalone 1999 PC release was removed from sale on October 10, 2025, so it is no longer the normal new-purchase route.
Your best storefront depends on your platform, regional price, refund rules, offline-access preferences, controller setup and where your co-op friends play. Live prices and catalog access can change by country, so verify the checkout page before paying.

Which edition should a new buyer choose?
Choose the 25th Anniversary Remaster for a first purchase
The remaster is the edition Nightdive currently presents for sale across PC and consoles. It is therefore the straightforward choice if you do not already own the game and want an officially supported current release. It also avoids hunting for a standalone copy that has been removed from ordinary PC storefront sales.
You receive the 1999 game with the remaster
Nightdive’s October 10, 2025 delisting announcement states that the original System Shock 2 (1999) was delisted from PC platforms and that owners of the remaster receive the original game as well. That makes the remaster the practical way for a new customer to obtain both the updated release and the classic version. The statement concerns access for remaster owners; it does not mean every old account automatically receives an upgrade.
Do not treat the old standalone PC release as a normal new option
The 1999 standalone PC listing was removed from sale on October 10, 2025, according to Nightdive’s announcement. Existing owners may retain access under their platform’s account rules, but a reader starting from scratch should not rely on finding a legitimate, currently listed standalone purchase. Avoid unofficial download sites and unverified keys: the official sources identify the remaster, not third-party resale listings, as the current route.

Special GOG pre-order offer
GOG’s release announcement says people who pre-ordered System Shock: Enhanced Edition on GOG receive the remaster for free. This is a specific pre-order benefit. It should not be generalized into a free upgrade for everyone who owns the original System Shock 2, a boxed copy or another digital edition.
How to pick the right PC storefront
There is no verified universal cheapest store in the available information. Prices, discounts and taxes vary by country and change over time. Make the decision using the terms shown for your own account rather than an old price screenshot.
1. Start with your platform and friends
If you intend to play co-op, begin with the platform your group actually uses. Nightdive advertises cross-play co-op, while Steam lists online co-op, LAN co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Those are published features, not a promise that every combination of storefront, console, network configuration or mod will work identically. Confirm the current platform-specific details before buying separate copies for a group.

- System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster [Anniversary Edition] includes: >Base Game - Booklet Deluxe Folding Box (with Shodan Lenticular Card inside) Soundtrack CD Double-Sided Poste
- System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster by Nightdive Studios brings to you the modernized remaster of the FPS/RPG classic, featuring Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer and more.
- Its the year 2114 and as you awake from cryo sleep on the FTL ship Von Braun, you are unable to remember who or where you are and something has gone terribly wrong. Hybrid mutants and deadly robots roam the halls while the cries from the remaining crew reverberate through the cold hull of the ship. SHODAN, a rogue AI bent on the destruction of mankind has taken over and its up to you to stop her.
- Delve through the corridors of the derelict ship Von Braun and immerse yourself in the story rich atmosphere and environments. Explore deck by deck and unravel the horrifying fate of the Von Braun and her crew.
2. Compare the final regional checkout price
Open the game’s current listing in your country, proceed far enough to see currency, tax and any discount, and compare the final total. A temporary sale on one store can reverse the usual price relationship. Do not copy a price from another region; currency conversion, local taxes and licensing can produce a different amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Check refund rules before purchase
Refund eligibility is controlled by each storefront and can depend on play time, ownership duration, bundle contents and local law. Read the policy linked from the store you choose, especially if you are testing performance on older hardware or a handheld. The supplied official sources do not establish a single refund period that applies to all four PC stores or the consoles.
4. Decide how you want to install and launch
Store ecosystems differ in launcher behavior, account requirements, cloud saves and offline access. If offline installation matters, inspect the current store description and help page rather than assuming that one PC storefront behaves like another. The available evidence does not verify permanent DRM or offline terms for every listing, so those details must be checked at purchase time.

