If you mean Lionhead Studios’ original Black & White from 2001, there is no verified official Steam or GOG purchase listing in the latest store check described here. The practical route is to obtain a legitimate original PC CD-ROM (or an image made from your own disc), then follow the Black & White Community’s Windows 10/11 patch sequence. A same-name Steam result is a different 2023 game, not the classic.
Modern play is possible, but it is a preservation project rather than a one-click re-release: you need the original game data, administrator access, and several compatibility steps. Linux and macOS users can investigate the open-source openblack engine under Wine, while the original Mac port is not suitable for current hardware.

The title covered here is Lionhead Studios’ original Black & White, released for PC in 2001. Search results can be misleading because other games use the same name. A Steam result checked in the availability report is attributed to ZerocreationGame and CubeGame and carries a March 2023 release date; it is not Lionhead’s god-game classic.

Is the original available on Steam or GOG?
The store check reported on October 4, 2026 found no verified official Steam listing and no GOG purchase page for Lionhead’s game. GOG’s official Dreamlist entry is a request and voting page for bringing a title to the service. It is not a sale, preorder, download or confirmation that a release is planned.
Because storefront catalogues change, check the official Steam and GOG storefronts again when you are ready to buy. Do not treat a search result with a matching name as proof of availability, and do not send money for a “GOG key” unless the key is shown as an official listing for the 2001 game.
The realistic purchase path: an original PC CD-ROM
The documented installation methods begin with original media. The Black & White Community guide calls for a clean copy of the original disc, used in an optical drive or mounted as an ISO. The openblack project likewise requires the original game’s copyrighted assets and says it does not distribute them.

That makes a used “Black & White (2001) PC CD-ROM” a sensible search phrase, including on large resale marketplaces. No current stock, asking price, disc condition or seller reliability has been established, so every listing needs to be assessed at the point of purchase.
What to verify in a listing
- Identity: the listing names Lionhead’s 2001 PC game, not a different title with the same name.
- Edition: it is the Windows PC release rather than the original Mac version or a soundtrack-only, promotional or incomplete item.
- Media: the seller clearly identifies the game disc and shows readable photos of the disc and label.
- Completeness: manuals, serial information and multiple discs, if the particular edition used them, are described rather than assumed.
- Hardware plan: you already have an optical drive, or you have a lawful way to create and mount an ISO from your own disc.
- Return terms: the seller explains what happens if the disc is damaged or cannot be read.
A second-hand disc is not a modern-compatible edition by itself. The disc supplies the original files; Windows configuration and community patches are still required.
Windows 10 and 11: the community installation sequence
The Black & White Community labels its procedure for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is community guidance, not an official publisher compatibility guarantee and not a test of every current PC. Follow the order exactly before changing settings or adding extra fixes.

- Prepare a clean original disc. Insert it into an optical drive, or mount an ISO made from your legitimate media. Avoid starting with a partially patched or previously modified installation.
- Use administrator rights. Sign in to an account that can install software and approve administrator prompts. The guide recommends installing the game on the
C:drive. - Install the base game from the disc. Let the original installer finish before applying any patch. Record the installation folder so you can find the executable and audio directory later.
- Apply official patch 1.1. Do not skip ahead in the sequence. Restart the installer or Windows only if the patch program requests it.
- Apply official patch 1.2. This follows patch 1.1 in the Community guide.
- Do not install patch 1.3. The guide specifically advises against it.
- Apply unofficial patch 1.42. This is the community-supported step intended to improve operation on current Windows versions.
- Set the executable to run as administrator. Locate
runblack.exe, open its Properties dialog, choose the Compatibility tab, enable “Run this program as an administrator,” and apply the change. - Leave Windows Compatibility mode off. The guide warns that selecting a Windows compatibility mode creates more problems than it solves for this game. Administrator elevation and the ordered patches are the recommended approach.
The sequence is therefore disc installation → official 1.1 → official 1.2 → unofficial 1.42. The guide does not promise that this removes every copy-protection, graphics, audio or hardware issue, so keep the original media and installers available if you need to repair the installation.

The original installer does not copy the soundtrack. If you want in-game music, copy the Audio folder from the game CD into the installed game folder after installation. Preserve the folder name and copy the files rather than moving them off the disc if you may need the original media for repair.
What to expect when troubleshooting
Most failures on a modern machine come from using the wrong title, an incomplete disc image, the wrong patch order or permissions rather than from a missing “driver booster.” The documented guidance does not establish any third-party driver utility as necessary.

The installer will not start or the disc cannot be read
- Confirm the disc is the 2001 PC edition and inspect it for scratches or delamination.
- Try a known-good optical drive if the current drive reports read errors.
- If you made an ISO from your own disc, recreate it from readable media and mount that image instead of downloading an unverified copy.
- Run the installer with administrator approval and install on
C:, as the Community procedure specifies.
The game crashes after patching
- Check that official patches 1.1 and 1.2 were installed in that order.
- Verify that patch 1.3 was not applied.
- Install unofficial patch 1.42 after the official patches.
- Set
runblack.exeto run as administrator. - Remove Windows Compatibility-mode settings if you enabled them; the guide says they can introduce additional problems.
The game runs but has no music
Copy the CD’s Audio folder into the installation folder. The base installer’s failure to copy that folder is expected behavior according to the guide, not proof that the disc is defective.
Linux and modern macOS: the openblack option
openblack is an open-source engine project for Black & White (2001). It is not a free distribution of the game. Its documentation states that the original copyrighted assets are required and will not be supplied by the project.
The project describes extracting those assets from the original installer, usually on CD, and lists official patches 1.10 and 1.2 in its asset-extraction instructions. That version notation differs from the Windows Community guide’s “1.1 then 1.2” wording, so follow the instructions for the specific route you choose rather than mixing patch packages between projects.

openblack also documents running through Wine on Linux and macOS. You still need to own and access the original game files; installing the engine alone does not provide a playable copy. Expect project-specific setup and possible differences from the original executable.
What about the original Mac version?
The Community guide says the original Mac port runs only on older PowerPC Macs and is incompatible with modern hardware. That statement concerns the native Mac release. It is separate from using openblack through Wine, which is an alternative engine route that still depends on original assets.
If you have a current Apple silicon or Intel Mac, do not buy a listing solely because it says “Mac.” Confirm whether it is the old PowerPC port or a supported openblack installation path.

Linux and macOS users can consider openblack with Wine, but neither that project nor the old native Mac port provides a shortcut around the requirement for original game assets.
