What IKEA’s second-hand options cover
IKEA UK has two distinct routes. Its customer-to-customer Second-hand marketplace covers nearly all current and historic IKEA products, with exclusions including food, mattresses, kitchen appliances and products not made by IKEA. IKEA says listings are reviewed before publication and describes buyer protection for purchases misrepresented by sellers. Its separate Buyback route takes eligible IKEA furniture in exchange for in-store credit. Neither route is a general marketplace for furniture from other brands.

Where to look, depending on what you need
Bulky furniture and local collection
Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace are practical starting points when the item is nearby and you can arrange collection. Gumtree describes local classifieds as useful for bulky household goods; Facebook Marketplace supports neighbourhood discovery. These are sensible fits, not guarantees of stock or a particular transaction experience. Check the listing and the service’s current terms before committing. Gumtree’s guidance discusses buying and selling locally.
Detailed listings and seller history
eBay may suit shoppers who want more structured listing information or seller feedback. Confirm that the specific listing offers local collection or delivery that works for you, and include transport in the cost before buying. A listed price alone does not tell you what a large item will cost to get home.

Charity shops and reuse organisations
Local charity furniture shops and reuse organisations offer alternatives to person-to-person listings, particularly if you want to browse in person or support reuse. North London Waste Authority’s furniture reuse guidance points to the Reuse Network directory for finding furniture reuse organisations. This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that a particular service operates in every postcode. The British Heart Foundation also sells preloved sofas, beds, wardrobes and other furniture through its eBay shop; check nearby stock and the available collection or delivery arrangements.
Free furniture
Freegle and Freecycle can help when the goal is to pass on usable furniture or find an item at no cost. North London Waste Authority also lists Olio, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree among possible routes for free items. Availability, timing and collection depend on what people in your area are offering.

Compare the full deal, not just the asking price
There is no single best option for every UK postcode. Compare nearby listings and distance, the detail and photos provided, how the transaction works, collection or delivery options, and how quickly you need the furniture. Platform fees, payment protections and transaction rules can vary by service and method, so check current terms rather than relying on old fee comparisons.

- Nearby stock: How far away is the item, and can you collect it at a workable time?
- Condition and fit: Are dimensions, damage and what is included clearly described?
- Moving arrangements: Is collection expected, or does the seller offer delivery? Can the item fit through your doors and into your vehicle?
- Total cost: Add any fuel, parking, van hire, courier, lifting help, repairs and time spent dismantling or reassembling.
- Transaction terms: Check applicable platform fees, payment arrangements and protections for that specific sale.
A cheaper listing farther away can work out more expensive once transport is included. If you arrange your own move, protective blankets may help shield furniture in transit; include their cost only if you need them.

Before you buy or sell
- Check size and access. Ask for full dimensions. Measure doorways, stairs, lifts and vehicle space before agreeing to collect. Request photos showing the frame, upholstery, corners and any damage.
- Confirm the practical details. Establish what is included, whether the item is assembled or dismantled, the collection address and timing, and how payment will work.
- Be cautious about payment. Avoid pressure to pay a deposit before seeing an item. If you are considering a payment method with protection, verify what the platform’s current rules actually cover.
- Calculate the real purchase cost. Include transport, parking, van hire or courier, help with lifting, repairs, protective materials, and dismantling or reassembly where relevant.
- For sellers, estimate net proceeds. Account for any required fees, payment charges, postage or packaging, and transport. A local classified listing may be simpler for a sofa or wardrobe where the buyer is expected to collect. Check current category rules and payment terms before listing.
- Keep cross-posted adverts in sync. If you list on more than one service, use consistent details, monitor messages and remove the other adverts as soon as the item sells.
- Consider reuse if selling is not worthwhile. Check local charity and reuse organisations’ acceptance rules. Some charities may collect good-quality reusable items for free, but this depends on location, condition and capacity; it is not a UK-wide promise. North London Waste Authority describes local examples in its reuse guidance.
Check safety before buying used furniture
GOV.UK says commercially sold used goods must be safe, while noting that wear, missing modern safety features or modifications can increase risks. Its guidance recommends checking product recalls and physically inspecting second-hand goods where possible. It specifically warns against buying second-hand baby car seats because damage from an accident may not be visible; that warning concerns car seats, not furniture generally.