- System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster on a region-free physical cartridge
- Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer.
- 50 Trophies to unlock
- Enhanced Characters, Weapon Models and Animations
- Optimized Controller support
5. Read the current multiplayer and mod notes
Nightdive describes mod support and cross-play co-op, and Steam lists single-player, online and LAN co-op plus cross-platform multiplayer. Mods can still vary in quality, version compatibility and multiplayer behavior. If you plan a heavily modded co-op campaign, have every player use compatible game versions and the same required mod files; the publisher’s feature description is not a compatibility guarantee for individual community projects.
What the remaster includes and what remains uncertain
Single-player and co-op modes
The Steam listing identifies single-player, online co-op, LAN co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. That gives you several ways to play, from a solo run to a local-network session or an online group. Actual latency, matchmaking success, firewall settings and platform-account requirements depend on your network and setup, so treat the store labels as capabilities rather than expected performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Mod support
Nightdive advertises mod support. Before installing a mod, check its stated remaster version, installation method, dependencies and whether it supports multiplayer. Keep an unmodified game profile or backup of saves so you can return to the standard build if a mod causes crashes or prevents a co-op connection.

PC release timing
The PC release date was June 26, 2025, as shown on the Steam listing. Nightdive’s later patch notes document the PC and console rollout, but they do not establish that every platform receives identical updates at exactly the same time. Check the platform’s own update history when troubleshooting a version mismatch.
Physical editions
The official buying page lists digital storefronts and does not list a physical remaster edition. The available sources also do not establish whether a limited or region-specific boxed release exists. Treat the digital listings above as the confirmed routes, and do not assume that a marketplace listing is an official current edition without publisher or platform confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying on each platform: a practical checklist
PC
- Choose Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle or Epic Games Store based on the launcher and account ecosystem you already use.
- Open the current regional listing and verify that the product name is System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.
- Check the stated operating-system, storage, controller and network requirements against your computer.
- Read the current refund and offline-access terms for that store.
- If friends will join, confirm the multiplayer labels and agree on an unmodded or shared-mod setup before starting a campaign.
Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch
- Open your console’s official store while signed into the account and region that will own the game.
- Confirm the platform version, price, download size and any online-service requirement shown on the live listing.
- Check which platform your co-op group uses; advertised cross-play does not remove platform-account or network requirements.
- Install updates before inviting friends, then test a short session before committing to a long campaign.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Searching only for “System Shock 2 (1999).” That standalone PC listing was delisted in October 2025. Search for the full remaster title instead.
- Assuming an old-owner upgrade exists. The documented free offer is for GOG pre-orders of System Shock: Enhanced Edition; it is not a general entitlement for all original-game owners.
- Assuming every store has the same price. Regional pricing and temporary sales differ. Compare the final checkout total in your currency.
- Assuming cross-play means universal compatibility. The publisher advertises cross-play, but platform versions, updates, network conditions and mods can affect a specific session.
- Buying an unverified key or download. Use the publisher-listed storefronts so the license and update path are tied to an official platform account.
- Expecting a boxed copy because the game is 25 years old. The official page confirms digital stores, not a universal physical release.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have never owned the game | 25th Anniversary Remaster on your preferred platform | It is the current edition listed by Nightdive and includes access to the 1999 original according to the delisting announcement. |
| You want the original experience as well as the updated release | 25th Anniversary Remaster | Remaster owners are stated to receive the 1999 game. |
| You pre-ordered System Shock: Enhanced Edition on GOG | Check your GOG library before buying | GOG says eligible pre-order customers receive the remaster at no extra charge. |
| Your friends already play on one platform | Buy on that platform when possible | It minimizes account, update and voice-chat friction; verify current cross-play details if using different platforms. |
| You are choosing between PC stores | Use the store with the best current regional terms | No single cheapest or universally best storefront is established; compare price, refunds, offline access and ecosystem. |
| You are looking for a physical collector copy | Verify any listing independently | The official sources confirm digital routes but do not establish a current universal boxed edition. |
Bottom line for a 2026 purchase
Buy System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster from the official PC or console storefront that fits your hardware and social group. It is the currently listed edition, it launched on PC on June 26, 2025, and the publisher says it includes the 1999 original even though that standalone PC release was delisted on October 10, 2025. Choose among Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle, Epic Games, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch by checking the live regional price, refund policy, offline terms and multiplayer details at checkout. If you pre-ordered System Shock: Enhanced Edition on GOG, check your library for the documented complimentary remaster before paying again.
