The fastest method is to search official store locators with your city, state, or ZIP code, then call the location before driving to confirm hours, floor inventory, delivery, and return terms.
If the store has shut down permanently rather than simply closed for the evening, the same process works. Search by category and location instead of assuming that the retailer’s absence means furniture is unavailable nearby.

- Record the current hours and phone number. Hours and inventory can change by location, so treat a search result as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Those categories are useful even when you do not choose either retailer, because they show how to look for alternatives after a familiar store closes.

When the store is closed for the evening
If “closes” means the shop has ended its daily hours, check the listing’s current schedule before making another trip. A furniture showroom may have different weekday, weekend, or holiday hours, and a listing that appears in a search engine can lag behind a location’s current schedule.
Use the next available opening strategically
- Call during the listed business hours and ask for the furniture department or sales floor.
- Ask whether the item can be placed on hold until you arrive.
- For a large purchase, confirm whether delivery appointments are scheduled by the showroom or a separate carrier.
- If you need a same-day purchase, ask whether the item is physically in stock rather than merely orderable.
This approach prevents a wasted drive when a store is technically open but does not have the model, finish, or size you need.
Find another nearby showroom
A showroom is the closest substitute for a closed regular store when you want to sit on a sofa, compare finishes, or inspect construction in person. Start with official locators for retailers that operate in your region, then compare the locations by distance and hours.
What to verify at a showroom
- Floor model: Is the exact collection, color, configuration, or mattress size displayed?

A low price is useful only if the condition, transport, and return terms fit your situation. Keep the receipt and any written condition notes.

How to work with an independent dealer
- Enter your location in the manufacturer’s dealer search.
- Call the listed dealer and identify the collection or product number you want.
- Ask whether the dealer is authorized for the item and whether it is currently on the floor.
- Request the dealer’s current price, order timeline, delivery area, and return policy in writing.
New Classic specifically advises shoppers to call ahead to learn what is on the floor and what can be ordered. That advice is important because a dealer listing confirms a sales relationship, not necessarily immediate stock.
Search used-furniture outlets
Used-furniture outlets can solve two problems at once: the original store is unavailable, and you need a piece without waiting for a new order. CORT Furniture Outlet describes its used pieces as refurbished, inspected, and graded. CORT also advertises savings of up to 70% off new retail prices for previously leased furniture; that is the outlet’s current advertising claim, not an independent market-wide comparison.
Evaluate a used piece systematically
- Inspect structure: Sit on seating, open drawers, test hinges, and check that legs and frames do not wobble.
- Inspect surfaces: Look for stains, odors, scratches, fading, pet damage, and repaired areas under strong light.
- Measure twice: Confirm width, depth, height, doorway clearance, stair turns, and elevator capacity.
- Ask about history: Find out whether the item was previously leased, displayed, repaired, or stored.
- Document the condition: Photograph existing marks and keep the item description with your receipt.
CORT states that outlet purchases may be returned within 14 days with a receipt. Because policies can change and may vary by location or item, verify the current terms before payment and ask whether delivery fees are refundable.
Try thrift stores and outlet sections
Thrift stores broaden your search beyond furniture specialists. Goodwill Industries International says it supports a network of 150 local Goodwill organizations, so availability and policies are determined locally. Its locator includes filters for retail and outlet locations, which can help you distinguish a conventional donation store from an outlet-style operation.
Make a thrift-store trip efficient
- Use the locator to identify several branches rather than relying on one shop.
- Call to ask whether the location regularly receives furniture and what time large-item donations are processed.
- Bring measurements, a tape measure, and a vehicle or delivery plan.
- Inspect for stability, pests, smoke odor, water damage, and missing hardware.
- Ask whether the sale is final and whether the store offers loading assistance.
Thrift inventory changes quickly. A branch may have several tables one day and none the next, so a phone call can save time but cannot guarantee that a particular item will still be available when you arrive.

Rather than asking only “Do you have sofas?” provide the details the employee needs to check the floor and the stock system:
“I’m looking for a [type of furniture] in approximately [dimensions], in [material or color]. Is that exact item on the floor today? If not, can you order it, and what delivery window and return terms apply? Is the listed price for a new, displayed, returned, or used piece?”

For an outlet or thrift store, add: “Are there any visible defects or missing parts, and can I inspect the item before paying?” For a dealer, name the manufacturer, collection, or product number so the employee can distinguish a real match from a similar item.
Plan for transport and delivery
A local source is only useful if the furniture can reach your home. Before committing, measure the item and the route into your home, including the entrance, hallway, staircase, elevator, and turning space. Ask whether the seller delivers to your ZIP code, how soon the next appointment is available, and whether the crew carries the piece upstairs or leaves it at the threshold.
For used, outlet, and thrift purchases, clarify whether delivery is offered at all. If you are collecting the item yourself, confirm pickup hours, loading assistance, vehicle requirements, and the time allowed for collection. A bargain that requires an unsuitable vehicle or an expensive third-party carrier may not remain a bargain.

Start with the manufacturer’s authorized-dealer locator, then call dealers and showrooms with the product number. Ask whether the piece is on the floor or orderable; do not substitute a similar-looking item unless its dimensions and specifications work for your room.
You need furniture today
Prioritize showrooms that confirm floor stock, outlets, used-furniture outlets, and thrift stores. Confirm that the item can leave the premises immediately and arrange transportation before you pay.
You need the lowest stated price
Compare outlet, used, and thrift options, but compare the complete cost: item price, delivery, assembly, cleaning, repairs, and the consequences of a final-sale policy. CORT’s “up to 70% off new retail” statement applies to its previously leased furniture advertising; it does not establish that every item or every local outlet reaches that discount.
You need a specific condition standard
Choose a standard showroom or an outlet that provides a written condition description. For secondhand furniture, inspect personally and ask what “refurbished,” “inspected,” or a grade means at that location.
