For a store-wide DRM-free policy, GOG is the clearest choice. Its developer documentation says games released there cannot include DRM or copy protection, and offline-capable play should not depend on Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client, or an internet connection. itch.io and Humble Store also have DRM-free games, but the available evidence supports checking individual titles—not assuming every listing on either store is DRM-free.
How the stores compare
| Store | What is established | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| GOG | GOG’s developer documentation says games released on the store cannot include DRM or copy protection. Its distribution terms describe offline access for single-player content, with an exception for multiplayer and room for a game-specific distribution-form exception. See GOG Developer Docs and GOG Distribution Terms. | Online-only modes or services, operating-system support, and title-specific content or dependencies. |
| itch.io | PCGamingWiki’s community-maintained index snapshot dated October 6, 2026, flags 2,295 itch.io games as DRM-free. This is an index count, not an itch.io-wide promise. See PCGamingWiki’s list of DRM-free games. | Whether the specific game’s download runs independently of a launcher or account after download. |
| Humble Store | The same PCGamingWiki snapshot flags 1,264 Humble Store games as DRM-free and maintains a separate Humble list. A listing may instead provide a Steam key, or a key alongside a DRM-free download; the count does not mean every purchase is DRM-free. See PCGamingWiki’s list of DRM-free games and its Humble game list. | Confirm whether the offer includes a standalone download, a third-party key, or both. |
| Steam and other PC stores | No authoritative store-wide DRM policy is established here. A game being available on another store does not prove the version sold on Steam or elsewhere is DRM-free. | Check the individual game’s DRM, launcher, activation, and offline requirements against current primary information. |
The itch.io and Humble figures are third-party community-index totals for October 6, 2026, not audited or official store catalog counts. Catalogs and index entries can change, and a count cannot verify the current status of a particular game.

Why GOG is the clearest starting point
GOG states in its developer documentation, “GOG’s ‘DRM-Free’ philosophy means that games released on GOG can’t have any DRM/copy protection and should work in all possible scenarios, regardless of the result of GOG GALAXY authentication, GOG GALAXY client presence or Internet connection availability.” — GOG Developer Docs, “Porting Your Games from Steam to GOG.”

#1 Best Overall
- Explore the deadly, shadowed world of the assassin with new assassin Ezio
- Roam freely through the lush and dangerous world of Renaissance-era Italy

That policy is about access to the game, not a promise that every feature works offline. Multiplayer and other online services may still need a connection or account authentication. GOG’s terms also define offline access in relation to single-player content and allow for a game-specific distribution-form exception, so read the listing and relevant terms for the title you want.
What “DRM-free” does—and does not—tell you
DRM-free describes the absence of technical restrictions that control access, installation, copying, or activation. It does not automatically mean the game has no online features, that every edition runs on every computer, or that a store will provide the same download format for every purchase.

A game can be DRM-free for offline single-player play while still requiring internet access for multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, timed events, or other connected services. A product page may also offer a key for another platform rather than an independent installer. Verify the exact edition and its requirements instead of relying on the store name or a general label.

- Purchase format: Does the listing promise a DRM-free download, offer only a key for another platform, or include both?
- Launch and activation: Can the single-player game start without a store client or an online check after installation?
- Connected features: Which modes and services—such as multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, or timed events—need an account or internet connection?
- Files and future access: Can you download and keep an installer or backup copy? Check how updates and DLC are delivered as well.
- Compatibility: Confirm operating-system support, language options, patches, and any required dependencies for the version being sold.
For long-term access, keep a backup of downloaded installers when the store makes that possible. GOG explicitly describes backing up downloaded games and installing them again; an external drive is one optional place to keep a copy, not a requirement for buying or playing a DRM-free game. See GOG’s 2022 update.

Choosing a store for your priorities
- You want a clear store-wide commitment: Start with GOG, then check title-specific online features and compatibility.
- You want to browse indie titles: itch.io has DRM-free games, but treat the individual game page and download as the deciding evidence.
- You are considering a Humble listing: Inspect the purchase format carefully; a Steam key is not the same as a standalone DRM-free download.
- You are buying elsewhere: Verify the exact version’s DRM and offline behavior from current information about that game. Do not infer a store-wide policy from one title.
