Where Stream Train Saves Files on PC and How to Back Up Your Progress

Stream Train saves its Windows progress in %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowHalf Past YellowStream Traindata. The save files use the .pog pattern. Close the game, copy the entire data folder to a dated location, and keep that copy separate before reinstalling Windows, changing PCs, switching branches, or attempting a cloud restore.

Steam Cloud is listed for Stream Train, but cloud synchronization can fail or present a conflict. A manual folder copy gives you a known point-in-time version that you can restore without depending on the cloud copy.

The %USERPROFILE% variable resolves to your own Windows account folder, so you do not need to replace it with a username manually. The directory is normally hidden because AppData is a hidden folder. Opening the complete path directly is more dependable than trying to browse to it one folder at a time.

Open it with Run

  1. Quit Stream Train completely. Do not leave it running in the background while you copy saves.
  2. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  3. Paste %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowHalf Past YellowStream Traindata.
  4. Press Enter. File Explorer should open the save directory.

Look for the game’s .pog files. The configured pattern identifies the save-file type, but the folder may contain more than one file; treat the directory as a set and preserve all of its contents together.

What to do before copying a save

Close Stream Train before making a manual backup. A running game may still be writing a save when you copy it, leaving the backup at an in-between state. Waiting until the game has exited ensures that the files you copy represent a completed point in time.

For the safest snapshot, close Steam as well when you are about to restore files. A restore performed while Steam or the game is active can be followed by another synchronization or write that changes the files you just replaced.

  • Finish any in-game action that you want included in the backup.
  • Exit Stream Train normally and confirm that its window and process have closed.
  • Do not edit, rename, or delete individual .pog files unless you have a specific reason and a separate backup.

Manual backup: the dependable method

A manual copy is the clearest way to keep a known-good version. It gives you a dated snapshot that remains available even if a later cloud synchronization chooses the wrong state.

  1. Close the game. Make sure Stream Train is no longer writing to the save directory.
  2. Copy the entire data folder. Include every .pog file and any other contents that are present. Copying only one file can omit part of the game’s saved state.
  3. Paste the copy somewhere separate. A dated folder on another drive or a USB flash drive makes the snapshot easy to identify. Names such as Stream Train backup 2026-10-18 record when the copy was made.
  4. Verify before touching the original. Open the backup location and confirm that the copied folder is present and contains the expected save files. Leave the original directory unchanged until that check is complete.

A second folder on the same drive protects against an accidental deletion or a bad edit, but it does not protect against failure of that drive. A USB copy can travel to another computer. For an important move or reinstall, keeping more than one independent copy is safer than relying on a single location.

Compare the available backup approaches

Approach Control over the saved state Portability How recovery works Main limitation
Manual copy of the data folder High: you choose the exact point in time High when stored on USB or another drive Replace the current folder with the selected dated copy Requires you to make and verify copies
Steam Cloud Automatic, but the cloud and local versions can diverge Convenient on another PC signed in to the same Steam account Review the synchronization choice and keep the version containing the desired progress Synchronization can fail or show a conflict
Second folder on the same drive High for a point-in-time copy Low; it stays on the original computer Copy the known-good folder back into the save location Does not protect against loss of the drive
USB flash-drive copy High if the copy is made after the game closes High; it can be carried to another Windows PC Copy the saved folder to the destination computer Can be lost or damaged, so keep another copy for important progress

These methods are complementary. Cloud synchronization is convenient, while a manual copy gives you a version whose date and contents you control. Before a major change, make a manual copy even if Steam Cloud is enabled.

Steam Cloud: what it helps with and where it can fail

SteamDB lists Stream Train (App ID 4071650) as a Windows game with Steam Cloud support. That means cloud synchronization is available for the game, but it is not a substitute for an independently verified backup.

Steam Support documents that synchronization can fail or produce a conflict. A conflict normally means Steam has more than one candidate state, such as a local copy and a cloud copy with different progress. When progress appears to be missing, compare the local and cloud versions rather than accepting a choice without checking it.

If Steam reports a conflict

  1. Stop launching the game repeatedly. Each launch can create another write or synchronization event.
  2. Identify which option represents the progress you want. Check the dates or other information shown by Steam and consider what you last played on each computer.
  3. Choose the local or cloud copy that contains the desired progress.
  4. After the game opens with the expected state, close it and make a manual backup of the resulting local folder.

