Which online gold coin dealers are worth comparing?
CNBC Select’s 2026 review assigns different dealers to different use cases. It says it evaluated a dozen vendors, but that is the outlet’s review scope—not a comprehensive audit of every online seller. The categories below are editorial picks, not guarantees of the best price or experience for your order.

How to compare prices for the same gold coin
Match the coin and its size
Compare like with like: the same coin, weight and condition. American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs are familiar sovereign-mint examples. Kitco describes Eagles as 22-karat and Maple Leafs as 24-karat. A standard one-ounce Gold Eagle weighs more than one troy ounce in total because it contains alloy, but it still has one troy ounce of pure gold. Compare premium and full checkout cost
A dealer’s coin price generally reflects the live gold spot price plus a premium. The premium can reflect minting, distribution, supply and demand. Add shipping, insurance, taxes and other charges that apply to your order; the lowest displayed coin price may not produce the lowest delivered total.

Prices change with the market and inventory. A meaningful comparison requires quotes for the same coin and size, captured at the same time and with the same payment and delivery assumptions. Do not rely on a fixed premium comparison unless those conditions match.
What to check before placing an order
Delivery, insurance and location
Read the seller’s current shipping policy and the checkout terms for your destination. As an example of how terms vary by dealer and location, Kitco’s U.S. and Canada policy, accessed October 7, 2026, lists standard shipping at $15 USD/CAD and free standard shipping on qualifying orders of at least $5,000 USD/CAD. It lists insurance at 0.65% of metal value, with Washington at 0.80% and Texas at 0.99%. Kitco gives an ordinary delivery estimate of two to five business days and says rare postal shipments can take longer. Buyback process and payout
If you may sell the coin later, find out how the dealer sets its bid, which products it accepts, who pays for shipping, whether shipments are insured, and when payment is issued. Kitco describes price locking at checkout or after it receives a shipment, insured shipping options, and payment typically processed one to two business days after receipt and verification. Ownership, possession and storage
Buying a coin for delivery is different from buying a storage or digital-ownership product. Kitco advertises both physical delivery and storage or digital options. Bullion purchase or collectible coin?
Bullion pricing is primarily tied to gold content and the coin’s premium. A collectible coin may also carry value tied to rarity, condition or design, but paying extra for those features does not mean you will recover that premium when reselling. If your goal is gold exposure rather than collecting, do not treat a high-priced collectible as a low-cost bullion substitute.

Does U.S. Mint authorized-purchaser status settle the choice?
No. The U.S. Mint’s list can help you check whether a business is a bullion authorized purchaser, but the Mint explicitly cautions: “Please note, not all of these authorized purchasers sell bullion products to consumers.” It also says Mint bullion coins are widely available through online and physical coin and precious-metal dealers. A practical comparison checklist
- Choose the exact coin, size and condition you want, and compare that same item across sellers.
- Record the quote and checkout total at the same time, using the same payment method and delivery destination.
- Include shipping, insurance, taxes and other applicable charges rather than comparing coin prices alone.
- Check delivery estimates, geographic restrictions and what happens if a shipment is delayed or lost.
- Read buyback terms before buying if resale matters to you, including accepted items, pricing, shipping and payout timing.
- For an IRA or storage product, compare account requirements, custody and fees separately from home-delivery coin purchases.
