For winter 2026–2027, both almanacs flag parts of the Northeast for snowy conditions, but they do not publish a shared state-by-state ranking of snowfall totals. Farmers’ Almanac emphasizes heavy, wet snow inland in the Northeast and mountain snow in the southern Rockies. The Old Farmer’s Almanac also points to parts of the Appalachians, Intermountain region, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. These are seasonal forecasts, not confirmed outcomes.
What the Farmers’ Almanac map forecasts
Farmers’ Almanac describes the 2026–2027 season as one of “snow, sleet, and surprises.” Its forecast calls for several rounds of heavy, wet snow in inland parts of the Northeast, particularly in January and February. Coastal areas such as New York City and Boston could see more rain or mixed precipitation instead. Farmers’ Almanac’s 2026–2027 forecast also highlights mountain snowfall in the southern Rockies, cold and snowy periods with sudden squalls in the Great Lakes and Midwest, and drier intervals in the northern Plains.

The same outlook describes wetter-than-normal conditions from California and the Southwest through Texas, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. That does not mean those areas will necessarily get more snow: precipitation can fall as rain when temperatures are too warm.

What The Old Farmer’s Almanac map forecasts
The Old Farmer’s Almanac expects above-normal snowfall in parts of the Northeast and Appalachians, the Intermountain region, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. Its Northeast forecast is not uniform: it identifies below-normal snowfall in the north and above-normal snowfall in the south, and lists several snowier periods across the season. The publication’s forecast was published September 25, 2026. Read The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s 2026–2027 outlook.

Where the forecasts overlap—and where they differ
| Forecast area | Farmers’ Almanac | The Old Farmer’s Almanac |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast | Several rounds of heavy, wet snow inland, especially in January and February; more rain or mixed precipitation possible on the coast. | Above-normal snowfall in the southern part of its Northeast forecast area, but below-normal snowfall in the north. |
| Appalachians | Not singled out as a separate snowfall zone in the retrieved summary. | Parts of the region are forecast to have above-normal snowfall. |
| Southern Rockies | Mountain snowfall is highlighted. | Not singled out in the retrieved summary. |
| Intermountain region, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska | Not singled out in the retrieved summary. | Above-normal snowfall is forecast in these broad regions. |
The clearest overlap is in parts of the Northeast and Appalachian corridor. The broader emphasis differs: Farmers’ Almanac calls attention to inland Northeast snow and the southern Rockies, while The Old Farmer’s Almanac names additional areas in the West and Alaska. These descriptions refer to the publishers’ forecast zones, not a common set of state boundaries.
Why the maps do not identify the snowiest states
The title of a map or article may make it sound as though states can be ranked from snowiest to least snowy. The retrieved official summaries do not provide comparable state-level snowfall totals or a harmonized ranking. They describe broad regions and seasonal snowfall relative to normal. A map may cross state lines, but that does not establish a precise forecast for every place in each state.

- SNOW SHOVEL AND SHOW PUSHER: 18-in combination blade shape is ideal for shoveling and pushing snow
- DURABLE BLADE: Nylon wear strip prolongs blade life and does not cause damage to deck, patio and other ground surfaces
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Ergonomic handle for easier shoveling; 37.4 in. ergonomic handle for more comfortable shoveling
- OVERSIZED HANDLE: Oversized D-Grip handle for comfortable grip with gloved hands
For that reason, it would be misleading to name a definitive set of “snowiest states” or attach snowfall-inch totals to these outlooks. A forecast for above-normal snowfall also describes an expected departure from a local normal, not necessarily which region will accumulate the largest absolute amount of snow.

Snow requires both precipitation and cold air
A wet winter outlook is not automatically a snowy one. Whether precipitation falls as snow or rain depends in part on temperatures, and large-scale patterns can shift regional odds without determining a specific storm. The Old Farmer’s Almanac puts it this way: “El Niño changes the odds. It does not write the forecast.” Its El Niño explainer discusses why seasonal patterns cannot guarantee snow at a particular location.

Seasonal outlooks are not storm forecasts
These almanac maps give a broad seasonal view; they do not tell readers when a particular storm will arrive or how much snow a town will receive. As winter approaches, consult the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s outlooks for official monthly and 90-day temperature and precipitation guidance, then use local National Weather Service forecasts for operational updates closer to an event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the almanacs’ accuracy figures do—and do not—show
The Old Farmer’s Almanac reported 83.3% temperature accuracy, 94.4% precipitation accuracy, and 88.9% overall accuracy for winter 2025–2026 in a retrospective dated August 18, 2026. These are the publisher’s own figures, not independently verified ratings. The almanac says its measure concerns the direction of seasonal temperature and precipitation departures from normal; it does not mean every daily weather event was predicted correctly. See the publisher’s explanation of its accuracy measure.

- 22" combo snow shovel and pusher: Scoops snow, ice, and wet leaves from driveways, walkways, porches, and composite decks; polypropylene head won't bend, break, or snap; stress-tested for reliable year-round performance
- Surface-safe ultra-thick coated blade: Glides on the ground without scratching composite decks, steps, or concrete; eliminates the need for a surface-damaging metal wear strip; safe for all outdoor surfaces year-round
- Head 12.75" x 22" x 4.5" - 56" total length: Curved bottom and D-Grip increase scooping leverage; push D-Grip down to roll head back and dispose of snow; long handle reduces back strain and extends reach
- Fiberglass handle with polyester veil: Prevents splintering and increases strength; long handle design reduces bending and back strain during extended snow removal and pusher sessions
- D-Grip for comfort and control: D-shaped polypropylene no-slip grip fits work gloves; assembles in under a minute with Phillips screwdriver and pliers; 100% Made in USA by Bully Tools since 1994
Those retrospective figures do not verify either publication’s 2026–2027 forecast. No independent, directly comparable verification of both forecasts can be made before that winter has occurred, and the retrieved Farmers’ Almanac forecast page does not provide a comparable skill score. The two publishers’ claims should not be treated as equivalent or independently tested.