If you already have a dated manual copy, keep it untouched while resolving the conflict. Do not overwrite that known-good copy with a newer folder until you have checked the restored game.

Restore a backed-up Stream Train save

Restoration replaces the current local folder with a copy you selected. Preserve the current folder first so that you can undo the operation if the backup is not the state you expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exit Stream Train and Steam. This prevents either application from writing over the files during restoration.
  2. Rename the current data folder. For example, rename it to data-before-restore. Renaming keeps the current state available instead of deleting it.
  3. Copy the backed-up data folder into the original location. The destination is the Stream Train save directory opened earlier, under your Windows profile. The replacement folder should retain all of the backed-up .pog files.
  4. Start Steam and Stream Train. Check that the expected progress is present before removing or replacing any other copy.

If the restored progress is not what you expected, close the game, keep both folders, and reconsider which dated backup or cloud version contains the correct state. The renamed data-before-restore folder lets you return to the pre-restore files without having to reconstruct them.

Steam’s Backup Feature is not the same as a save-folder copy

Steam’s official Backup Feature documentation explains how to create backup files from a game’s Steam Library properties and move or store those files elsewhere. It also notes that save locations for third-party games are determined by each game’s developer.

For Stream Train, the developer-defined save location is the local data directory described above. Therefore, do not assume that a Steam installation backup by itself is an independently verified copy of your current progress. Use the manual folder procedure for the save data, and use Steam’s Backup Feature separately when you also want a restorable copy of the installed game files.

Troubleshooting common save and backup problems

The folder does not appear when browsing

AppData is hidden in a normal File Explorer view. Use Win+R and paste the complete path instead of relying on visible folders. If you browse manually, enable hidden items in File Explorer, then follow the same account, LocalLow, developer, game, and data sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No .pog files are visible

First confirm that Stream Train is fully closed and that you opened the path under the Windows account that actually runs the game. Open the directory directly with the path above and check that you are in the final data folder, not the parent Stream Train folder. Do not create replacement files merely because the folder looks empty; preserve the folder as found and verify the game account and installation before changing anything.

The restored game still shows old or missing progress

Close the game and Steam again, then check that the backed-up folder was copied into the correct final directory and that its .pog files are present. If Steam Cloud is enabled, a synchronization event may have selected a different version. Compare the local and cloud choices and select the state containing the desired progress. Keep the backup and the renamed pre-restore folder until the result is confirmed.

You are moving to another PC

Copy the dated data folder to a USB drive or another independent location before leaving the old computer. On the destination Windows PC, install Stream Train, exit both Steam and the game, and place the saved folder in the same developer and game path under that PC’s user profile. Start the game only after the copy is complete, then verify progress before discarding the portable backup.

You are reinstalling Windows

Make the manual copy before beginning the reinstall and store it outside the Windows system drive. A same-drive copy may be lost when the drive is reformatted. After Windows and Stream Train are set up again, restore the folder while Steam and the game are closed, then check the result.

A practical backup plan for different situations

Routine protection

After a meaningful milestone, close Stream Train and copy the complete data folder to a dated folder. Retain the most useful snapshots rather than repeatedly overwriting one file. This gives you a clear recovery point if a later save or synchronization is wrong.

Before switching branches or making a risky change

Create a separate manual copy and do not overwrite it during testing. If the new branch produces an unwanted state, restore the preserved folder using the rename-first procedure.

Before changing computers

Use a portable copy, such as a USB flash drive, and keep a second copy if the progress is important. Steam Cloud may make the transition convenient, but the manual copy gives you a known local version if synchronization fails.

After resolving a cloud conflict

Once the desired progress is visible in-game, close the game and make a fresh manual backup. That backup records the state you intentionally selected instead of leaving the conflict decision as your only recovery option.

Final checklist

  • Use the Windows save directory under AppDataLocalLowHalf Past YellowStream Traindata.
  • Look for the game’s .pog save files.
  • Close Stream Train before copying.
  • Copy the entire data folder, not just one file.
  • Store the copy in a dated, separate location and verify it.
  • Keep a manual backup before reinstalling Windows, moving to another PC, switching branches, or restoring cloud data.
  • During restoration, exit Steam and the game, rename the current folder, copy the backup into place, and verify progress before deleting anything.
  • If Steam Cloud presents a conflict, choose the version that contains the progress you want and then create a new manual backup.
